How they were out
Rohit Sharma pummelled Mashrafe Mortaza in a dramatic final over to seal a thrilling win for Deccan Chargers, and boost their chances of reaching the semi-finals•Associated PressA day of great political change in Bengal, with three decades of Communist domination coming to a dramatic end, was almost matched on the field by the team from Kolkata – almost but, yet again, not enough to end the Knight Riders’ losing streak. They have lost several close games this season, but few have been as heart-breaking as this last-ball defeat against the Deccan Chargers, where in an incredible final over Mashrafe Mortaza went into meltdown and Rohit Sharma slammed the 21 runs to script a sensational victory. The success gives Deccan a boost in the intense scrap for the semi-final places, lifting them to third place with 14 points. It was a match filled with talking points but none more so than the no-ball called on the first ball of the final over of the match with Kolkata deemed to have only three fielders in the circle. Brendon McCullum was livid with the umpire but, after lengthy discussions between him and the umpires, the decision stood. It had been hit for four past square leg as well, which meant that Deccan needed only 16 off the over, far more gettable than the initial 21.The expensively acquired Mortaza, getting his first game of the tournament after an increasing clamour for his inclusion, kept the batsmen to two off the next two deliveries before giving the game away. A full toss on middle stump was swiped over midwicket for one of the biggest sixes of the tournament, and then there was a wide. Seven needed off three.Rohit coolly punched one to long-on for two, then crashed the next ball wide of cover for four. One needed off the last ball, and Rohit completed the turnaround in high style pulling it for six to leave Mortaza with the unflattering figures of 4-0-58-0.It undid all the good work of the previous two overs, when Kolkata relentlessly built up an advantage. Mortaza himself gave away only seven runs in the 18th and dismissed danger man Andrew Symonds with an agile run out. Ajit Agarkar, who had gifted away Kolkata’s previous game, was also superb, with a mix of yorkers and low full tosses that Deccan found hard to get underneath.Prime Numbers28Runs conceded by Harmeet Singh and RP Singh in the most expensive over of the tournament58Number of runs conceded by Mashrafe, the most expensive spell in the competition195.45Strike-rate of David Hussey in the tournament71Number of runs scored by Kolkata in the final five overs, the second-highest in the IPL4Number of bowlers having an average of more than 25 in the Kolkata team todayIt hadn’t seemed that it would get this close when Adam Gilchrist provided Deccan his customary blistering start, swinging sixes over midwicket and peppering the off-side boundaries as well. The introduction of spin stemmed the runs, with Murali Kartik troubling the batsmen with his sharp turn and bounce. The part-timers Brad Hodge and David Hussey also put the squeeze on, and after Gilchrist holed out in the 10th over, the asking-rate started steadily spiraling upwards, till Rohit’s heroics settled the matter. It had been a cameo almost as incandescent as Rohit’s that lifted Kolkata towards a defendable score. When Hussey walked out after 14.5 overs, Kolkata had plodded along to 85 for 2. He hurtled to a 17-ball 43 which nearly doubled their total by the end. There was an over almost as dramatic as Mashrafe’s final one when Deccan were bowling as well. The penultimate over was started off by RP Singh, who was forced out of the attack after sending down two above waist-high full tosses and just one legitimate delivery. Eight had already been taken off the over but worse was to follow when Harmeet Singh was brought on to complete it. Hussey swatted a short ball for four, then collected a couple of hard-run twos, before bludgeoning two sixes to round off the over. Twenty-eight came off it, the most expensive one of the tournament.Despite Hussey’s efforts, Kolkata only reached a middling 160 because of the go-slow of the earlier batsmen. Hodge and Sourav Ganguly couldn’t get any sort of momentum going after the McCullum dismissal in the fifth over, only 25 runs coming in the six overs before the strategic break.Ganguly, in particular, had a torrid time. One of his signature strokes during his high noon was the dance down the track to deposit the left-arm spinner over long-on. He attempted that shot off Pragyan Ojha’s first over; not only did he miss the ball, he was struck a painful blow to the groin, and spent a few moments on his knees to get his breath back. There was a controversial moment in the seventh over, when he stuck out his left hand to stop the ball as he was completing a single. Deccan appealed for ‘obstructing the field’ and when it was turned down, they were not too pleased with the decision, Gilchrist letting the umpire S Ravi know that the throw had been heading for the stumps. At the other end, Hodge wasn’t at his best either, only able to knock around the singles, and was especially uncomfortable against the spinners. Ganguly tried to get a move on after the time-out, but his struggle continued before the misery ended when he found the fielder at long-off in the 15th over. Hodge managed to string together some fours before Hussey’s frenetic intervention, but a nerveless Rohit consigned them to another defeat.

Positive Zimbabwe search for upset win

Cricinfo’s preview of the second match of the tri-series between Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in Mirpur

Big PictureThe tri-series warmed up on Saturday with Zimbabwe edging out the hosts Bangladesh by 38 runs, a professional performance which would have given even the big shots a run for their money. One such team which nearly suffered an upset or two against the Zimbabweans in recent times is Sri Lanka. The five-match series in Zimbabwe in November threatened to end as one of the most dubiously one-sided contests after the first two games but the hosts showed the character to bounce back and make the opposition huff and puff for their remaining victories. The most worrisome aspect for Sri Lanka was the batting and the form of their captain Mahela Jayawardene who scored just 19 from four games. They scraped through in their chase of 147 in the fourth ODI and survived another scare in the fifth after defending a paltry 152. The batsmen were tested in conditions which didn’t suit them but they still can’t afford to relax in the friendlier conditions in Mirpur. Elton Chigumbura and Shakib Al Hasan displayed good technique on a turning track and had to graft it out after wickets had fallen. If Zimbabwe upset the Sri Lankans tomorrow, the final league game between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will be a virtual semi-final.Form guide (last five completed ODIs, most recent first)Sri Lanka WWWWW
Zimbabwe WLLLLWatch out forAjantha Mendis: Mendis has shown, in his short career so far, the ability to shoulder the spin attack on his own. He was devastating in Zimbabwe, picking up 15 wickets, including 6 for 29 in the fourth ODI. He showed no signs of discomfort after returning from an ankle injury in the Chittagong Test against Bangladesh, taking seven wickets. It will be interesting to see if Zimbabwe have formulated a plan to tackle him.Elton Chigumbura: The relief in his face said it all when he walked to collect the Man-of-the-Match award in the first match for his 64. Chigumbura said his fifty was a long time coming after a string of low scores – he had failed to cross double digits in his previous six innings. A demotion in the batting order worked to the Zimbabwe’s advantage as Chigumbura arrested a top-order slide, negotiated the spinners and accelerated in the third Powerplay to push the score past a match-winning 200. His timely introduction in to the bowling sent back Shakib and dislodged a threatening stand. With his batting back in shape, he’d want to improve his sub-standard average of 8.69 against the Sri Lankans.TeamsGiven how infrequently they manage to win, Zimbabwe won’t want to change a hair on the side that beat Bangladesh in the series opener.Zimbabwe (probable) 1 Vusi Sibanda, 2 Hamilton Masakadza, 3 Tatenda Taibu (wk), 4 Stuart Matsikenyeri, 5 Sean Williams, 6 Elton Chigumbura, 7 Keith Dabengwa, 8 Prosper Utseya (capt), 9 Ray Price, 10 Tawanda Mupariwa, 11 Ed RainsfordSanath Jayasuriya will likely get a game given how the openers tried out in Zimbabwe failed to ignite. With the in-form Tillakaratne Dilshan not part of the squad, Thilina Kandamby, Chamara Kapugedera, Jehan Mubarak and Angelo Mathews will vie for two spots in the middle order. The bowling pretty much picks itself, though Thilin Thushara will feel hard done if he misses out.Sri Lanka (probable) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Upul Tharanga, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Thilina Kandamby, 6 Chamara Kapugedera, 7 Farveez Maharoof, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Dilhara Fernando, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Ajantha MendisStats and TriviaSri Lanka have bowled out Zimbabwe for less than 100 on three occasions. The most recent was the 67 in Harare in November 2008. Farveez Maharoof has been successful against Zimbabwe, taking 15 wickets in nine games. His career average is 24.33 but against the Zimbabweans it dips to 17.33. The teams are playing each other for the first time in Bangladesh.Quotes”We didn’t bat well, we played a poor game.”
Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful was decidedly tight lipped about his side’s defeat in game one.

Campbell worried for Kane after Spurs development

Speaking to Football Insider, Sky Sports pundit Kevin Campbell has been left concerned for Harry Kane following something he’s seen at Tottenham Hotspur when Son Heung-min is absent.

The Lowdown: Spurs suffer blow…

Following the most torrid international break in recent memory for Spurs, the Lilywhites are sweating over star forward Son’s fitness ahead of their highly-anticipated clash with Chelsea.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news-2/” title=”Spurs latest news…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The South Korea star sustained a calf injury during the break and hasn’t been able to feature for Spurs since, with Campbell now dropping a claim involving Kane.

The Latest: Campbell makes Kane and Son claim…

Speaking to FI, the former Premier League striker has claimed that Son’s injury could have a very negative impact on Kane after seeing just how much Son’s presence benefits the Englishman.

“Kane is in the positions but he is not getting the service.

“When you have a striker as good as Harry Kane up top you have to create.

“Son is a key part of what Harry Kane does because the defence has two things to think about. But when Son is not there the whole defence concentrates on Kane so it makes it harder for him.

“When Son is there the defence is more stretched because he is the runner. It gives Kane more space and time.

“Who is the real threat in behind when Son is not there? There isn’t one. Kane suffers when Son is not there. He is a big absence.”

The Verdict: Spurs sweat…

Taking this and Son’s brilliant 2020/2021 season into account, it’s safe to say Nuno Espirito Santo will be praying for the 29-year-old’s return to action on Sunday.

Indeed, the pair became the most prolific duo in a single Premier League campaign last season.

Amid the Tottenham manager’s selection crisis, a return for the star forward could come as a very timely boost indeed – not only to supply quality, but also to free up Kane.

In other news: Levy could now agree blockbuster new deal for another ‘magnificent’ Spurs player, find out more here.

McDonald troubles Tigers after big night

Andrew McDonald and his fast-bowling colleagues caused major problems for Tasmania on the MCG’s first day of Sheffield Shield action for the season as the Tigers went to stumps at 8 for 189. George Bailey was the only batsman to show serious application on a pitch that shouldn’t have been that difficult and at the close Gerard Denton was on 5 and Ben Hilfenhaus had 1.Play finished half an hour early and 16 overs short as bad light set in but it was a predictable outcome. The first ball was not bowled until 1pm and stumps was scheduled for 7.50pm to give players from both sides time to fly back from Brisbane where several had taken part in Friday night’s All-Stars Twenty20 match. Cricket Australia is keen to pursue day-night Tests and this match confirmed that red balls in the evening are not the way to go.McDonald was one of the men who had made the rush to Melbourne but he showed no weariness after the late night; he finished with 3 for 29 and took two magnificent diving catches. He symbolised the sharpness in the Victoria outfit – no chances were dropped, the players hared through between overs and the fast men bowled with effort and purpose on a reasonably benign surface.Even without key bowlers Peter Siddle, who is with the Test squad, Dirk Nannes, who was a late withdrawal with the flu, and Darren Pattinson, who has a groin injury, Victoria were constantly dangerous. Clint McKay and Damien Wright picked up two wickets each in the early stages as Tasmania wobbled to 5 for 62.Only when Bailey and Luke Butterworth combined for a 62-run stand did Daniel Marsh’s decision to bat begin to look like it might work out. But McDonald ended that partnership when Butterworth (25) clipped Shane Harwood to square leg, where McDonald hurled himself to his left and clasped a strong chance.Bailey, renowned as a dasher, displayed impressive resolve in reaching 73 from 185 balls. He still found opportunities to hit the rope on eight occasions, including a swatted pull off his former Tigers team-mate Wright. But Bailey became another victim of Victoria’s excellent fielding when he top-edged an attempted pull off McDonald and a deceptively agile Harwood ran back at midwicket to take a superbly-judged catch. The best catch was yet to come. Brett Geeves (31) had just lofted McDonald over long-on for six when he checked his next shot and prodded the ball back down the pitch, where McDonald flung himself to his left to grab the sharp chance at full stretch.McDonald clearly adjusted better after the flight south than his All-Stars team-mates Michael Dighton and Marsh. Marsh poked Wright to point for a laborious 7 off 41 balls and Dighton, who had mesmerised the Gabba crowd with 34 from 13 deliveries, managed only 20 before edging behind off McKay.Dighton’s innings was one of many stark contrasts between Friday night’s extravaganza and the dour first-class day that followed. In Brisbane, the All-Stars managed 203 from 20 overs; at the MCG, a Tasmania outfit featuring some of the same batsmen struggled to 189 from 80 overs. A thrill a minute it was not, but it was a good, hard-fought day of first-class cricket.

Palace set to finalise Hughes deal

An update has emerged on Watford midfielder Will Hughes, regarding his transfer to Crystal Palace.

What’s the talk?

According to The Athletic, Crystal Palace are finalising a deal to sign Watford midfielder Will Hughes for a fee that could rise to £10m.

The report claims that the ex-Derby man is now set to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms with the Eagles before being officially unveiled as the club’s latest signing.

Over the moon

Palace boss Patrick Vieira will be over the moon with this news as it means that his fifth senior outfield signing is close to being completed. The club have already brought in Joachim Andersen, Marc Guehi, Michael Olise and Conor Gallagher (loan), with Hughes on the verge of joining them at Selhurst Park ahead of next Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Vieria will be buzzing because it is a much-needed reinforcement to his midfield options heading into the rest of the season. Gallagher, James McArthur and Luka Milivojevic are currently the only out-and-out central midfield options he has available, with Jairo Riedewald and Chiekhou Kouyate being used in a variety of positions across the pitch.

This means that bringing in Hughes could offer the French head coach more variety in his team selections and allow him to rest players when needed. For example, if one of the starting midfielders suffer an injury or suspension, he can bring Hughes in – or whoever the Watford man displaces – and that allows Kouyate and Riedewald to be used elsewhere if there are other gaps to fill.

In the Championship last season, Hughes averaged an impressive SofaScore rating of 6.98 in 30 appearances as the Hornets finished second in the league and secured automatic promotion to the Premier League.

He averaged 3.1 interceptions and tackles combined per game in the second tier, showing that he has a knack for winning the ball back in the middle of the park.

Vieira would love having a player like Hughes in the middle of the park as his industry and defensive work rate could allow the attacking players more freedom to go and do what they do best.

The Englishman would work his socks off in the engine room to then give the ball to the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Eberechi Eze, Michael Olise and Christian Benteke to score the goals to win matches for Palace.

AND in other news, Palace suffer major blow in pursuit of “explosive” 19-y/o prodigy, Vieira will be gutted…

Kaif and Kohli steady India after McGain strikes

On a truncated opening day’s play Mohammad Kaif and Virat Kohli made amends for a surprisingly ordinary top-order batting display to take India A to a position of relative comfort at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The legspinner Bryce McGain exploited the below-par performance to pick up three wickets with his accuracy. It was a strange day for the hosts, who chose to bat after a delayed start due to overnight rain. Perhaps it was the pressure of playing for India A – one step short of the national side – for, barring Kaif and Kohli, the batsmen were nervy and never looked in.Kaif, the fourth-highest scorer in the last first-class season, was serene in his 68 not out. Cutting out his usual fidgety movements at the crease and leaning well into his drives, he timed the ball sweetly. He started off with an off drive and a caressed extra-cover drive off Doug Bollinger before punching Ashley Noffke through point. His defence was tight, his judgment of the off stump precise and he looked comfortable against the spinners as well.He hammered McGain through mid-off and lofted him over long-on for his first six before pulling him to the midwicket boundary. He repeatedly hit through the gaps and rotated the strike well. For the past few months, and especially in the last few weeks at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, he has been working on his left-shoulder position to help his driving through the off side and those efforts showed today.Kohli complemented him well with attractive shots around the ground, especially against the spinners, and was unbeaten on 48. He square-drove and pulled Marcus North, the irregular offspinner, and pulled and cover-drove McGain, who troubled him briefly. Immediately after that cover drive, with a short extra-cover in place, McGain induced Kohli to mistime a couple of drives, once nearly getting a leading edge to carry to that fielder. But without the guile of flight or big turn, at least for today, he couldn’t pull off his plan. Kohli grew in confidence and by the end was looking pretty solid. For someone who likes to play his shots, he also showcased pretty tight defence. The unlikely hero of the day, however, was McGain. His is an interesting story of will and hope. An IT worker in a bank who turned professional cricketer at the age of 35, he grabbed the opportunity today. Eight short steps, a tiny jog before he flicked his legbreaks quickly and accurately in a flatter trajectory. Though his bowling wasn’t very threatening he picked up his three wickets with the change in length. After Parthiv Patel swept him through midwicket, he ripped one fuller to trap him in front and then sensing S Badrinath, who took 33 balls – edging and missing – to move from 1 to 2, might try to break free against him, he fired one full to beat the bottom-handed swipe across the line. McGain saw Robin Uthappa being reprieved off a full delivery before he dropped one slightly short to get him caught by the same fielder, the very next ball. The seamers were largely ineffectual on a flat track, especially the new-ball bowlers – Bollinger and Noffke – who were guilty of bowling slightly short. Bollinger got Ajinkya Rahane’s wicket after the opener had an ugly flash at a short-of-length delivery outside off. Peter Siddle was the pick of the medium-pacers, hitting the good length and generally keeping it around the off stump. With Beau Casson, the chinaman bowler, bowling just one over because of a hamstring problem, the day belonged to the former IT worker.

Pakistan likely to slash ticket prices

The Asia Cup was played in front of near-empty stands and the PCB doesn’t want a repeat of that © AFP

Pakistan are planning to slash the prices of tickets for next month’s Champions Trophy after experiencing near empty stands for the Asia Cup games earlier this summer when the ticket rates were very high.A seat for the Pakistan-India match in a decent enclosure in Karachi’s National Stadium was reportedly priced around Rs 3000. Shafqat Naghmi, Pakistan Cricket Board’s chief operating officer, said on Wednesday that the tickets would cost almost 30-40 % less than those in the Asia Cup.”We want to ensure that all Champions Trophy matches attract sizeable crowds and will take all possible measures for it,” Naghmi told the . “We will consult the ICC and try lowering the ticket prices.”However, the PCB and the ICC now face a big challenge because the eight-nation tournament will be played during the fasting month of Ramadan. Normally, Pakistan doesn’t host international series during this period and it remains to be seen whether spectators will fill up the stadiums during the tournament. To facilitate the spectators, it has been decided to time the matches in such a way that the innings break comes at time when one breaks his fast (at dusk). Efforts are also being made to provide for free meals for spectators but implementing such an idea would cost the PCB around Rs 15 million.

Lee Ryder offers Woodman update

AFC Bournemouth remain keen on Newcastle United’s Freddie Woodman, who may now be available for loan again, Chronicle Live journalist Lee Ryder reports.

The lowdown

Woodman got as far as having a medical with the Cherries and was preparing to join up with his new team-mates for a pre-season training camp in Marbella (via The Northern Echo).

But Newcastle opted to pull the plug on the deal at the eleventh hour following an injury to first-choice ‘keeper Martin Dubravka.

Woodman also spent last season loan in the second tier, helping Swansea City reach the playoff final.

In 45 league appearances, he conceded only 38 goals and kept 20 clean sheets – the most in the division.

The 24-year-old has two years left on his Newcastle contract and is valued at £9million by Transfermarkt.

The latest

Karl Darlow, another of Dubravka’s deputies, is due back in training this week after recovering from Covid-19.

He could play some part in the Toon’s behind-closed-doors friendly against Burnley on Tuesday, which would point towards him being available for Newcastle’s first league game at home to West Ham on 15 August.

The ‘debate’ over whether Woodman should be loaned out is now expected to resurface.

Bournemouth are still described as ‘keen’, while the player himself is hoping to go out on loan in search of regular first-team football.

The verdict

Newcastle should now grant Woodman the move he desires, whether that’s Bournemouth or elsewhere. You’d imagine there’ll be no shortage of suitors after his impressive displays in the Championship.

Mark Gillespie is a capable no. 2 in the mean-time, and Newcastle could even try to insert a straightforward recall option in the Woodman loan agreement as an additional safety net.

In the long-term, a larger question about his his role at St James’ Park looms. Dubravka and Darlow are 32 and 30 respectively and should be able to continue performing for a number of years. Come next summer, the Magpies may choose to cash in.
