HYS: Should Tottenham dump Lamela to sign Quincy Promes?

Tottenham are one of three clubs lining up a summer swoop for Spartak Moscow’s Quincy Promes, but will it mean the end of Erik Lamela at Tottenham?

According to a report from Poka Moscow (via Back Page Football), Tottenham will battle Newcastle and Roma this summer for the signature of Quincy Promes.

The electric Dutch winger has grabbed an impressive 21 goals in all competitions for Spartak Moscow, and has terrified defences all season with his pace, directness and clinical finishing.

Tottenham are of course quite stacked in the attacking midfield department, in fact it’s probably the area least in need of strengthening this summer.

However, Erik Lamela could leave the club after a difficult season, and Promes would certainly be an upgrade on the Argentine.

Lamela grabbed two goals in the crazy final day win over Leicester, but has only started seven Premier League games this season, and isn’t the type of player that’s going to really push Tottenham to the next level.

Fans have always appreciated the tricky winger for his work rate and passion for the badge, but a choice of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-min, Lucas Moura and Quincy Promes for those three positions behind Harry Kane would be truly terrific for Tottenham.

So, Spurs fans, would you dump Lamela in order to sign Promes? Let us know by voting in the poll below…

Leeds fans react to Vieira’s England selection

Leeds United midfielder Ronaldo Vieira has been handed a call-up to the England Under-21 squad for this summer’s Toulon Tournament.

Vieira made 32 appearances for Leeds during the 2017-18 campaign – scoring once and providing three assists for the Championship club.

The 19-year-old is highly regarded at Elland Road, and will make the step up from England Under-20s to the Under-21s squad this summer.

The Leeds fans have been reacting to the news, and a number were keen to pay tribute to the teenager, who is contracted to his current team until the summer of 2021.

However, there are also those that feel the central midfielder could do with a summer of rest ahead of the 2018-19 campaign, and it is a fair point when considering the amount of football Vieira has played at such a young age.

That said, surely the positives of representing his country at Under-21 level will far outweigh the negatives.

Revealed: Incredible 85% of Everton fans want to keep Davy Klaassen

Davy Klaassen has spoken out about his nightmare start at Everton, and fans have been voting on whether the Dutchman deserves another chance.

When Davy Klaassen moved to Goodison last summer, fans were excited about the playmaking force that guided a young Ajax side to a Europa League final as their captain and talisman.

The Toffees seemed to get a shell of the player that had looked so superb in that Ajax side though, as the £23.5m move resulted in just three Premier League starts.

Klaassen has been speaking out about his future this week, and it sounds like the 25 year-old is itching to prove himself.

“My overall experience at Everton has been good… the club is excellent and the people are very nice,” he said.

“It is an ambitious club and I 100 per cent enjoy being here. I feel at home and am determined to play more for the team.”

Klaassen grabbed 14 league goals in his last season with Ajax, an incredible number considering the countless goals he also created with his fantastic eye for a pass and wonderful crossing technique.

Tottenham fans react as Walkes nears exit

Tottenham Hotspur defender Anton Walkes is on the verge of leaving the Premier League club for Portsmouth, according to Portsmouth News.

The 21-year-old ended the 2017-18 campaign on loan at League One outfit Portsmouth following a spell with Atlanta United in the MLS.

Walkes has made a first-team appearance for Tottenham, but that came in a EFL Cup match back in September 2016, and he has not featured since.

Walkes, who is capable of operating in both defence and midfield, was highly-rated during his time in the youth system at Tottenham.

The Englishman has struggled to make the step into the first team, however, and it is being reported that he is closing on a permanent move to Portsmouth.

The Tottenham fans, who have also been commenting on the rumours surrounding Ivan Perisic, have been reacting to the report, and many are not surprised to learn that Walkes is nearing an exit.

That said, one Spurs supporter claimed that Walkes is currently better than first-team defender Serge Aurier, and should be given the chance to stake a claim.

West Ham fans react to Javier Hernandez’s comments on his future

According to ESPN, West Ham United striker Javier Hernandez was reportedly asked while on 2018 World Cup duty with Mexico whether he would prefer to play for a mid-table Spanish club in La Liga for $5m-a-year or the MLS for $10m-a-year, and Irons fans have been quick to react to his comments.

The 30-year-old endured a difficult debut campaign at the London Stadium where he struggled to get a regular spot in the starting XI under previous boss David Moyes, instead often finding himself as back-up to Marko Arnautovic in the centre-forward role even though it isn’t the Austrian’s natural position.

When asked whether he would prefer a return to Spain to play for a mid-table side on less money or to play in America for more while on duty with his country, he replied, as per ESPN: “$5 million in Spain.”

West Ham supporters, who could be about to see co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan make their best decision since they arrived at the club, took to social media to give their thoughts on the quotes, and while one said “he clearly wants to leave”, another said “I’m starting to think that selling him could be a good idea”.

Arsenal fans wonder why Ramsey is not included in Emery’s ‘top five’

When a new manager arrives at a club, players need to go all out to impress the new figure, and that is no different at Arsenal.

Unai Emery will lead the North London outfit into a new era after he was appointed as successor to long-standing coach Arsene Wenger.

The Spaniard has made two signings so far in this window, including right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner and goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Other areas of the defence could do with a tweak, while the midfield also needs addressing following the departure of Jack Wilshere.

According to The Mirror, there are five players within the squad that Emery deem ‘untouchable’, meaning that no amount of cash will persuade him into selling.

They include Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Alexandre Lacazette, Granit Xhaka and Hector Bellerin.

Instantly, Arsenal fans noticed that Aaron Ramsey was not on the list, despite earlier reports that the ex-Paris Saint-Germain boss wanted to build the team around the midfielder.

Crystal Palace: Signing Moussa Dembele could bring the best out of Christian Benteke

According to recent reports from The Daily Record, Palace are interested in Celtic striker Moussa Dembele.

What’s the story?

The Daily Record report that interest in the striker is hotting up, with Palace one of the main clubs in contention.

Everton are the other club to be linked with the forward, but after a £14m move for Cenk Tosun and the signing of Theo Walcott last season, it seems unlikely the Toffees will add another striker to their squad without selling first.

The other option for Dembele appears to be a move to the Bundesliga. Borussia Dortmund are reported to be linked interested, but a return to England is likely the favoured option for the Frenchman.

Should Palace go after his signature?

Dembele, who is valued at £5.4m by transfermarkt.com, is exactly the kind of striker the Eagles need to be looking at in order to really push on next season. Also needing to reignite the career of Christian Benteke, who had a nightmare season last time out, signing Dembele could prove to be an incredibly shrewd move – whether that’s by increasing competition to keep the big Belgian on his toes, or forming a regular strike partnership to ease the goalscoring burden on his shoulders.

Dembele endured an injury-hit 2017/18 for Celtic and scored only 16 goals in his second season at the club, half his total of 32 the season before.

However, his quality is not to be doubted. A return to English football after two trophy-laden seasons at Celtic may be the perfect move for the 21-year-old, and his price tag of £20million should be able to be met by the South London side.

Mascarenhas replaces Malinga at Tasmania

The England allrounder Dimitri Mascarenhas will replace Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga for Tasmania’s Twenty20 campaign this season

Cricinfo staff16-Nov-2009The England allrounder Dimitri Mascarenhas will replace Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga for Tasmania’s Twenty20 campaign this season. The Tigers announced in July that they had signed Malinga but Sri Lanka’s international commitments in January have forced the state to change their plans.”When Malinga was first signed we knew this was a possibility,” David Boon, Cricket Tasmania’s cricket operations general manager, said. “Although it is disappointing, we have a suitable back-up player in Dimitri Mascarenhas who will arrive in Hobart during December.”Mascarenhas, 32, was raised in Australia and has played club cricket in Melbourne and Perth, but this will be his first taste of state cricket in Australia. A regular member of England’s Twenty20 international side, Mascarenhas will offer Tasmania powerful striking and medium-pace bowling.Malinga is not the first Sri Lankan star to sign for the Big Bash only to later become unavailable – South Australia have already gained and then lost Ajantha Mendis, who was replaced by Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi. Victoria are yet to make an announcement on Muttiah Muralitharan, who had agreed to play for the Bushrangers. Each state is allowed to sign two international players for the Big Bash, which runs from late December to January. Chris Gayle has signed with Western Australia, Dwayne Bravo with Victoria, while Kieron Pollard and Afridi will play for South Australia.

ICC chief sees day-night Tests in two years

ICC president David Morgan feels the possibility is very real and close to fruition.

Cricinfo staff16-Dec-2009ICC president David Morgan has given a clear endorsement of day-night Tests, saying he would be “surprised and disappointed” if it didn’t happen in the next two years. He did not, however, commit on the other current Test-related issue, that of a championship in the format.Morgan, who earlier this year had hinted that Test cricket may be reduced to four days, feels the possibility of the five-day game being played under lights is close to fruition.”I’d be surprised if we don’t see day-night Test cricket within the next two years, surprised and disappointed,” Morgan said at a meeting of the Indian Journalists’ Association at The Oval.”If you look at a country like Australia with big stadia and very hot conditions, Australia is made for day-night Test cricket,” he said. “Eighteen months ago, I wouldn’t have been overly enthusiastic, thinking of the tradition and the records. But the way Test match cricket has changed over 130-odd years, I see [day-night Tests] as a very good reason for bringing the crowds out.”Day/night cricket is less important in England and Wales because the grounds, which are relatively small sell-out. It’s more important in countries with large stadia and hot conditions.”The ICC is also looking into creating a World Test Championship, though Morgan shied away from the term and stressed the need for Tests to have context.”In terms of each Test match having a context beyond bilateral series, real progress could be made soon,” he said, adding there might be a “climax” although he didn’t say how this would be achieved.”We want to ensure Test match cricket is as popular around world as it is in this country [England]. The ECB have little trouble in selling out the first four days of a Test.”Attendances for Test cricket in England is healthy as opposed to other countries where it has been on the wane for some years, and the ICC has been in talks about ways to protect and enrich the game’s oldest format in the face of lucrative Twenty20 leagues like the IPL.Other radical changes, such as a two-tier format, had been mooted for the next Future Tours Programme. “At ICC, we regard Test cricket as the pinnacle of the game. It’s the form of the game cricketers seek to play,” he added. “It is interesting Test cricket has endured and I am sure it is going to continue to thrive. The ICC has recognised that in some countries Test-match cricket is not that popular in terms of people paying at the gate. It needs to be a competitive event and it needs pitches that provide a good balance between bat and ball.”Morgan’s comments came a day after it was announced that the first-class game in the West Indies will include radical innovations such as day-night matches and the use of pink balls to boost spectator interest.
