Celtic: Rangnick appointment could still happen

The dream appointment is still on the cards for Celtic supporters. The name Ralf Rangnick is one that’s been popular with fans and indeed, he could still make a move to Glasgow.

What’s the word?

Rangnick had been linked with the Germany job but he was also reportedly in discussions over a sporting director role at Schalke.

However, according to the man himself, that is now firmly off the table.

The 62-year-old issued a statement this weekend reading: “Schalke is very close to my heart. The overwhelmingly positive reactions from members of the Königsblauen community have influenced me and confirmed my feelings for this very special club.”

Rangnick added “I would have loved to been involved in helping Schalke on its difficult road back to its former strength. Unfortunately, due to the numerous uncertainties within the club at the moment, I do not see myself being able to take on sporting responsibility at S04 at the moment.”

This is a major twist in Celtic’s hunt for a new manager. Only a few days ago it looked as though the German’s name was one they could cross off the shortlist.

Yet, they can now firmly put him at the top of their list again.

Desmond must be buzzing

This is incredibly exciting news for Celtic fans. They were lusting after Rangnick a few months ago but it looked as though their hopes had been diminished this week.

That being said, the possibility of the German now arriving at Parkhead has been elevated.

Commentator Derek Rae revealed all the way back in November that a deal would only be struck if he was enthused by the project in Glasgow. As can be seen from his statement regarding Schalke, it takes a very particular set of circumstances for him to move.

Celtic have their own issues and uncertainties, but if he joins, it could be revolutionary for the Bhoys. That’s because of his unbelievable achievements at Leipzig.

During his stint with the Bundesliga club, he helped develop players like Timo Werner and Naby Keita, deploying a transfer strategy that was based around signing players exclusively under the age of 23.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-transfer-news-onuachu-edouard-dembele-turnbull” title=”The latest Celtic news and views!”]

Known as the professor of the high press, he was also incredibly meticulous behind the scenes. Rangnick was very demanding, expecting players to arrive at training 90 minutes early in order to undergo saliva and blood tests.

As a consequence, he was able to work out how hard his squad would be able to train. They would also test gluten and lactose and tailor diets to each individual’s requirements as a result. His methods were so meticulous that he also brought in a sleep coach.

It’s pretty evident why this would be a dream hire.

THFC: Mourinho provides update on Bale

Speaking after Tottenham Hotspur’s 4-0 Premier League victory over Burnley, Jose Mourinho provided an update on the fitness of Spurs’ man of the match in the fixture, Gareth Bale.

Bale was in sensational form for Tottenham, bagging two goals and providing one assist, as well as making one key pass, completing two dribbles and winning five duels, all of which culminated in a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 8.9 – ranking him as the club’s best performer in the match.

However, speaking after the game, when Mourinho was questioned as to whether the 31-year-old would now be starting in both of Spurs’ upcoming fixtures against Fulham and Dinamo Zagreb, the 58-year-old cast some doubt on the £18m-rated forward’s availability.

The manager said: “Day after day, day after day, and as I was saying, he is experienced and his knowledge of his body and his feelings are going to be fundamental.

“A player that gives me this kind of performance of course I want to play him on Thursday and on Sunday, and I want to play him next week against Dinamo Zagreb but I don’t think I can. I don’t think I can.”

Transfer Tavern Take

Indeed, Bale’s performances in recent fixtures – the Welshman has scored four goals and provided three assists over his last four appearances in all competitions – could be an indication that the Real Madrid loanee is beginning to get back to his best at Spurs.

However, considering just how blighted the 31-year-old has been by injury so far this season, perhaps Mourinho’s cautious approach to the forward’s future game-time is a way of ensuring that Bale remains as fit as possible over his remaining time in north London.

Palace Predicted XI vs Burnley

Crystal Palace play host to Burnley on Saturday looking to get back to winning ways in the Premier League after the 2-0 defeat to Leeds United on Monday night.

However, Roy Hodgson will be without at least seven players for the Eagles’ game against Burnley, including chief talisman Wilfried Zaha, which may throw a spanner in the works.

Zaha has been in superb form for Palace so far this season but he was forced off in last week’s 2-1 win at Newcastle United, limping off the pitch after suffering a hamstring injury and subsequently missed the defeat to Leeds.

Hodgson could make as many as four changes for this afternoon, and with that in mind, here is Football FanCast’s predicted starting XI.

Vicente Guaita is once again expected to start in goal ahead of Jack Butland as has become the norm.

Palace could make a couple of changes in defence with Patrick van Aanholt dropping back to left-back. Tyrick Mitchell has played a lot of football lately but struggled against Leeds so he could be given a rest against Burnley today.

Cheikhou Kouyate is also back in contention after being left on the bench for the trip to Elland Road. The 31-year-old could replace Scott Dann in the middle of the back four with Gary Cahill keeping his place while Nathaniel Clyne will once again start at right-back.

Club captain Luka Milivojevic offered little against Leeds, so switching Eberechi Eze to the left and bringing Andros Townsend in on the right shoulder of Jairo Riedewald should be a tempting option for Hodgson.

Upfront, things get a little more interesting, as new signing Jean-Philippe Mateta could be in contention with Christian Benteke still seeking to replicate the form that saw him score 17 goals in his first season at Selhurst Park, but the big Belgian is Hodgson’s trusted man for the big occasion.

Michy Batshuayi will form the rest of the strikeforce ahead of Jordan Ayew in the absence of the injured Zaha, having come off the bench to replace Mateta in the second half against Leeds.

Murphy must utilise Yedlin’s Newcastle exit

Jacob Murphy must seize on DeAndre Yedlin’s imminent move to Galatasaray and lock down the right-back spot in Steve Bruce’s Newcastle United squad.

What’s the word?

According to ESPN, Yedlin will travel to Istanbul to carry out his medical after agreeing to join the Super Lig giants on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Newcastle have agreed a fee with Galatasaray to part with the United States international ahead of Monday night’s deadline, as Yedlin had entered into the final six-months of his £30,000-per-week deal.

Yedlin’s original preference had been to stay at St. James’ Park and he was offered assurances that he would feature in the remainder of the season, but will depart after the Toon opted against tabling a new contract offer.

The fee Galatasaray will pay Newcastle for Yedlin is thought to be based on his performances and appearances for the Turk Telekom Stadium natives, who currently trail rivals Fenerbahce and Besiktas in a close-fought battle for the Super Lig title.

Yedlin had been made available for a transfer last summer amid interest from Turkish and Major League Soccer outfits, with Bruce open to the fact that he would face a battle to displace Javier Manquillo and Emil Krafth in the first-team picture.

The 27-year-old ultimately had to wait until December’s 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion to make his Premier League season debut, playing the final four minutes, before starting five of the Toon’ following seven top-flight fixtures. A visa issue meant he last featured on January 12th.

Yedlin’s exit is Murphy’s chance

Bruce had persisted with Manquillo and Krafth rotating duties at right-back before offering Yedlin a recall over the festive period, while occasionally turning to Murphy to play out of position with Miguel Almiron frequently fielded on the wing.

Manquillo was the one favoured for Saturday’s 2-0 win over Everton as Newcastle snapped an 11-game winless run, but Murphy must now seize on Yedlin’s exit if he is to secure himself a regular starting role at St. James’ Park for the first time in his Magpies career.

Bruce had no place for Murphy in his matchday squad at Goodison Park, for only the third time all season and first since September, and has chosen to start the 25-year-old in just eight of his 13 Premier League outings this term. Only during the 2017/18 campaign when Rafa Benitez handed the £3m-rated maestro 13 starts in 25 games, has he opened more fixtures.

Of those starts under Bruce, half have come at right-back and three of which have returned Murphy’s best match ratings from WhoScored, having impressed enough to warrant a 7.74 at Wolves, a 7.08 against Leeds and a 7.01 at home to Everton.

For comparison, three of his four starts at right-midfield have returned scores below 6.3, including a 6.05 when beaten by Chelsea.

Manquillo earned a 6.99 rating during Saturday’s win over Everton for his third-best score of the season – a term-high 7.38 was achieved at West Ham on the opening day – while Krafth enjoyed his campaign-best showing at home to Burnley in October when awarded a 6.9.

Murphy has further offered a higher interceptions per game (1.5) score than Krafth (1.3) and Manquillo (0.7), and has shown that he is able to drive play up the field more successfully after snatching possession with 3.5 out of 5.5 dribbles to the Sweden international’s 0.3/0.5 and Spaniard’s 0/0.9, per WhoScored.

The 25-year-old is additionally more productive at the top of the pitch with 0.8 accurate crosses from 3.1 deliveries a game to Krafth’s 0.3/2.8 and Manquillo’s 0.7/3.1, for a higher rate of key passes with 0.8 to 0.5 and 0.6 respectively.

So, if Murphy is to establish himself anywhere in Bruce’s plans, it is likely to be at right-back, and thus he must seize on Yedlin’s departure to prove himself as more than just occasional cover.

Ivan Toney: Carlo Ancelotti can redefine Everton with swoop for Brentford striker

Carlo Ancelotti can redefine Everton’s attack by signing Brentford’s “hungry” marksman Ivan Toney, who compares himself with Swedish icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

What’s the word?

According to Calciomercato, Toney has emerged as a potential option for Everton to target following his stellar form this season as their Director of Football Marcel Brands considers bolstering Ancelotti’s strike force.

Toney joined Championship side Brentford from Peterborough in the summer on a five-year contract, in a £5million deal that could reach a maximum fee of £10m through add-ons.

Posh had slapped a £13m asking price on the forward last winter amid interest from Burnley and AFC Bournemouth, feeling the former Newcastle United man was the best young striker outside of the Premier League with Middlesbrough, Cardiff, Bristol City and Derby County also keen.

Toney ultimately joined Brentford for less than half what Peterborough had hoped for, despite netting 26 goals and penning seven assists across all competitions last term, and has already started to hit home in the Championship with a hand in 15 goals (13 scored, two assisted) and counting this season.

Bees boss Thomas Frank was full of praise for Toney when he unveiled the 24-year-old at the Brentford Community Stadium this summer, claiming: “We are adding a hungry, ambitious, hard-working striker to the group here.

“He fits what I want in a striker; he is a goalscorer, he gets into good positions in the box, he is good playing on the last line, and will contribute to our link-up play. Our strikers are a big part of our pressing game, and Ivan, with his work ethic, will help us with that.”

Chance to redefine Everton

Ancelotti would have the chance to redefine Everton if Brands were to target Toney in an upcoming window, as the Toffees have become vastly reliant on wide players to carry the Goodison Park outfit in recent months.

The Blues’ reliance on wide players was evident most while without Richarlison following the Brazilian’s red card in the Merseyside Derby, with Everton creating just two on-target shots at Southampton, four on-target efforts at Newcastle and just one on-target strike at home to Manchester United in three straight defeats.

Richarlison’s return for last month’s trip to Fulham instantly saw a change of fortunes as Everton directed seven of their nine shots on target, with the others blocked, while the Brazilian provided one key ball and accounted for three of his side’s efforts, per WhoScored.

Toney’s ability to harry opposition defences would also allow Ancelotti to free Dominic Calvert-Lewin and open spaces for James Rodriguez to occupy, and have little fear the Newcastle flop – who left St. James’ Park after four goalless appearances – will struggle.

The Bees star is confident to the edge of arrogance, claiming his self-belief is to the same degree as Sweden icon Ibrahimovic, whom he sees similarities with on the field.

“I’ve always liked Zlatan. I just love his confidence. Some people see it as arrogance, but you must be like that to succeed,” he told The Sun.

“I’m similar to Zlatan in both my confidence and the way I play. When he wants to do something, he just does it. I have some of that in my game and personality. And I believe I’ll be a Premier League striker.”

Sheffield Wednesday: Tony Pulis praises Pelupessy %%page%% %%sep%% %%sitename%%

Many Sheffield Wednesday fans are reacting to a tweet from Dom Howson which highlights how manager Tony Pulis has been piling the praise on midfielder Joey Pelupessy.

The manager was full of praise for the player after their victory over Coventry City. Howson tweeted out that Pulis said:  “He has got a heart the size of a lion and he is a really good kid around the place.”

It is understandable to see why Pulis was so happy with his performance. The Dutchman picked up a 7.3 rating (SofaScore), won six ground duels and four aerial duels. He also made five tackles.

However, it seems like this type of good performance does not come around enough in the eyes of the Owls fan base, with many fans not believing he is good enough. One fan even called him ‘useless’.

Clearly, the player will have to put in a lot more solid performances to impress the fan base and if he does and helps the side stay up, then these supporters will be sure to change their opinions on him.

Here is what Owls fans said following the comments:

Alli may be allowed to leave on loan by Spurs chairman Levy

Daniel Levy may be open to a loan move away for Spurs ace Dele Alli in the January transfer window, according to Football Insider.

However, as per the news outlet, the chairman of Tottenham Hotspur is keen to resist offers from teams to buy the £46.8m-valued star outright, but that is not to say that he could leave the North London club on a potential loan deal for the rest of the 2020/21 term.

A recruitment source has apparently told the publication that Levy believes that Alli still has a future with the Lilywhites in the long-term, as he is reportedly likely to request a temporary move away from THFC in order to try and get some more game time under his belt, with the potential aim of making England’s Euros squad for next summer under Gareth Southgate.

The attacking midfield player is contracted until 2024 but may not be in the long-term plans of Jose Mourinho based on his lack of time on the pitch.

Alli loan move makes sense

A loan move away for Alli makes sense, given that he has not yet completed a full 90 minutes so far this season, and so moving to another side who could offer him more matches would be a wise idea in order for him to regain some confidence and form ahead of the next campaign.

One thing for sure is that the 24 year-old is a ‘fighter’, and so he will be looking to prove to himself and others just how good of a player he can be.

Liverpool’s Neco Williams could be set to make huge statement against Arsenal in Carabao Cup

Liverpool are preparing to face off against Arsenal for the second time in the space of a week under the lights of Anfield.

The Reds made easy work of securing a win the last time the two sides locked horns – a 3-1 victory puts the reigning champions into second in the Premier League table. Tonight, they’ll hope they can make it two wins out of two against the Gunners as they challenge each other for a spot in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

It’s likely Jurgen Klopp will once again field a youthful side in order to keep senior personnel from picking up any injuries. The likes of Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott could return to the stage, alongside 19-year-old Neco Williams.

The deputy right-back has a chance to blow everyone out of the water with a strong performance tonight, something that should redeem him in the eyes of many fans.

After his performance against Lincoln City – despite the 7-2 scoreline – Williams received a hefty amount of backlash on social media.

According to Sofascore, the Wales international lost possession 15 times and was able to make just one of his attempted five crosses. However, despite some clumsy passes, Williams boasted two interceptions, two tackles and 2/3 successful dribbles. Given the fact he was also not at fault for either of Lincoln’s goals, it’s a respectable performance for a recent academy graduate.

Unfair Criticism of Neco Williams

Following the barrage of Twitter abuse, Williams blacked out his profile. This led to a number of independent fan sites issuing scoldings to those that had forced the teen off social media.

The pressure of living up to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s dream transition into first team football weighs heavily on Williams’ shoulders. It seems that many supporters have grown accustomed to the 21-year-old’s exceptional situation and now expect the same kind of journey for his understudy.

It’s likely he will be selected to start against Arsenal this evening as the Reds hope to upset Mikel Arteta’s side once more. If he does, Williams must grab this opportunity with both hands and use it as a chance to silence those who lambasted his recent performance.
