Southampton: The XI that Ralph Hasenhuttl should play against Tottenham

It has been a good few weeks for Southampton and Ralph Hasenhuttl. The Saints have lost just two of their last eight Premier League games, picking up vital wins over Watford, Norwich, Aston Villa and Chelsea while also grabbing a point against Arsenal and Crystal Palace. It represents an impressive turnaround for the south coast side, who were sat on eight points in 18th place after losing 9-0 to Leicester at St Mary’s towards the end of October – a defeat that Hasenhuttl feels was a turning point in Southampton’s season.

There is no rest for the wicked, however, and the Saints must embark on their fourth game in 11 days when Tottenham come to visit on Boxing Day – here’s the XI that we think Hasenhuttl should put out for that match…

As you can see, we think that Hasenhuttl should make two changes from the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace last time out.

Firstly, Sofiane Boufal should make way for Stuart Armstrong on the right of midfield, for the Moroccan was disappointing against the Eagles – much to the annoyance of these fans on Twitter after he had no shots and made no key passes – whereas Armstrong contrastingly drew praise from some supporters for his display against Chelsea recently.

The former Celtic man grabbed a wonderful assist for Nathan Redmond’s goal against the Blues and deserves to come back in due to Boufal’s poor display, while on the other side, we think that Moussa Djenepo also deserves a start after he terrorised Palace from the bench last time out – the Malian came on in the 62nd minute and completed five dribbles, while also having a shot on target and making one key pass.

Elsewhere, Hasenhuttl has stated that Michael Obafemi might not be an option as he recovers from illness, although Shane Long has returned to training and is “maybe” an option according to the former RB Leipzig boss – however, we feel that Che Adams should start alongside Danny Ings once again as he is fully fit.

Whose Line Is It Anyway: Roy Keane, Graeme Souness or Adrian Durham?

That would mean Redmond and Boufal drop out of the XI which started against Palace, and at a time where the games are coming thick and fast, it would make sense for Hasenhuttl to make a few changes.

In other news, this Southampton transfer target would kill two birds with one stone for Hasenhuttl…

Liverpool player ratings vs Tottenham: A Joel Matip disaster as all of Alisson's hard work is undone by cruel last-gasp own goal

The defender turned the ball into his own net in injury time, ultimately meaning the Brazilian goalkeeper's heroics were in vain

The flashpoint of the first half came when Curtis Jones made a challenge on Yves Bissouma, and went over the top of the ball to make contact with the midfielder's ankle. While he was initially shown a yellow card, VAR intervened and the decision was upgraded to a red, leaving Liverpool with 10 men.

The Reds attempted to rally and thought they had the lead when Luis Diaz scored a superb goal, but it was ruled out for offside, and mere minutes later, Son Heung-min opened the scoring for Spurs, as he finished a delightful Richarlison cut-back.

Liverpool equalised on the stroke of half-time, as Cody Gakpo span brilliantly in the area and finished powerfully after Virgil van Dijk knocked down a delicious delivery from Dominik Szoboszlai, although he appeared to hurt himself in the process and was substituted at the interval.

In the second half, amazingly, Liverpool were reduced to nine men, as substitute Diogo Jota was sent off for two yellow cards.

Alisson Becker had to be at his brilliant best throughout the second half to keep Spurs at bay, saving from both Son and James Maddison in brilliant fashion, but he was beaten by a late Joel Matip own goal after a Pedro Porro cross, leaving all of the good work undone.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Alisson Becker (8/10):

Way out of position for Son's goal but he made superb saves from Maddison and Son early in the second half to keep Liverpool in the game. No chance with Matip's own goal.

    Joe Gomez (6/10):

Deputising for the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold. Nowhere to be seen when Richarlison set up Son's goal but did fine otherwise, and kept the Brazilian quiet outside of his assist. Subbed after Liverpool went down to nine.

    Joel Matip (5/10):

Dealt well with Son in the main before the South Korean was subbed. Had to put his body on the line and did so without complaint but then scored a devastating late own goal to give Spurs all three points.

    Virgil van Dijk (7/10):

Played Richarlison onside in the build-up to his goal but assisted Gakpo's effort with a smart header. Marshalled a depleted Reds side superbly in the second half and never looked flustered.

    Andrew Robertson (6/10):

Got forward and forced a save from Vicario early on and seemed to deal with Kulusevski's trickery, limiting the Swede's influence on the game. Did, however, let the cross come in before Matip's own goal.

    Midfield

    Dominik Szoboszlai (6/10):

Such a superb passing range and delivered the ball for Gakpo's goal. Had to do more defending than he would usually expect, but did so well.

    Alexis Mac Allister (4/10):

Struggled after Jones' red card, with Spurs pressing up on him due to his isolation. Shown a yellow card, and just never seemed to get up to the pace of the game. Subbed late on. He's struggling in this Reds side.

    Curtis Jones (2/10):

Sent off after a dreadful challenge on Yves Bissouma, despite his protestations.

    Attack

    Mohamed Salah (7/10):

Played a brilliant pass that Diaz should have scored from on the stroke of half-time. Booked for kicking the ball way in the second half but was comfortably Liverpool's most dangerous player before his substitution.

    Cody Gakpo (7/10):

Forced a good save from Vicario early on and scored the equaliser, spinning and finishing brilliantly in the Spurs box. Appeared to hurt himself in the process, and was subbed off for Diogo Jota at half-time.

    Luis Diaz (6/10):

Scored after the half-hour mark with a superb finish but saw it ruled out for offside. Continually ran at the Spurs defence and had them panicking, but he could not get on the scoresheet himself before his substitution.

    Subs & Manager

    Diogo Jota (2/10):

On for Gakpo at half-time. Booked twice, and was sent off, although his first yellow card came after a foul in which he didn't make contact with Destiny Udogie. Still, a silly sending off that will have infuriated Jurgen Klopp, given the Reds were already down to 10.

    Wataru Endo (6/10):

On for Luis Diaz. A busy presence in midfield.

    Ibrahima Konate (6/10):

On for Joe Gomez and slotted into the defence.

    Trent Alexander-Arnold (5/10)

On for Salah to add another body in the defence. Got done by Manor Solomon a couple of times down the right.

    Ryan Gravenberch (6/10):

On for Mac Allister with 10 minutes to go and kept Liverpool ticking.

    Jurgen Klopp (6/10):

Opted not to change his formation after Jones' sending off but made sweeping changes after Jota was dismissed, setting his Reds side up in a 5-3-0 formation. It so nearly worked, as the Reds were undone by Matip's late own goal.

Striker starred on loan at Reims last seasonLinked with clubs across EuropeGunners demanding big fee from any dealWHAT HAPPENED?

The United States international striker was expected to have been on the move by now having made it clear that he wanted regular first team football again in 2023-24. He got a taste of that when netting 21 goals during a productive loan spell at Ligue 1 side Reims last season.

Interest has been shown in the 22-year-old from across Europe, with Inter and Monaco said to have seen offers knocked back. Chelsea, Fulham and West Ham are still keen, but Arsenal’s asking price is making a deal difficult. It has been suggested that the Gunners are looking for up to £50 million ($64m) for Balogun.

AND WHAT'S MORE

He may end up going for less than that, but reports that Arsenal are determined to bring in a club-record fee from any deal. As things stand, the Gunners’ record sale saw Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain join Liverpool for around £35m ($45m) in 2017.

Arsenal are aware that Balogun’s valuation will drop if he does not move before the next deadline and runs further into the final two years of his contract, while he also needs games and goals – as he got in 2022-23 – in order for interest in his services to remain high.

    NICOLAS ANELKA | From PSG | £500,000 | 1997

Anelka broke into the Arsenal first team as a teenager after an injury to Ian Wright and ended up being a key part of the Gunners' double win in 1997-98.

He won the PFA Young Player of the Year Award in his second season as an Arsenal player but the supporters eventually turned on Anelka after his body language became more negative on the pitch amid transfer speculation.

Anelka joined Real Madrid for £22.3 million in the summer of 1999, after making 90 appearances for Arsenal and scoring 28 goals.

Wenger hinted that Anelka’s decision to leave north London for Madrid was predominantly a financial one with this great quote: "No matter how much money you earn, you can only eat three meals a day and sleep in one bed."

    SOL CAMPBELL | Free transfer | 2001

In one of the most surprising moves English football has ever seen, Sol Campbell’s decision to let his contract at Tottenham expire before joining Arsenal in the summer of 2001 was quite spectacular.

"[Arsenal vice-chairman] David Dein made me feel protected. He was going to help and promised to be there for me. 'Come to us, he said, and you will be part of our family. We will protect you.'"

Campbell wanted to play Champions League football and took the brave decision to join Wenger’s side – one which proved to be the right one. An unbeaten season was the highlight of Campbell’s Arsenal career in 2003-04 but his goal in the 2006 Champions League final won’t be forgotten either.

He even returned to the club for a second stint in 2010 due to injuries to Thomas Vermaelen and William Gallas.

    CESC FABREGAS | From Barcelona | €1m | 2003

Fabregas became Arsenal’s youngest-ever first team player when he made his debut in a League Cup tie at home to Rotherham in October 2003.

The Spaniard went on to become one of the best central midfielders in European football, winning a catalogue of trophies at international level with Spain – including two European Championships and a World Cup.

"Cesc Fabregas typifies what Arsenal is today,” said Wenger. “It's a mixture of boys who grew up here, and boys who join at the age of 16 from abroad and we develop them as players"

He was named as successor to William Gallas as Arsenal captain in the 2008-09 season where he led a team built up of mostly young players – Samir Nasri, Theo Walcott and Alex Song to name a few – but there was always the undercurrent of interest from his former club Barcelona which ended up unsettling him.

After eight years at Arsenal, Fabregas took a salary cut to join his boyhood club Barcelona in 2011 with the transfer fee totalling almost £35m

    THIERRY HENRY | From Juventus | £10.5m | 1999

Arguably the best player to have worn the Arsenal shirt, Thierry Henry’s glut of 228 goals turned him into a legend at the club where his greatest moments are still talked about today.

The Frenchman arrived at the club in 1999 as a skinny winger who couldn’t get a shot on target and left as an accomplished striker who scored every type of goal you could imagine.

"Thierry Henry could take the ball in the middle of the park and score a goal that no one else in the world could score,” said Wenger.

Henry’s eight years at Arsenal coincided with the famous unbeaten season and he left for Barcelona in 2007 with three league titles, three FA Cups, four Golden Boots and five Player of the Year awards to his name.

Emotional Nash hundred as Sussex remember Hobden

There was emotion before play at Hove in a memorial for Matthew Hobden and Chris Nash followed that with a fitting innings

Half an hour before play, at the end of a poignant memorial service for Sussex fast bowler Matthew Hobden, Chris Nash wiped away a tear from his eye and walked over to embrace Hobden’s mother. Half an hour after lunch, wearing Hobden’s No. 19 shirt, Nash ran through to complete as life-affirming a century as you are likely to see in this year’s County Championship. It was John Arlott who said: “Sometimes I think we are in danger of taking sport too seriously and life not seriously enough.” At Hove, however, there was plenty of room for perspective. Nash’s hundred was warmly received by the first home crowd of the season, though they were also applauding the name on his back, a player taken away from this close-knit club at the age of 22. When Nash’s innings was eventually stopped, with an apt 19 added to the century, they rose in unison once more.Hobden’s memory will live long at Sussex. The entire XI were wearing his shirt number, though most were concealed by sweaters, while Tymal Mills has had MH and 19 embossed upon his bootstraps. Hobden’s locker remains in the dressing room, decorated with messages from team-mates. After Sussex’s rain-affected opening fixture away to Northamptonshire, this was a chance for their fans to commune together and the club to forget some of the sadness.”We had the memorial ceremony to remember Hobsy and for a lot of people it was still very raw,” Nash said. “To see his family there, see how they dealt with it and to speak to them afterwards was quite emotional for a lot of the lads.”It was a very, very tough day to start with. Throughout the day it’s been with us. We were wearing his shirt, his family and friends were here… What it does do is put things in perspective, made us realise it was just a game of cricket. We were playing out there for Hobsy today, as we will all season.”The other focus of attention coming into this match had been on Alastair Cook’s reluctance to switch to a batting helmet with a fixed grille – in line with new ECB regulations – but Sussex quickly pushed that matter down the agenda with an opening stand worth 188.Both captains had wanted to bat, which meant Ben Brown, again deputising for the injured Luke Wright, had to resort to the ingenious method of tossing a coin. Brown won the right to choose and duly put Essex into the field, thereby giving Cook another 24 hours to get used to the idea of wearing a new, safety compliant helmet.Cook, it seems, has already given way. The reported that he will end his stubborn resistance to changing helmets after further discussions with the ECB, including his old Test opening partner – now England’s director of cricket – Andrew Strauss. Asked whether he was happy about wearing a helmet with a fixed grille after testing one in the Hove nets on Saturday, he is said to have replied: “No.”Cook the opening batsman does not give up much easily – as various new-ball bowlers around the world have discovered – but his Sussex counterparts, Nash and Ed Joyce, were in similar mood, notwithstanding Jesse Ryder’s drop of Joyce on 3.Sussex were already 37 without loss by that point, thanks to Nash’s crisp start. He missed the trip to Wantage Road with a foot injury but there was nothing protective about the boot he put in against an Essex attack that too often lived down to Division Two standards. Jamie Porter and Matt Dixon began with a maiden apiece but Nash then reeled off four consecutive fours in Dixon’s second over to shake the innings into life.Nash’s first-class returns of 867 and 866 over the last two years, albeit hampered by injury, have been his lowest since 2007 but his 20th first-class hundred was as confidently assertive as it was emotionally resonant.A winter working with Gary Kirsten in South Africa to give Nash a more upright technique looks to have paid off. His half-century came from 52 balls and he barely slowed on the way to three figures from 113, with 21 fours briskly dispatched around the wicket before Essex had the sniff of a chance. A congratulatory text from Kirsten arrived in the afternoon.Joyce was more circumspect, his first boundary coming in the 17th over, but his grizzled 61 came to seem all the more valuable after he and Nash fell within three balls from Ryan ten Doeschate. Essex used seven bowlers and Graham Napier and Tom Westley shared five wickets, as Sussex’s soft middle order ceded some of the advantage accrued, but a mature fifty from Ollie Robinson, promoted to No. 7, helped push his side towards a fourth batting point. It is fair to say it has been a difficult winter at Hove but there is also a sense of optimism around the new set-up. Wright has replaced Joyce as captain and although he is due to have a minor operation on his right wrist on Monday – Sussex hope he will be fit for their third Championship game, against Leicestershire in a fortnight – he stayed at the ground after the service for Hobden, chatting to supporters and watching his openers put on what he will hope is the first of many weighty stands this season.Sussex is a familial sort of club, something the Hobdens have been publically thankful for since Matthew died suddenly while celebrating New Year. A tree was planted in his memory near the entrance at the Sea End as a crowd of friends and well-wishers, including former Sussex coach Mark Robinson, gathered to pay their respects. Professional baritone Nick Gee gave a rendition of “Good Old Sussex by the Sea” and Wright and Nash were among those who joined in with the final chorus, an ethereal moment on a day that was made for cricket but served as a fine tribute to a fallen cricketer.

Yorkshire approve Gillespie BBL link

Yorkshire have pre-empted another raid on their coaching resources by allowing Jason Gillespie to discuss the possibility of involvement with a franchise in the Big Bash League

Alan Gardner05-Feb-2015Yorkshire have pre-empted another raid on their coaching resources by allowing Jason Gillespie to discuss the possibility of involvement with a franchise in the Big Bash League.Gillespie, Yorkshire’s head coach, has emerged as a potential target for several BBL teams. Brisbane Heat and Melbourne Renegades, who finished last and third-last respectively in the 2014-15 competition, have vacancies, while Adelaide Strikers could also be looking for a new coach after Darren Berry took a break for personal reasons. The window for franchises to begin recruiting ahead of the 2015-16 season is now open, with interest in Gillespie already being reported in his homeland. After discussions with Yorkshire chief executive, Mark Arthur, and director of cricket, Martyn Moxon, Gillespie will be given the opportunity to explore a BBL commission.Yorkshire won the 2014 Championship under Gillespie but failed to get beyond the group stage in the NatWest T20 Blast. Their best T20 season, when they finished as runners-up in 2012, was also overseen by Gillespie and the club have spotted an opportunity to learn lessons from the thriving Big Bash.”I am enjoying working at Yorkshire and we have lots of exciting challenges ahead, which I am very much looking forward to,” Gillespie said. “I would be happy to chat to interested parties in the BBL regarding coaching opportunities if they feel that I can add value to what they are endeavouring to achieve.”The important aspect is that Yorkshire are happy for me to pursue an interest in coaching during the next BBL campaign. Martyn Moxon and Mark Arthur see the benefits of testing myself in a developed competition and how that experience will benefit Yorkshire going forward.”Since arriving at Yorkshire ahead of the 2012 season, Gillespie has developed a reputation as one of the best young coaches in the game. He helped Yorkshire achieve promotion back to Division One of the Championship in his first season and then to a second-placed finish the following year. That was topped by 2014’s title win, Yorkshire’s first piece of silverware since 2002.With the Big Bash running for six weeks over Christmas, a franchise role would be unlikely to inconvenience Yorkshire. Gillespie’s links to South Australia, where he spent his playing career, could make the Strikers an attractive option, should Berry not return.”We will not stand in Jason’s way if he was to be approached by a BBL franchise,” Arthur said. “We see it as a positive, which will enhance our reputation as a leading club across the world. Having our coach immersed in the BBL would gain invaluable insights into a competition that is highly rated. It will also give us a refined approach in our efforts to be successful in the NatWest T20 Blast competition.”Jason is one of the most sought after coaches in the game and his approach and standing in the dressing room is helping us to become a very competitive side across all formats. He is very ambitious, but he is also fully aware that there is still also a lot of work to be done at Yorkshire.”Gillespie, whose 259 Test wickets make him his country’s seventh most-successful bowler, played for Yorkshire in 2006 and 2007 and has continued to develop the county’s already strong links with Australia. Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell will arrive as overseas players for 2015, while Tim Bresnan went the other way to appear in the BBL for Hobart Hurricanes.Yorkshire’s success, which has led to several players being called up by England and the Lions, has also increased interest in their backroom staff. They have seen two 2nd XI coaches poached in little more than a year, after Paul Farbrace left for Sri Lanka and then England, followed by Richard Dawson’s appointment by Gloucestershire last month.

Australians crumble to 153-run loss

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsPhillip Hughes was keen to sweep and pull the spinners•Getty Images

Phillip Hughes scored a half-century but Michael Clarke and Chris Rogers missed out on their last chance for some decent time in the middle ahead of the first Test, as Pakistan A wrapped up a 153-run victory in the tour game in Sharjah. The result was not so much the issue for the Australians as giving players the chance for some match practice; on that front the last day was disappointing as well.Mitchell Marsh, who had made a third-ball duck in the first innings, stuck around for 35 from 54 deliveries as his audition for a Test debut gradually improved, but he was unable to post an attention-grabbing score. Most notably, Clarke and Rogers, who watched on in the ODI series, both fell cheaply for the second time in the game, meaning they will enter the Test without any real local form behind them.Clarke, on the comeback trail from a hamstring problem, promoted himself to No. 3 and punched a beautiful straight drive for four before he was bowled by a Rahat Ali delivery that stayed a touch low. Rogers must also have been particularly frustrated at his luck. Having made a golden duck in the first innings, he got off the king pair first ball with a confident punch through cover, but fell for 3 in an ugly mix-up.Rogers had pushed a single to mid-on and a wayward throw to the bowler’s end opened up the possibility of an overthrow. Rogers committed, Hughes set off and stopped, and Rogers had to turn back from halfway down the pitch. A dive was not enough, and as Rogers trudged off, Hughes sheepishly avoided looking at his dismissed partner.Glenn Maxwell, who did not bat in the first innings, came in at No. 4 and struck three boundaries during a breezy 18 from 20 balls before edging behind when he tried to cut Mohammad Talha. That brought Marsh to the crease to join Hughes and they put on 68 for the fourth wicket, although there were a few nervy moments for Hughes in particular. The unpredictable bounce led to a few balls kicking off the pitch and rapping Hughes on the gloves, and he picked up a lucky six when he top-edged a hook off Talha that landed just over the man at fine leg. Although he has never been the strongest player against spin, Hughes showed signs of improvement and was keen to sweep Raza Hasan and Karamat Ali, also pulling well if they dropped short.Marsh got going with a pair of pulled boundaries in a Talha over and also clubbed Hasan down the ground for six. The pair made it through until lunch but the wickets began to tumble soon after, starting with Marsh, who edged Hasan to slip for 35 and was followed next ball by James Faulkner in almost identical fashion.Given the match did not have first-class status, the Australians changed their batting order and let Alex Doolan and Steven Smith rest after good scores in the first innings, which meant Peter Siddle came out at No. 7. Hughes brought up his fifty with a clip through midwicket off Rahat Ali from his 92nd delivery but on 65, edged behind off the same bowler. After that it was a matter of how long the bowlers would survive, and although Siddle enjoyed some time in the middle with 41, the wickets kept falling. Mitchell Starc was bowled by Imran Khan, Steve O’Keefe was trapped lbw by Talha, Siddle edged behind off Hasan and the result was decided when Talha rattled the stumps of Ben Hilfenhaus to dismiss the Australians for 185.Talha bowled well in the second innings and finished with 3 for 32, while Hasan claimed 3 for 60. Rahat was again impressive with two wickets after bowling well in the first innings, and has done his Test chances no harm. The Australians were due to return to Dubai on Saturday night ahead of a day off on Sunday, before two days of training in the lead-up to the first Test.
