Moyes’ predicted West Ham XI vs Zagreb

David Moyes is likely to make wholesale changes to his West Ham United side as they welcome Dinamo Zagreb to the London Stadium for their final Europa League group game this evening.

With a spot in the knockout stages already confirmed, the Irons only have an unbeaten record to uphold, knowing otherwise that the result changes nothing in the grand scheme of things.

The Scot is also dealing with several injury troubles, so it gives him an opportunity to test out a few things and rest some key names but exactly what sort of XI could we see tonight?

Here’s what Football FanCast are predicting as the 58-year-old opts for a mix of youth and fringe options…

There could be as many as ten changes from the side that defeated Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, with the only player to remain being central defender Issa Diop.

In the absence of injured trio Kurt Zouma, Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson, Moyes could turn to one of the U23s’ biggest prospects in Jamal Baptise, a 6-foot youngster dubbed a “monster” and tipped to become the next Rio Ferdinand in east London.

They will also be joined by another academy talent in Harrison Ashby, who starts at right-back, with Arthur Masuaku on the other flank. The 20-year-old is believed to be “very fearless” and a “big unit” too.

Alphonse Areola should resume his duties as the cup ‘keeper, handing a rest to Lukasz Fabianski between the sticks.

In midfield, it is all change as club captain Mark Noble and another rarely-seen loanee in Alex Kral replace vice-skipper Declan Rice and Czech compatriot Tomas Soucek, whilst Moyes has confirmed that Croatian playmaker Nikola Vlasic will start, so he’s preferred to Manuel Lanzini in the advanced role.

Andriy Yarmolenko could get an opportunity in the attack, alongside Said Benrahma, who must impress after being axed at the weekend following a string of poor performances.

Meanwhile, it is 17-year-old sensation Sonny Perkins who could lead the line for the Hammers this evening, meaning the likes of Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen are rested.

AND in other news, West Ham could end striker transfer nightmare with “absolute predator”…

West Ham fans flock to Origi claim

Flocking to Twitter, some West Ham United fans have erupted over a transfer update by ExWHUemployee involving Liverpool striker Divock Origi.

Irons boss David Moyes has been eager to land an alternative centre-forward to Michail Antonio as he recently confirmed to the press (Daily Mail), but his side now also have other concerns in the defensive department.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Injuries to Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma have prompted West Ham to seek central defensive reinforcements with GSB and new head of recruitment Rob Newman tasked with helping to maintain Moyes’ push on all fronts.

The Hammers have made into to the Europa League Last 16 phase whilst also continuing their pursuit of a top four finish, with their Carabao Cup efforts also on the line.

In terms of potentially landing a new striker in January, some news has emerged as reliable club insider Ex shares an update on West Ham’s interest in Origi.

According to the club source, via his West Ham Way website, Moyes and co could make a move to sign the Belgium ace in January and it would ‘not be a surprise at all’ if they do so.

The 26-year-old has also been ‘very close’ to joining previously and his lack of game time at Anfield may well mean he departs the club.

Irons erupt…

Flocking to this news, some Hammers fans have erupted on social media with some labelling Origi the ‘perfect’ striker signing.

Still fairly young, an experienced 31-cap international and big game player – it’s clear to see why some feel that way given Jurgen Klopp has even called him ‘really quick’ and a ‘monster’ in the air recently (The Mirror).

His career tally of 63 senior goals at club level indicates he knows where the back of the net is and Origi could be just the signing to come in and back Moyes’ charge for West Ham glory.

Here’s how fans responded to Ex’s news on Twitter:

Clinical New Zealand seal series

Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder’s clinical hitting and Nathan McCullum’s teasing offspin were responsible for driving New Zealand to victory and handing Sri Lanka their fourth Twenty20 loss in a row

Having been beaten soundly in the Test series, New Zealand now head into the tri-series brimming with confidence after a second consecutive 20-over victory over Sri Lanka, this time by 22 runs. Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder’s clinical hitting and Nathan McCullum’s teasing offspin were responsible for driving New Zealand to victory and handing Sri Lanka their fourth Twenty20 loss in a row.Brendon McCullum and Ryder were badly out of form during the Test campaign, but showed both courage and muscle during an 84-run opening stand in 62 deliveries, while Nathan McCullum gave further proof that New Zealand’s limited-overs recruits have helped shape a change in fortunes. When Sri Lanka quickly slumped to 11 for 3 this game looked almost over as a contest, but Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara still had a sting to inflict, adding 67 in 43 balls. Then came the fatal blow in the 11th over, bowled by Nathan McCullum, as Jayawardene and Angelo Mathews departed to clever changes of pace. Thereafter, Sri Lanka were never in the hunt. There were to be no fireworks this evening from Tillakaratne Dilshan, who flicked straight to deep square leg in the first over, giving Shane Bond his first international wicket since 2007. In walked Mahela Udawatte at No. 3, the one change Sri Lanka made, and back out he went after he checked his first ball from Kyle Mills and gave point a dolly. Sri Lanka’s chances dimmed when Mills got Sanath Jayasuriya to miscue to midwicket in the fourth over.Mills’ third over wasn’t as productive, as Jayawardene put away two full tosses and a half-volley on the pads. After the Powerplay overs Sri Lanka were 37 for 3, compared to 64 for 2 on Wednesday. Then Jayawardene and Sangakkara stepped on the gas, rattling up a 50-run stand in 6 overs. Where Jayawardene improvised to dab the ball past Brendon McCullum behind the stumps, walk across and paddle, and pull six over fine leg, all off Ian Butler, Sangakkara used his feet to come out and bisect midwicket and square leg.By now the crowd had roared back to life and New Zealand appeared worried, but in one over the mood changed dramatically. Daniel Vettori called on Nathan McCullum, who came in for this game in place of Peter McGlashan, and within four balls he snapped Sri Lanka’s spine. Jayawardene’s top edge was well held by Ryder at short fine leg, and then Angelo Mathews chipped softly to midwicket. Vettori knew taking the pace off would work, and that was a sensational over from Nathan McCullum.Nathan McCullum put down a very tough caught-and-bowled chance off Sangakkara, who reached his half-century off 40 balls. Sangakkara kept flaying but his luck ran out on 69 when he top-edged back to Oram. Bond completed the dénouement with 3 for 18.It was only a matter of time before Brendon McCullum and Ryder found their groove in coloured clothing. Brendon McCullum got off the mark with a cramped chop to third man, but there was nothing restrained about strokes that raced to the boundaries at backward point, square leg and midwicket. Against Nuwan Kulasekara he began by pulling off his own version of the scoop trademarked by Dilshan, with some help from his helmet, getting way across and scooping the ball from outside off stump, on to Sangakkara’s helmet, for four.Lasith Malinga’s second over cost 19. First Brendon McCullum steered a couple to third man by getting outside leg stump, then backed away and carved six over backward point, put a no-ball away for four with power past two off-side fielders, and finished off by slapping three through cover.Ryder had been content allowing his partner take charge, ticking along to 10 by the time Brendon McCullum was 35. Ajantha Mendis came on for one over, the sixth, and allowed just three but Malinga Bandara was given a rude welcome by Ryder, who got down and swatted six over midwicket. He nonchalantly paddled Jayasuriya for four and Brendon McCullum slammed Dilshan for a six, his 100th boundary shot in this format. With New Zealand’s run rate 8.30, Jayasuriya struck when Brendon McCullum knocked back a return catch for 49. Ryder accelerated his game efficiently, repeating the slogged six twice off Dilshan in a 20-run 12th over in which he raised his fifty off 31 balls. Then Mendis returned to bowl the next over and immediately had Ryder beaten in the flight and popping an easy catch to extra cover.Jayasuriya, after a break and a change of ends, came back to dismiss Ross Taylor playing across the line for 16. Martin Guptill, demoted to No. 4, jacked the run-rate back with six and a four in Kulasekara’s comeback over, the 17th, which cost 17. Malinga bowled a seven-run final over in which he yorked Guptill for 32, but by getting 87 in the last ten overs New Zealand had done well.So well, in fact, that victory was all too easy.

Apesar do pouco apelo do torneio, o volante quer ver o Fla campeão.

Leeds star Phillips told to join Liverpool

Kalvin Phillips should join Liverpool over Manchester United if he leaves Leeds United, according to Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson.

The Lowdown: Phillips on the move?

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the past 12 months or so, maturing into one of the Premier League’s best midfielders and becoming a hero for England.

Phillips’ performances for club and country have been hugely influential – he was crowned the Three Lions’ player of the year – but the only downside of that is that it has led to interest from some of the country’s biggest clubs.

The £36million-rated Englishman’s current Leeds deal expires in the summer of 2024.

The Latest: Pundit makes Liverpool claim

Writing for the Daily Star, former Arsenal hero Merson told Phillips to choose Liverpool over United if he leaves, given the hatred between Leeds and the latter:

“Kalvin Phillips should join Liverpool, not Manchester United. But I don’t think he takes either of those teams to another level. He’s a good player who would play every week whichever one he signs for. But not a gamechanger.

“If he goes to Anfield he will still be remembered as a Leeds United hero. But if he goes to Old Trafford that all goes out the window.

“And a Leeds United player going to Manchester United? Wow. Better start well. That’s pressure. At Leeds he will get burnt out. I think he’s virtually left on his own too much in midfield at Leeds and he has to do everything.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-22/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Tough to keep hold of

Unfortunately, the Whites are going to find it hard to keep hold of Phillips, considering there is a strong chance he would like to test himself in the Champions League.

Given the force Liverpool are under Jurgen Klopp – they have already scored a remarkable 42 goals this season – it would be hard to begrudge him a move to Anfield, especially as theiur energetic style of play could suit him down to the ground just like Marcelo Bielsa’s does.

A switch to United would be received far less well, however, and it is something Phillips surely wouldn’t do.

In other news, Leeds could have to break their transfer record to sign one player. Read more here.

50-over cricket must evolve to survive – Gilchrist

Adam Gilchrist, the former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman, has said that mind games in Twenty20 cricket are on par with Test cricket and believes the format is not given its due credit.”The mind games that go on in Twenty20 are on par with any cricket that I have played, be it Test cricket. The challenge between the bowler and the batter is almost like a game of poker where the two guys are staring at each other and the first one to blink is the one that out,” he said. “There are so many questions in your mind; should you go hard on this ball, do you wait a bit? I am sure it’s the same with the bowler. Do I want to pump in, do I bowl the yorker, or defensively or attack him?”The reason I think this format is at par with Test cricket is because the mental pressure comes in as there is very little time to rectify an error. Test cricket one has five days to turn things around but here one wrong decision can prove costly.”Former players like Martin Crowe have said that Twenty20 cricket has already given the 50-over game an identity crisis. Though he believes 50-over cricket should stay, Gilchrist said it has to evolve to survive.”I do not know where 50-over cricket will land up. Twenty20 cricket came up due to the saturation of 50-over cricket. We do not want to saturate Twenty20 cricket. Cricket is a game that can mutate without losing its basic nature. We tried six-a-side and eight-a-side but that’s changing the basics of the game too much.”Gilchrist reiterated that for him Test cricket is the biggest form of game but that he has transformed from a reluctant Twenty20 player to being a fan. “It is a skillful game. I am a firm believer in Test cricket, and that for me, as the phrase goes, proper cricket,” he said. “But I don’t think Twenty20 is mickey mouse cricket either. It has continued to impress me due to how mentally strong one needs to be.”After a slow start, the IPL sprung into action with two close games yesterday. Both games hurtled towards an exciting finish, with one game even ending with a Super Over. Today, in Durban, where the crowd turnout has been poor so far, there was the biggest crowd for the Bangalore Royal Challenger v Kings XI Punjab game. The IPL is slowly coming alive.

Neto in Wolves team photo

Lots of Wolves fans have been left buzzing as some footage emerged involving Pedro Neto.

As shared by the official Twitter page of the Midlands club, the Portugal international can be seen walking with his teammates Ruben Neves and Romain Saiss, before having a laugh and a joke with the rest of the squad as he lined up for their team photo this week.

Neto has not played for the Molineux faithful since he was forced off in the first half of their away match at Fulham in the Premier League back in April through injury, and so several WWFC supporters took a delight to seeing him walk freely and having some banter with his teammates.

The winger has proven how important he is to the side, scoring five goals and supplying a further six assists in 31 games in the top flight last term (Transfermarkt), and will no doubt be eager to get back onto the pitch as soon as possible.

Man City suffer Laporte injury blow

Pep Guardiola has been dealt a blow at Manchester City as Aymeric Laporte has picked up an injury on international duty with Spain.

What’s the word?

The 27-year-old centre-back, who has enjoyed a fine start to the season with the Citizens, was forced off at half-time with an adductor injury in Spain’s 4-0 win against Georgia at the weekend, which will put him in doubt for City’s trip to face Leicester City on Saturday afternoon.

The former Athletic Bilbao man has impressed in each of City’s last two games, which resulted in 5-0 victories against Norwich City and Arsenal, with his 7.61 average rating from WhoScored ranking him as the fifth-best performer in Guardiola’s side so far this season.

A big blow for Guardiola?

There were some suggestions that Laporte could leave during the summer transfer window after he spent much of last season playing second fiddle to Ruben Dias and John Stones, who formed a superb partnership in the heart of City’s defence.

[freshpress-quiz id=“577936”]

However, he remained at the Etihad and his impressive performances thus far have reinforced his immense quality, and he is sure to play a regular part in Guardiola’s side throughout the 2021/22 campaign.

The Spanish manager certainly rates Laporte highly, as he sang his praises following the game against Norwich, saying:

“Aymeric Laporte is the best left-footed centre-back for build-up in the world.”

Unfortunately for Laporte, with Stones surely now close to full fitness, it seems likely that he will resume his partnership with Dias at the back for City’s game at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, and it may be tough for the Spaniard to re-establish his place in the starting lineup following his recovery from injury.

Therefore, it is undoubtedly a blow that the £40.5m-rated man could be set for a spell on the sidelines and City fans will be gutted that he has picked up this injury after such a solid start to the season.

And, in other news… Guardiola set for huge Man City boost with “incredibly talented” star
