Celtic: Source shares Odsonne Edouard fee

Celtic could actually pocket up to £20m in the deal that took Odsonne Edouard to Crystal Palace on deadline day, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Sky Sports claim

Edouard finally sealed a Parkhead exit he has been working on since April with hours remaining of the window, signing a four-year deal at Selhurst Park.

The Hoops brought in a striker of their own in Georgios Giakoumakis from VVV-Venlo.

Sky Sports claimed that a transfer for Edouard cost Patrick Vieira’s side an initial £14m that could rise to £18.5m. However, it seems as if it could be more than that, which is good news for Dominic McKay and Ange Postecoglou.

The Latest: Source shares Wednesday update

Football Insider shared a story on Wednesday after being informed by a Celtic source.

They suggested that a move for Edouard has actually cost Palace £15m which could end up totalling £20m with various add-ons.

The report adds that Celtic will now have to hand Paris Saint-Germain 30% of profits made on Edouard.

The Verdict: A good window

Celtic have brought in 12 summer signings and have come out with a profit, as per Transfermarkt.

The site suggests that the Hoops have forked out just over £20m on incomings and have received £31.59m in departures over recent months.

It seems as if that figure could well rise in the future with add-ons for Edouard, so overall, it appears to have been a productive window for McKay and co, rebuilding a squad in desperate need of a freshen-up with money to spare.

In other news: Deadline day activity away from Celtic means two of McKay’s signings cost effectively nothing.

Dean ref for Wolves v Man Utd

Many Wolves fans have been left fuming as some news emerged ahead of their game at home against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

As per the official website of the Premier League, it has now been confirmed that Mike Dean will be the on-field referee for the game, while Stuart Attwell will be on VAR duty.

Incidentally, Dean has given more penalty kicks to Man Utd (20) then any other club over the course of his career so far, and the Red Devils are the second-most profitable team in terms of wins (43) behind Chelsea when he is officiating (Transfermarkt).

He has often been accused by the media of making games all about him, and has been involved in controversial Wolves matches because of this (Birmingham Mail).

Wolves fans on Dean appointment

These members of the Molineux faithful fumed as the news was confirmed on Twitter, with one WWFC supporter even going as far as to claim that it is ‘dreadful’:

“We are doomed to 0 pts from first 3 games. Might as well just give Man Utd the points and take the day off.”

Everton fans react to Dumfries snub

Everton have withdrawn from the race to sign PSV Eindhoven’s Denzel Dumfries, according to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness).

The player apparently asked his agent Mino Raiola to push for a move to reigning champions Inter Milan instead. Their interest ultimately ‘stimulated’ him more.

Why might Everton have been keen on Dumfries?

Dumfries made 30 Eredivisie appearances last season, scoring twice and providing six assists (via WhoScored).

The 25-year-old was called up to The Netherlands squad for the European Championships and shone in the group stages. He netted a late winner in the Dutch’s opener against Ukraine and was also on target against Austria.

Dumfries has two years left on his PSV contract and is valued at £14.4million by Transfermarkt.

According to The Athletic, signing a right-back is a priority for Everton after two years of scouting potential successors to the veteran Seamus Coleman.

Fan feed Toffee TV relayed Gazzetta’s claims, and here’s how fans reacted.

Southampton tipped to sign Issa Diop

Southampton have recently been tipped to sign West Ham centre-back Issa Diop, and the Frenchman could be the ideal replacement for Jannik Vestergaard in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side should the Denmark international leave St Mary’s this summer.

What’s the word?

Southampton were linked with a move for the former Toulouse defender by Foot Mercato earlier this month, and former Saints player Carlton Palmer has now suggested that the 24-year-old could be an excellent addition to Hasenhuttl’s squad.

He told This Is Futbol: “I think that would be a good move. Again, Diop wants to play, he would play regular football at Southampton, and it would be a good move for both parties.”

Could Diop replace Vestergaard at Southampton?

Vestergaard has attracted a lot of interest this summer after an impressive campaign with Southampton, before playing a key role for Kasper Hjulmand’s Denmark side as they reached the semi-finals of the European Championship.

Roma currently look to be the main contenders to sign him, with Jose Mourinho clearly keen on the former Borussia Monchengladbach man as Spurs were also heavily linked before the 58-year-old was sacked at the north London club.

After a tricky start at Southampton, the 28-year-old is now one of the first names on the teamsheet for Hasenhuttl as his passing has drastically improved from previous seasons, whilst his 1.99m (6 foot 6) frame obviously makes him a threat in both boxes, evidenced by his three Premier League goals last season.

However, his current contract is set to expire at the end of next season, and with no extension on the horizon, it would perhaps not be a surprise to see him depart this summer, which suggests that a replacement needs to be brought in.

Diop may have lost his regular starting place in West Ham’s side last season, making just 18 appearances in the Premier League, but he is still only 24 and has emphasised in the past that he can be a top defender when he is on form.

After an impressive performance for the Hammers against Manchester United in 2018, Mourinho labelled the £16.2m-rated Diop a “monster”, which suggests that the Frenchman could replace the aerial therat offered by Vestergaard in this Southampton side.

Indeed, like the Danish defender, the Irons centre-back also has a happy knack for popping up with headed goals.

Therefore, if a deal can be done with David Moyes’ side this summer and Vestergaard is sold, then Southampton should definitely be looking to bring in Diop as his replacement.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Joel Ward contract

Joel Ward has re-joined Crystal Palace, signing a two-year deal at Selhurst Park.

The Eagles shared the news on Thursday afternoon, and, as to be expected, a number of Palace fans were quick to share their positive thoughts at the update on social media.

The right-back’s previous contract expired on July 1, so he was technically a free agent for over two weeks.

He was just one of 11 senior Palace players who were without a club at the beginning of the month and becomes the first to re-sign for the Eagles under new manager Patrick Vieira.

Ward, who has been at Palace since 2012, has made 273 appearances for the club.

He’s turned out 225 times in the Premier League, scoring five times and registering 10 assists in Palace colours.

Palace fans react

Palace posted on their official Twitter account regarding Ward’s new deal. These Eagles fans were delighted, with one describing the update as ‘outstanding’.

Surrey are confirmed as county champions

They did not score a run or take a wicket today, but Surrey are the new Frizzell County Championship winners

Ralph Dellor07-Sep-2002They did not score a run or take a wicket today, but Surrey are the new Frizzell County Championship winners. There were two sides who might have caught them mathematically, but Kent drew with Somerset and Warwickshire had to settle for a draw at Old Trafford and so the champions’ pennant will be flying over The Oval next season. At Old Trafford, Dougie Brown and Dominic Ostler both scored sixties, Neil Carter got to seventy, but when Warwickshire were all out for 328 on a rain-affected day, the captains shook hands and the champagne corks began popping way down south.Last season’s champions, Yorkshire, managed to put the points for a draw towards their survival quest this year when, chasing 345 to win, Leicestershire could only manage 231 for five. Leicestershire’s Darrens, Maddy and Stevens, both got to eighty before falling to Steve Kirby. As always appeared likely, the match at Taunton between Somerset and Kent also ended in a draw. Somerset declared with nine wickets down to set Kent 377 to win. Peter Bowler had gone on to 81 in the Somerset innings while Paul Nixon was 51 not out as Kent went through the motions of chasing such a large total and always seemed intent on avoiding defeat. With one day remaining, Sussex and Hampshire are unlikely to get anything other than a draw out of their match. Hampshire are still 355 behind Sussex with four six first innings wickets in hand. Jason Laney was top scorer with 89 and three of the Hampshire wickets have fallen to James Kirtley. In Division Two, Gloucestershire and Derbyshire drew. Derbyshire were, in theory, chasing 583 to win, while there was much more chance of Gloucestershire taking the nine wickets they needed for victory on the final day. They only took four, but Michael Di Venuto was 175 not out at the close. It is hard to see any other result than a draw from Glamorgan against Worcestershire. With an undefeated hundred from Stephen Peters and Vikram Solanki still there on 83, Worcestershire still trail Glamorgan by 159. There was a half-century for Graeme Hick.On the second day of a match badly affected by the weather, Nottinghamshire have reached 306 for three against Durham. Usman Afzaal is 91 not out, while Guy Welton scored 77 and Darren Bicknell 54.

West Ham dealt Worrall blow

The Athletic have dropped a worrying update on West Ham target Joe Worrall…

What’s the talk?

The Athletic’s Paul Taylor has dropped a concerning update for West Ham in their pursuit of Nottingham Forest centre-back Joe Worrall. The Hammers are reportedly keen on signing the English defender this summer, but he does not appear to be in any rush to leave the Championship outfit.

In a Q&A this week, Taylor revealed that Worrall is not demanding to leave Forest and the club will only cash in on him if the right offer comes in for his services. The Athletic reported earlier this summer that it would take a fee of £10m, paid largely upfront, to prize him away.

He said:

“A few weeks ago, the answer to this would have been a definite yes. Now it does not feel 100 per cent certain. You still get the sense that, if the right offer comes along, Forest will give serious thought to selling — but it would have to be the right offer.

They have already turned down offers for Brennan Johnson, although they were at a low level and the suggestion is that Joe Worrall is not kicking down doors demanding to be given the opportunity to move.”

Moyes will be gutted

David Moyes will be gutted by this latest update as it could negatively impact West Ham’s chances of being able to land Worrall this summer. If the Englishman is not willing to push for a transfer away from the City Ground then the Hammers will not be able to negotiate a better deal with Forest as they will be unable to use the threat of them keeping an unhappy player. This news seemingly shows Forest that they can keep Worrall at the club without him kicking up a fuss, which could allow them to be tough in negotiations.

The Hammers have an ageing group of central defenders at the club. Issa Diop is Moyes’ only option in that area of the pitch who is below the age of 29, with Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson in their 30’s and Fabian Balbuena turning 30 next month. Therefore, signing a talented young centre-back, like Worrall, could be a shrewd piece of business by the club.

He only turned 24 back in January and could add some much-needed youth to the ranks. However, despite his young age, Rangers boss Steven Gerrard once hailed Worrall as a “leader” during his time on loan in Scotland and claimed that he will captain any team he plays for in the future.

He said:

“He will be a captain of whatever team he plays for.”

“He is a leader and he stepped up today.”

This goes some way to showing that Worrall has the mentality and quality to come into the London Stadium and be a good addition to Moyes’ squad and that is why the Scot will be disappointed by this update.

Hopefully, the situation changes between now and the end of the window and the club are able to snap him up for a reasonable price.

AND in other news, Moyes must act swiftly to land “explosive” goal machine, West Ham fans would love him…
