Nottingham Forest fans react to Luke Steele display vs Sheffield Wednesday

[ad_pod ]

Nottingham Forest manager Martin O’Neill handed goalkeeper Luke Steele his first Championship start since February 2018 against Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday night, and Reds fans delivered their verdict on the 6 ft 2 player both during the game and post-match.

The 34-year-old was given an opportunity by the former Republic of Ireland boss with Costel Pantilimon dropping to the substitutes’ bench, and it looked as though it was going to prove to be an inspired decision following an impressive first half where he pulled off one fantastic save.

However, just two minutes after half-time he was caught horribly out of position by Marco Matias who found the net from 35 yards, with the visitors to Hillsborough going on to be beaten 3-0 in Yorkshire.

With their faint play-off hopes fading, Forest supporters took to Twitter to have their say on their stopper’s display, and the majority weren’t pleased with him.

Unsurprisingly Matias’ strike was a popular talking point, and while one simply said “wow” – presumably having seen the goal – another said “Luke Steele didn’t see that coming”.

Here is just a selection of the reaction…

Spurs fans delighted as Man Utd appoint Solskjaer

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans have breathed a sigh of relief after Manchester United confirmed the permanent appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager.

The Norwegian has signed a three-year contract at Old Trafford, per the club’s official website.

The move comes after months of frenzied speculation over the identity of United’s next boss.

Indeed, The Telegraph reported in December that Pochettino was the club’s only target to succeed Jose Mourinho.

Solskjaer has enjoyed a remarkably successful caretaker spell at United, taking the club into the Champions League quarter-finals, where they will face Barcelona, while also maintaining their push for a top-four place. They are currently fifth in the Premier League, two points behind Arsenal and three behind Spurs.

He has now been rewarded and Spurs fans are delighted, with it seemingly confirmed that Pochettino will remain in his post for the first full season at the club’s new stadium.

Rangers right to do all they can to avoid internal bias growing

Rangers rebel Alfredo Morelos continued his reign of disciplinary terror with yet another booking on Tuesday night against Aberdeen.

There are three guarantees in life: death, taxes and a Morelos booking.

Being a man of consistency and immense talent, both at scoring goals and picking up suspensions, Morelos was true to form when securing a yellow card against bitter personal rivals Aberdeen – adding to mightily impressive collection of 15 yellow cards and four red cards.

It is genuinely mind boggling how Morelos has only missed five games this season – but he has managed it, and Rangers have ultimately benefitted.

Morelos’ 16 goals make him the Scottish Premierships leading goal scorer ahead of Aberdeen’s Sam Cosgrove (14) and Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard (12), and interestingly full-back teammate James Tavernier (11).

The Colombian’s heroics in front of goal is exactly why the club and Gerrard are so keen on keeping him on the pitch – in the hope of consolidating their second-place position, or even the top spot.

And Rangers most recent attempt to haul him out of trouble is testament to that.

Morelos’ suspension on Tuesday was awarded for an apparent dive when the player adjudged to have hit the ground too easily upon contact from Dons defender Andrew Considine – meaning he will be missing for the first round of the Scottish Cup next term.

Whether the decision was correct or not, Rangers were absolutely right to challenge it (as per Daily Record).

Of course, ensuring they have their star player is on the pitch is paramount. After all, Morelos has spearheaded the club back into sight of their former glory – to lose him at this stage would be a disaster.

But we believe there is a more fundamental reason behind their appeal.

Even if it was a dive – and there is every chance it will be reviewed in favour of the referee – Rangers will want to prevent the development of a dangerous precedent whereby Morelos is handed cards irrespective of the legitimacy of his actions, simply because of his reputation.

An inherent bias against Rangers would not be good news for their future.

Rangers fans, what do you think – is Gerrard right to appeal? Let us know in the comments below…

Sheffield Wednesday: Rolando Aarons must step up in Owls’ play-off push

It has been a great start to the Steve Bruce era at Hillsborough, hasn’t it Owls fans?

The 58-year-old replaced Jos Luhakey as manager in January and since taking charge of his first fixture last month, Sheffield Wednesday have yet to lose.

Currently on an unbeaten run of ten games, the Owls are just two points behind the play-off positions yet in order for them to complete a remarkable turn around this season, one player in particular will have to finally step up to the plate.

A graduate of Newcastle United’s academy, Rolando Aarons was seemingly destined for great things after demonstrating an incredible level of talent as a teenager. The Jamaican-born winger debuted for the Magpies in an away defeat at Manchester City in 2014 and later scored his first ever goal for the club in what was a sensational individual performance against Crystal Palace.

However, his early promise was hampered significantly by a plethora of injury problems which limited him to just 21 appearances over three seasons.

Two largely unsuccessful loan spells at Hellas Verona and Slovan Liberec in the past year has done nothing to help Aarons’ hopes of returning to the top level of football yet January’s move to Wednesday could provide the necessary conditions for him to blossom.

Playing under an experienced English manager in Bruce, the winger will undoubtedly learn and develop as a player if he continues to illustrate the correct attitude needed to be a success in the Championship. Furthermore, a consistent level of playing time will give Aarons the confidence that could be beneficial for both himself and the Owls.

An extremely gifted player on his day, the 23-year-old ace could embark on a purple patch of form which would help his side reach the play-offs at the end of the season.

However, if he doesn’t step up and deliver, Aarons will know that his time in the higher tiers of English football could be over, leading to his career to fade away after initially being considered as one of the country’s brightest young prospects.

What do you think Wednesday fans? Could Aarons lead you to an unlikely play-off berth? Or are there other players who also need to step-up in the final eight fixtures? Let us know below.

Sanchez and Fred have struggled so far at Man United this season

Manchester United have been on top form of late under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but even still, a couple of players have struggled to catch the eye consistently over the course of the season.

Under Solskjaer’s guidance, key figures such as Paul Pogba, Victor Lindelof and Marcus Rashford have been revitalised and have played a pivotal role in helping United to fourth position in the Premier League, where they currently stand.

However, not all players have impressed as much as the aforementioned trio, some names have been unable to truly establish themselves in the side under either Jose Mourinho or Solskajer.

With that being said, it is these two players that have particularly struggled this season…

Alexis Sanchez

Having moved to Manchester over a year ago now, Sanchez is yet to find consistency in his performances for the Red Devils.

This season, he was not particularly impressive under Mourinho and now following a spell on the sidelines through injury and under new management, there have been signs that the performances of his former-self at Arsenal could be replicated, such as his part in the display at the Emirates Stadium in the FA Cup.

But on the whole, he has largely struggled this season to impact the side and force his way into a week-in-week-out spot in the starting 11.

Fred

Fred is another player who has struggled for consistency in a United shirt this season.

There were understandably high expectations to live up to with such a transfer fee when he arrived in the summer, however, he is clearly yet to fully convince Solskjaer on his ability to perform consistently, not just the fans.

The Brazillian has featured just five times under Solskjaer, with the most recent two including amounting to mixed fortunes as he was rather poor against Crystal Palace, before coming on against Southampton, looking lively and assisting the winner.

As of yet, he is yet to kickstart regular, impressive form for United or dominate the midfield week-in-week-out as he did so for Shakhtar Donetsk, his involvement in Romelu Lukaku’s goal against the Saints could be the boost he needs to push on now and display what everyone knows he is capable of.

West Brom target David Sesay; Mason Holgate’s replacement?

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun, West Brom have joined the race for Crawley Town youngster David Sesay as Darren Moore hunts for a long-term option at right-back. The starlet will surely make a fantastic replacement for loanee Mason Holgate should he not sign on a permanent basis.

What’s the word?

Well, The Sun reports that Moore and the Baggies have been tracking the defender since his senior debut for Watford last year – Sesay came through the Hornets academy before securing a move to West Sussex outfit Crawley Town, where he has thoroughly impressed.

The 20-year-old has made 13 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions and chalked up one assist in his maiden season at Broadfield Stadium.

Crawley are currently 18th in League Two and they may struggle to keep hold of the young prospect, particularly if they are to be relegated from the EFL this season. If the minnows cannot evade the drop, West Brom will be waiting to snap Sesay up.

Ideal replacement for Holgate

Mason Holgate has been a fixture in the Baggies starting XI since signing on loan from Everton in January, playing the full 90 minutes in every Championship clash he has featured in.

While the young Englishman has been utilised solely as a right-back since his arrival at The Hawthorns, he is also equally capable playing at the heart of defence – he shares this with Sesay, who is comfortable being deployed all across the back-line.

Moore’s desire to find a winning formula for his side has seen him try a number of different formations, including a 3-1-4-2 – although that yielded little success. Whether or not the Baggies boss decides to dip his toes back into such an approach or stick with his current 4-3-3, Sesay’s versatility would be a huge asset if he can be developed into a Championship standard player.

Are fans being priced out of the Championship as well as the Premier League? The angry Bolton fan in the video below certainly believes so…

As it stands, Holgate is set return to Goodison Park at the end of the season and so West Brom’s interest in Sesay – a very similar player – suggests that the Midlands club feel there is little chance of Holgate remaining at The Hawthorns beyond the 2018/19 campaign.

Celtic: Fans react to social media post of Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo

Many Celtic fans are showing their love for defender Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo after the club posted a video of the player on Twitter.

Footballers have a lot of spare time at the moment as the game across the globe has been postponed due to recent events, and the 24 year-old Belgian, per Transfermarkt, is passing the time by creating TikTok’s with his family.

The full-back clearly isn’t shy to show his personality to the Hoops’ fanbase during his debut season in Scotland after his £3.01 million move from Rapid Vienna last summer and it has gone down well with fans, as one said “MY left back.”

The season started well for Bolingoli, as he has managed eleven clean sheets and four assists in 28 appearances in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, but a knee injury he suffered in late 2019 has seen him not be a consistent name in the starting eleven since he has been able to return.

Despite this it seems the fans still love him, with one suggesting that former left-back Kieran Tierney would never have done a video like this.

Southampton fans hail James Ward-Prowse following 2-0 win over Crystal Palace

Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to hail James Ward-Prowse, following the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Tuesday evening.

Following an injury to Cedric in the 21st minute, the Saints academy graduate was forced to spend the rest of the game at right-back, as Yan Valery was unavailable with a viral infection – also meaning that he was up against Wilfried Zaha, with the pair involved in an altercation at half-time in which the Ivorian poked Ward-Prowse in the face.

Nevertheless, the former Manchester United winger remained on the pitch, although he may well have been better off going home such was the Southampton No.16’s dominance in terms of shackling him.

The 25-year-old won four aerial duels against Roy Hodgson’s men, and also made five successful tackles – more than anyone else on the pitch managed to record.

Additionally, Ward-Prowse made three interceptions and three clearances, while also playing one key pass and winning two freekicks off the Eagles.

It truly was an impressive showing from a man who was filling in at an unnatural position of right-back.

Let’s see how the Southampton fans on Twitter reacted…

To kick off the reaction, these three Southampton fans piled the praise on Ward-Prowse while all of the trio also credited Ralph Hasenhuttl for his role in transforming the midfielder.

Sam said that the Saints man has “come along so well” under the former RB Leipzig boss, before adding that the Englishman has been underrated “for too long”.

Elsewhere, Jonathan simply wanted to express his appreciation for Ward-Prowse, before mentioning that his “rise under Ralph has been nothing short of phenomenal”.

Also, David said that the Austrian “has turned JWP into a proper, proper player”.

Elsewhere, Stevie said that Ward-Prowse “has definitely come of age” whereas Tom added that “Palace couldn’t handle him” – given how wound up Zaha appeared to be at half-time, that statement seems true.

Lastly, Andrew simply called the midfielder a “hero” before saying that he loves him – aw.

Opinion: Celtic’s failure to secure option-to-buy clause in Timothy Weah deal will come back to haunt them

Celtic’s need to sign a new centre-forward in January has intensified in recent weeks amid Leigh Griffiths’ lengthy absence from football.

The summer deadline day sale of Moussa Dembele ensured that Celtic would be on the lookout for a new striker until the winter window, and with just days left before it reopens for business it appears Brendan Rodgers has identified a key target.

According to a recent report from The Scottish Sun, Paris Saint-Germain’s Timothy Weah is all set to snub French side Amiens and follow in Odsonne Edouard’s footsteps by moving to Celtic Park on loan, with a medical due to take place in Glasgow next week ahead of the deal.

However, while Edouard moved on loan before completing a permanent switch, the report suggests that there will be no option-to-buy clause included as part of the temporary loan deal.

At this moment in time Weah represents something of an unknown entity due to his lack of involvement at PSG this season.

Whether the 8-cap USA international has the ability to immediately make an impact in the SPFL is unclear, but that should not prevent Celtic from including an option-to-buy clause.

After all, at this moment in time his stock is far from astronomical and a successful stint at Celtic Park is bound to drive his price-tag up following an increase in demand for his services.

The success Edouard has enjoyed since joining the Hoops suggests that Celtic are wise to take a punt on Weah next month, but the deal may come back to haunt them if they fail to negotiate a clause to turn the deal permanent.

It seems that PSG have higher hopes for Weah than they did for Edouard, and that could leave the Bhoys faithful pondering over what might have been further down the line.
