LFC fans delighted at big Salah update

A number of Liverpool fans have been showing their happiness at the news that Mohamed Salah could reportedly sign a new deal this summer.

The Reds didn’t have a huge amount to shout about last season, even though they ended up salvaging their campaign with a third-place finish.

It was a year that saw so many players drop below their best level, with the likes of Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino particularly culpable, in that respect.

Someone who couldn’t be blamed for Liverpool’s shortcomings was Salah, however, with the Egyptian scoring 31 goals, in all competitions.

The 28-year-old showed what a priceless player he remains and the idea of him leaving the club doesn’t bear thinking about.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, Liverpool will focus their attention on tying Salah down to a new deal this summer, hoping he commits his future to the club well into his 30s.

ARY Gold Cup Final: Pre match scenario

A full house at the Sharjah stadium and millions of cricket fans in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and other countries of the world shall be anxiously awaiting the ARY Gold Cup Tournament reaching its climax, when the two finalists Pakistan and Sri Lanka take the field today (Friday) afternoon. The two Asian giants who have shared many honors between themselves in the past, shall clash with full force to clinch the prestigious trophy. With the remarkable feat of securing 8 points through 4 straight victories in the tournament as against 2 points each won by Sri Lanka and New Zealand, Pakistan dominates the show. There is no denying the fact that the Pakistan team has performed marvelously well in the league matches on its favorite hunting ground. Supported also by the law of averages, Pakistan emerges as the natural `favorite’.Like scores of other observers of the game, Sri Lanka coach Dave Whatmore also accepts Pakistan as the favorites to win the finals, at the same time stressing that his side was capable of putting up a tough fight. Similarly New Zealand Captain Craig McMillan whose team received a thorough beating at the hands of Pakistan, termed Pakistan as `slightly favorite’. He also expressed the view that Sri Lanka was a tough side capable of beating any team on its day.Skipper Sanath Jayasuriya who blamed his side’s poor fielding for defeat in league matches, however, considers his team a hard nut to crack and capable of springing a surprise. Evaluating the remarkable feats that they have performed in the past, I tend to agree with him. It was just their bad luck to lose to the Black Caps in the last encounter. It is otherwise a bitterly fighting outfit. The Pakistan squad participating in the tournament landed at Sharjah without the bunch of stars like Wasim Akram, Moin Khan, Shoaib Akhtar, Yousif Youhana and Azhar Mahmood. It looked handicapped initially but found the right combination to defeat its opponents. A scintilating batting performance by Saeed Anwar, Inzamam ul Haq and Shahid Afridi, effective use of the ball by Saqlain Mushtaq and dynamic leadership by Waqar Younis, however, eliminated all the misgivings. The fact remains that while Saeed Anwar with scores of 90, 88 and 81 and Inzamam with an excellent tally of 44, 87, 71 and 85 contributed the lion’s share to shape Pakistan’s 4 convincing victories, the other batsmen did not show much of a grit. The two matches against the Black Caps were won by the top order batsmen while those in waiting did not get a chance even to take the crease.Though Pakistan is likely to be reinforced by the inclusion of Abdur Razzaq, the team can get into trouble if the top order batting does not click. Realising the situation Sri Lanka would naturally aim at getting Saeed Anwar, Inzamam and Afridi out early in the innings.Another aspect to rejuvenate Sri Lanka’s fighting spirit would be the fact that unlike the Black Caps, they lost the two matches to Pakistan by a marginal difference of 16 and 28 runs, which can be made up by grabbing all the chances that come in their way. The front line batsman Atapattu who has not gone beyond the top score of 36 in the tournament must regain his form. Same applies to Muttiah Muralitharan who appears to have lost his magic. The final of a tournament normally brings up the resurgence of fighting spirit on both sides, irrespective of the past performance. No side can thus take the victory as granted. Pakistan may be the favorites but Sri Lanka is not the side to give in easily. So let us watch the tough and exciting final with anxiety and eagerness without pinning hopes on any of the two giants.

Dor Peretz: West Ham’s bargain Noble heir?

West Ham United could land themselves an ideal heir to Mark Noble for nothing this summer…

What’s the word?

According to Sport1, the Irons are interested in signing Maccabi Tel Aviv midfielder Dor Peretz, who is out of contract at the end of the current season.

However, it is claimed that the Premier League side face stiff competition from Russian giants CSKA Moscow and that they are leading the race to secure his signature, having offered him a €1m-per-year (£865k) deal.

The Israeli outfit still have a few matches to play in their season, so no decision on his future is expected anytime soon.

Noble heir?

The Hammers’ club captain is due to play one final season next term after he confirmed back in March that he would be bringing the curtain down on an 18-year career in East London.

Whilst the 33-year-old has been restricted to a lack of game time on the pitch, featuring in only 704 minutes this league campaign, his presence off it is still of huge importance.

‘He is still one of the leaders in the dressing room and is a helpful conduit between the owners and the squad,’ wrote The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas earlier in the year.

This sort of void is really irreplaceable but David Moyes could help himself and the club by finding a viable replacement, and perhaps he has done exactly that with the Maccabi vice-captain.

The 26-year-old is primarily a defensive midfielder but has chipped in with plenty of goals, finding the net ten times in all competitions this term. On top of providing nine assists, as per Transfermarkt.

Peretz has also played a whopping 50 matches, both domestically and in Europe, proving to be the sort of player that you can trust to not get injured and always be fit and firing – something that Noble has been for a long part of his career.

Furthermore, the 6 foot 1 powerhouse has picked up 20 caps for Israel, which makes him an even more attractive prospect as he’s available for nothing.

His former national team boss Andi Herzog has tipped him for big things in the past, too – speaking to Walla! he claimed the Maccabi star “belongs at the top” as he can play either the no.6 or no.8 role.

He also suggested that had Peretz been playing in the Bundesliga, then he’d be “worth €20m (£18m).”

The Hammers have had success with Israeli players before; Yossi Benayoun and Eyal Berkovic, to name just two.

Whilst it’ll take an impressive character to take the place of Noble, it would be a low-risk move to take a punt on the 26-year-old this summer.

Celtic: Will Dembele get his first start?

Celtic youngster Karamoko Dembele has been waiting patiently in the wings for two years now.

It has been an arduous time for the Hoops prodigy, a player who broke onto the scene as a 16-year-old in 2019 but still only has seven first team appearances to his name.

The Bhoys have done well not to overexpose him but there is a fine line to be had. The truth is that Neil Lennon and now John Kennedy haven’t utilised him as much as they should.

Dembele has played so little that there are growing concerns over his future in Paradise. For a long while it was thought that the 18-year-old’s contract would expire at the end of the season, but Kennedy provided welcome news in the week that the teenager still has one year left on his deal.

However, if he doesn’t want to stick around, this will be their final opportunity to receive a fee for his services. If he still hasn’t signed by January, then Dembele will be free to speak to foreign clubs.

To lose a player of his calibre on a free transfer would be simply disastrous, especially now he looks set to make a proper breakthrough in Glasgow.

Dembele came off the bench in the 4-0 win over St Johnstone a few days ago to score his first senior goal. It has been a long time coming but it was taken like a player who’s been at the top for years.

David Turnbull played an inch-perfect ball into the teenager’s path before he burst away from the defence and calmly found the back of the net.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-howe-favre-mcgregor-mccann-tierney” title=”Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

He had a sensational impact and, if he doesn’t start on Saturday against Hibernian, it will feel like a crime against football, a devilish act deliberately made to trigger Celtic supporters.

The Hoops have nothing to play for on the final day of the campaign so this feels like the perfect time to finally unleash the winger. There is no pressure and no great expectation.

Speaking about Dembele in the week, Kennedy said: “Karamoko has been spoken about as the next superstar, but people develop physically at different rates. He is probably one who still has a bit of development, but is a terrific talent – we know that.”

Kennedy knows a flourishing young player when he sees one. He was crucial in the development of Kieran Tierney when he was coming through the ranks at Parkhead.

The left-back made a seamless transition to first team football, one that Dembele will now hope to follow. He has already made an impact at senior level and, if his goal on Wednesday tells you anything, it’s that he’s ready to start from the off.

Forget about Mohamed Elyounoussi, Celtic need to focus on players who will actually be at the club next season.

Liverpool handed Nathaniel Phillips blow

Liverpool are once again set to be without Nathaniel Phillips for their clash against Manchester United this weekend.

The Reds centre-back has been ruled out for each of the last two Premier League matches with a hamstring problem and does not look set to return for Sunday’s clash. Ahead of the trip to Old Trafford, Jurgen Klopp suggested that all of the team’s injury problems are “all the same”, which suggests that Phillips is still continuing his recovery.

The news will be a sickener for Klopp and the team, with the 24-year-old having become one their main options at centre-back in the respective absences of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Jordan Henderson this season.

Indeed, Phillips has appeared on 15 occasions in all competitions so far this season, with Liverpool having only lost on four occasions when he has taken to the pitch thus far. Meanwhile, the Reds have not won a Premier League game in which he hasn’t appeared since the 7-0 drubbing of Crystal Palace back in mid-December.

However, in his absence, Fabinho will once again be required to step into the backline – a selection which has not yielded positive results recently. In the two Premier League matches that Phillips has missed since picking up his injury, Liverpool have been held to frustrating 1-1 draws by both Leeds and Newcastle.

Heading to Old Trafford in what is a key game for the Reds’ aspirations of finishing in the top four, Klopp would certainly have wanted to name the £65,000-per-week Phillips in the backline and move Fabinho back to his natural position in the middle of the park.

However, that does not seem like a possibility now with the Englishman continuing his stint on the sidelines.

Newcastle first teamer wants new club

A ‘first teamer’ at Newcastle United has reportedly instructed his agent to go out and find him a new club, according to Football Insider.

As per the news outlet, he is described as being ‘experienced’ and an ‘international star’, and was previously happy to stay at St. James’ Park even if the Tyneside club were to find themselves relegated from the Premier League down to the EFL Championship.

However, a source in the North East has told the publication that he has now set his sights ‘firmly’ on the exit door, and wants to exit regardless of what division the Magpies are playing in come the start of the 2021/22 term.

The player is not being named by the outlet in order to protect his identity, but is believed to still have a number of years left remaining on his current deal at the Toon.

The U-turn has come as a result of the fallout of the 3-0 loss away to Brighton and Hove Albion in the top flight on Saturday night, to which he was reportedly left ‘fuming’ about.

More Newcastle misery

Although the player is not named, the fact that he has been described as a ‘first teamer’ and an ‘international star’ will surely worry many NUFC fans.

It is perhaps not a surprise to hear that he wants to leave given what has been going on at Newcastle lately, as supporters can only hope that he will change his mind again and wish to stay.

Liverpool must avoid Mbemba swoop

Liverpool’s search for a centre-back has seen them turn to some unconventional places.

Going through a defensive injury crisis, they turned to Ozan Kabak, who was brought in on loan from Bundesliga basement club Schalke 04. Meanwhile, Ben Davies was recruited from Championship outfit Preston North End.

Now, the Reds have reportedly turned their attention to a former Premier League flop in the form of FC Porto’s Chancel Mbemba.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, the Reds are interested in his services, but it has to be suggested that they can do better in their search for defensive recruits.

Of course, the Congolese is a capable defender despite struggling in his time with Newcastle United, where he was frozen out by Rafael Benitez and suffered relegation in 2016.

He has recovered from his poor spell at St James’ Park, where he played just 59 times across three seasons, with current employers Porto, having played 33 times in all competitions during the current campaign.

Also, with the report suggesting that he could be available for as low as €15m (£12.88m) with his contract ticking down, it is difficult to argue that a potential move wouldn’t be shrewd.

However, that price and Mbemba’s statistics suggest that he wouldn’t quite be the centre-back Jurgen Klopp’s men need.

According to WhoScored, the £9.9m-rated 26-year-old is averaging 0.8 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 0.5 blocks and 3.1 clearances per match for Porto this season in the league.

When compared to January arrival Kabak, the Turk is statistically a lot more convincing on the pitch with 2.3 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, three clearances and 0.5 blocks.

As a matter of fact, Mbemba is also being outperformed by current Reds Joel Matip and Nathaniel Phillips.

It makes more sense, then, for Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards to stick with the defenders they currently have at their disposal at Anfield, or indeed take the search for a centre-back elsewhere as opposed to Porto’s Mbemba.
