West Brom flop who left on a free in 2021 now outperforming Diangana

West Brom conceded in the final dying moments at the Hawthorns last match to lose to Leicester City 2-1, exposed on the break after overcommitting numbers with Harry Winks sliding in to convert a crucial winner for Enzo Maresca's Foxes.

Carlos Corberan will hope that his Baggies side won't be too disheartened by the nature of narrow defeat, that loss was only West Brom's second loss from their last five Championship matches with wins coming in the other contests.

Grady Diangana continues to underperform for the West Midlands side which will be a worry for Corberan, the exciting Congolese forward coming away from the Leicester match with a dire overall 6.2 Sofascore rating.

It was a lacklustre 75-minute display from the Baggies number 11 – only mustering up one shot all game which was blocked – with his first team future in jeopardy if he continues to underwhelm.

On the contrary, former West Brom dud Kamil Grosicki – who can usually operate on the opposite flank to where Diangana regularly features for his team – is now outperforming the misfiring 25-year-old with his new employers back in his native Poland.

How much West Brom signed Kamil Grosicki for

West Brom must have thought they'd struck gold when they signed a then in-form Grosicki for a reported fee of £800k with add ons, poaching the winger from Hull City.

Grosicki had been a consistent bright spark for the Tigers amidst turmoil off the field alongside Jarrod Bowen, the popular Polish attacker breaking Hull hearts when he moved on – scoring 26 goals and assisting a further 27 over four seasons at the MKM Stadium.

The move to West Brom just didn't work out for Grosicki however, leaving the Hawthorns on a free transfer after a torrid short stay at the club.

Kamil Grosicki's statistics at West Brom

Grosicki would only manage to score one goal for the Baggies from 19 appearances, the attacking midfielder never acclimatising to his new surroundings in the west Midlands fully.

It led to Grosicki having a frosty relationship with then West Brom boss Sam Allardyce, the one-time Bolton Wanderers boss turned Baggies short-term appointment calling the former Tigers man out for rejecting a move away from the club that could have been a lifeline.

Allardyce was rather blunt when questioned about Grosicki's lack of opportunities at the Hawthorns in the first team: "He could've gone to Nottingham Forest, but he refused."

Instead, Grosicki would have to pick up the pieces of his disintegrating football career back in his native Poland when he was released by the Baggies in 2021 with the 35-year-old now having the last laugh.

Grosicki would rejoin Pogoń Szczecin, the club that started the Polish winger's footballing journey in 2006 that saw him play in the EFL and beyond.

Kamil Grosicki's statistics since leaving West Brom

The 35-year-old, who now wears the captain's armband for his hometown club, has been the standout performer this season for Pogoń Szczecin.

Scoring 13 times in total during his first full season back on home soil, the experienced attacker has eight goals and nine assists in all competitions so far this campaign.

Three of those goal contributions even came in Europa Conference qualifying for Pogoń Szczecin, helping his team beat Northern Irish opposition Linfield 5-2 away at Windsor Park.

In contrast, Diangana for the Baggies only has three goals and three assists in Championship action this season.

Grosicki will continue firing in goals and providing teammates with assists out in Poland to end his career with a bang, whilst Diangana back at the Hawthorns needs to pick up form quickly or face the axe by an impatient Corberan.

"Time to move" – BBC pundit thinks Spurs star could join a top club soon

BBC pundit and former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton believes one of manager Ange Postecoglou's "reliable" players could actually join a top European side soon.

Hojbjerg and Dier expected to leave Spurs

Despite being mainstays under former Spurs boss Antonio Conte, both Eric Dier and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are now facing very uncertain futures.

Dier's contract is set to expire in 2024 and there are no signs that the Englishman will be offered a renewal any time soon. The centre-back has only just come back into Postecoglou's starting eleven, playing their last two matches after Micky van de Ven's serious hamstring injury and Cristian Romero's suspension.

Dier's lack of pace isn't suited to Postecoglou's high defensive line, and when Tottenham's favoured centre-back pairing return, it is likely he will be relegated to the bench again.

Hojbjerg, meanwhile, has been repeatedly linked with a move to Europe following his lack of starting opportunities under Postecoglou this season. The Denmark star has recently come back into the fold amid Spurs' current injury crisis, but is still reportedly keen to leave Tottenham for pastures new in January.

Dier is a particularly curious case, as reports in the last week have suggested that European giants Bayern Munich, the new home of Spurs legend Harry Kane, are eyeing a "shock" move for the 29-year-old.

Hutton thinks Dier could join Bayern

Other claims state that the former Sporting Lisbon star would be interested in making that move (Football Insider), with Hutton thinking Dier to Bayern is a real possibility.

The former Scotland international cites Dier's ability as an astute, ball-playing centre-back for the transfer to be realistic – with Hutton suggesting his playing style would suit manager Thomas Tuchel down to the ground.

Thomas Tuchel

“If I’m totally honest, I think Tottenham will want to bring someone else in,” said Hutton on Dier to Football Insider.

“With van de Ven and Romero there, who have you got there that’s going to come in? There’s a lot of players that have been there for a number of years now and it’s not quite worked out. Dier’s been there for nine years now and you would think his Tottenham career is now over considering the last few weeks.

“Would he fancy it? Probably. You’re going to a team there where you’re probably going to win more often than not. He’d have a lot of the ball, he’s good with his feet and he can play out from the back so it’s probably something that he’ll think about.

“Ultimately I think it’s time for him to move on to something different. Obviously, Ange Postecoglou will want to bring in his own signings.”

Depsite his current form, Dier has been a faithful servant for Spurs since signing from Sporting all those years ago, with Conte calling him a "reliable" player.

"What I can tell you is that Eric has improved a lot since I arrived. We are talking about a reliable player, 100 per cent focused in every game. He is not a player who alternates with a big performance then a drop."

Jon Lewis steps away from Durham role

Jon Lewis has left Durham following a restructuring of the club’s cricket operations.Lewis, who had been head coach, joined the club as a player in 1997 and was appointed captain in 2000. As coach, he led the club to the County Championship title in 2013, the Royal London Cup in 2014 and to T20 Finals Day in 2016. He has also overseen a system that has helped produce the likes of Ben Stokes, Mark Wood, Mark Stoneman, Graham Onions, Scott Borthwick and Keaton Jennings in recent years. The restructure – managed by director of cricket, Marcus North – left no obvious role for a permanent head coach, however, and Lewis is understood to have declined the opportunity to apply for a new role. The new coaching structure will see a coach employed to run the Championship and List A side – a nine month a year role – while another coach – again in a part-time role – will run the T20 side. There will also be a batting consultant – available for around 120 days a year – and two full-time roles as bowling coach (which will be Neil Killeen) and an assistant coach or second XI coach, which will be Alan Walker. Jonathan Trott, who is recently retired as a player but appears to be in demand as a coach, has been linked to the batting consultancy position. The club insist the changes are not forced upon them by budget issues, but instead designed to modernise the system and give themselves a better chance of employing coaches who might also be involved in the BBL or similar leagues.Lewis could be forgiven for feeling a certain level of disgruntlement, though. Over the course of his tenure as coach, he has seen his playing budgetslashed by around 50% and seen his side relegated – and handicapped – following the club’s financial issues. He has had to cut his playing staff often, been unable to hold on to some of his best players (Jennings, Stoneman, Borthwick and Onions have all left) and never breathed a word of complaint about any of it.He has already been linked to a couple of vacant positions at home and abroad – Yorkshire are among those currently recruiting – and leaves the club with a strong track record and good reputation.”We wish Jon all the very best in the future and every success in his next career move,” Durham’s chief executive Tim Bostock said. “Iwould like to thank him for his hard work, dedication and outstanding commitment to Durham. Jon will always be welcome back here at Emirates Riverside.”

Liverpool have submitted bid for £1.2m-p/w star who’d make Nunez unplayable

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp succeeded in rebuilding his squad last summer after the 2022/23 campaign brought little to sing home about, with years of illustrious success halted as the midfield withered and the cohesion dissipated.

While the likes of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and James Milner have all been staples of this prosperous modern era on Merseyside, there was a clear waning in strength and the struggle to a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League confirmed a miserable end to the term.

Klopp rebuilt the midfield over the summer and the aforementioned stars have all now been shipped on, but more work is needed to return the Anfield side to its former imperiousness.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

The backline requires attention, with a left-sided defender of particular interest, while the continuing question mark over the head of Mohamed Salah's future remains despite warding off lucrative attention from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad in the summer.

Out of contract in 2025, Liverpool will need to replace the 31-year-old one day, and while it's unfathomable to even dream about, recent reports suggest that moves have been made to bring Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe to English shores.

Liverpool transfer news – Kylian Mbappe

According to Spanish outlet AS – via Paisley Gates – Liverpool have submitted an opening offer to sign Mbappe following Real Madrid's apparent fears regarding the finances involved in bringing the France international to the Spanish capital.

Further, Carlo Ancelotti's side are considering a move for Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams on a free transfer next summer, with Vinicius Junior already performing brilliantly on the left wing.

While Liverpool's chances of completing a deal are slim, not least because of the exorbitant wage demands that would come after the player departs Paris on a Bosnan in the summer, the Anfield chiefs will monitor the situation in case an opportunity does arise.

There have, however, also been recent claims from the Spanish publication regarding Real Madrid's pursuit of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, and if such a deal was to be pulled off, the road to Manchester may be opened for the Parisien phenom – a daunting thought indeed.

Kylian Mbappe's style of play

It's unlikely that Liverpool would have submitted a concrete offer for the Les Bleus sensation, but that's not to say that negotiations haven't been made in some format to establish conversation.

Mbappe is one of world football's finest players and has scored 227 goals and supplied 99 assists across 275 outings for PSG, having been praised as an "alien" by Poland international Piotr Zielinski for his incredible qualities.

As per FBref, the Frenchman ranks among the top 7% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 3% for shot-creating actions, the top 4% for progressive passes, the top 1% for progressive carries and the top 5% for successful take-ons per 90.

Thus, not only is Mbappe one of the most clinical players in world football, but he is progressive and electric in his forward-surging motions, and the impact he could have in Liverpool's squad, against Premier League opposition, is frightening.

Kylian Mbappe's extraordinary goal tally

Notions that he has yet to test his craft outside of Ligue 1 are, frankly, absurd. Mbappe has 42 goals from 65 Champions League appearances, 17th on the all-time record – at 24-years-old, he is nine goals from surpassing eighth-placed Thierry Henry's 50.

And if that isn't enough, his exploits on the global stage with Les Bleus speaks for itself. He has 12 goals from two World Cup tournaments; feasibly, he will play in two or three more of the prestigious competitions before he retires and is just five goals away from eclipsing Miroslav Klose's all-time record of 16 goals.

Chuck in the 2018 FIFA World Cup trophy, and it's clear that this incredible attacker is on a pathway to prominence as one of the most devastating players of his generation, hailed as a "generational talent" by scout Jacek Kulig.

As the table delineates, Liverpool would secure a monstrous goalscoring figure, one of the most prolific in the game, should Mbappe be brought to the city, and while he has indeed yet to ply his trade outside of his homeland domestically, there is little question of his world-class ability.

Joining Klopp's side, the rekindled optimism for silverware would be bolstered exponentially; he would augment the offensive threat and then some.

Both clinical and creative, Mbappe would be a starring figure in the Premier League and could even bring Darwin Nunez's game to new heights, with the Uruguayan talisman really growing into his skin this year.

What signing Mbappe would mean for Darwin Nunez

Liverpool signed Nunez from Benfica in an £85m club-record transfer in the summer of 2022, and while he had posted 34 goals from 41 matches with the Portuguese giants across the 2021/22 campaign, he cut a divisive figure the following year in England.

The £140k-per-week machine has been sharper since the summer, having played a central role in Liverpool's revival, scoring seven goals and supplying five assists from only nine starts so far.

Given that he ranks among the top 6% of positional peers for assists and progressive carries per 90, he could drive into the forward areas and supplement Mbappe's threat, with the £1.2m-per-week PSG jewel repaying the favour.

The fact that Nunez also does a job when shifted onto the left wing could further enhance the Anfield appeal for Mbappe, who could flourish in a new partnership of interchangeability, bamboozling defenders and forever providing new days of inflicting misery on opponents.

It's not like this is something Klopp has yet to implement across his Liverpool tenure; Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino – remarked to be unstoppable by Gary Lineker – often floated across the frontline, with the trio's deadly interplay propelling the Reds to illustrious success.

Once described as an "agent of chaos" by the Liverpool Echo's Theo Squires, Nunez really does erupt onto opposition in a cauldron of confusion, deftly weaving through the lines and combining his finishing and predatory instinct.

There's still work to be done to bring him to his apex, but with Mbappe alongside him at the front, the potential is limitless and Liverpool's new chapter under Klopp's guidance could be one of extraordinary success.

Australia make wholesale changes, bring back Siddle and Lyon for ODIs

Australia have dramatically reshaped their one-day squad for the three-match series against India with just six players retained from those that faced South Africa earlier in the season

Martyn: Like Lyon’s selection in ODI squad, not Siddle’s

Australia have dramatically reshaped their one-day squad for the three-match series against India with just six players retained from those that faced South Africa earlier in the season. This is partly due to the three main quicks – Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins – being rested with an eye on their workload, but there have also been significant changes to the batting line-up with Travis Head, Chris Lynn, D’Arcy Short and Ben McDermott all omitted.Ashton Agar has also been dropped with Nathan Lyon given a chance to compete for the spin-bowling role alongside Adam Zampa at the start of the World Cup year, while Nathan Coulter-Nile has been left out after experiencing some lower back pain. There were one-day recalls for Usman Khawaja, Peter Handscomb, Mitchell Marsh, who was dropped for the final Test against India, Peter Siddle, who played the last of his 17 ODIs in 2010 having impressed in the BBL over the last couple of seasons, alongside Western Australia pair Jason Behrendorff and Jhye Richardson.”After a disappointing period in ODI cricket, the National Selection Panel along with team coaches have reviewed our performances across this format and we’ve identified a number of key areas that we feel we need to improve in order to help put this team in the best possible position to turn this period around,” national selector Trevor Hohns said.”With this in mind and the World Cup looming, we’ve selected players we feel provide us with the flexibility to play a variety of roles at different stages of a match.”With a focus on improving our ability to post competitive totals we’ve recalled Usman Khawaja, Peter Handscomb and Mitch Marsh to the squad.”Usman is a batsman we know can put vital runs on the board at the top of the order, and Peter is not only a fine player of spin bowling, he’s also a batsman we know can hold an innings together while keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Mitch gives us another all-round option with his ability with both bat and ball.””Travis Head, D’Arcy Short and Chris Lynn have been unlucky to miss out. All three have had opportunities to cement their spots, but unfortunately, they have not been as productive as we would have liked in recent times when playing ODI cricket for Australia.”Hohns confirmed the decision to rest Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins was with a view to the two Sri Lanka Tests which follow the India ODIs. He also singled out Siddle’s “leadership qualities” and picked out Behrendorff as a like-for-like swap with Starc.”It’s wonderful to have Peter [Siddle] back in the squad for the first time since 2010. His white ball cricket has improved considerably the older he has got, and his selection is great reward for his professionalism and strong leadership qualities.”We have rewarded both Jhye and Jason as they continue to put up strong performances with the white ball. Jason provides us with a left arm option in the absence of Mitchell Starc and is very capable of taking wickets early in the innings.”Nathan [Lyon] is the best offspin bowler in the world and we’ve noted how successful teams around the world have been using a two pronged spin attack in the right conditions in white ball cricket, something we are very mindful of heading to the World Cup.”Squad Aaron Finch (capt), Jason Behrendorff, Alex Carey, Peter Handscomb, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Jhye Richardson, Peter Siddle, Billy Stanlake, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa

Celtic considering record SPFL swoop for 6 ft 2 ace who Kyogo would love

The January transfer window is fast approaching and Celtic head coach Brendan Rodgers may look to dip into the market to improve his squad.

The Northern Irish manager was brought back for a second spell at Parkhead over the summer after Ange Postecoglou left to join Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

Majority shareholder Dermot Desmond and the rest of the board backed him throughout the summer as they allowed the former Leicester City boss to make nine new signings.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

Marco Tilio, Hyeok-kyu Kwon, Hyun-jun Yang, Odin Thiago Holm, Maik Nawrocki, Paulo Bernardo, Gustaf Lagerbielke, Luis Palma, and Nat Phillips were all brought in.

However, his work in the market did not translate to success on the European stage as Celtic have been eliminated from the Champions League after five matches.

They have one draw and four losses in the group so far and will finish bottom of the table and exit all European competitions after their final game.

This suggests that there is still plenty of work to do to build a squad that can achieve success on the continent as well as in domestic action, which could be why the Hoops are now reportedly eyeing up a big signing for their side.

Celtic transfer news – Bojan Miovski

The Scottish Sun have claimed that Rodgers and Celtic are weighing up a possible swoop to sign Bojan Miovski from Scottish Premiership rivals Aberdeen.

It is stated that the Scottish giants are considering a January deal for the Dons centre-forward as they look to improve their attacking options.

However, it will not be an easy deal for the Bhoys to complete as Aberdeen are set to demand an SPFL record fee for the North Macedonia international.

The current record fee for a transfer between two Scottish teams is the £4.4m that was paid by Celtic to sign central midfielder Scott Brown from Hibernian all the way back in 2007.

It is said that the Dons value Miovski at more than that £4.4m figure, which would make any transfer a record-breaking one in Scottish football, but the report does not mention exactly how much it would take for the Hoops to secure his services ahead of the second half of the season.

Aberdeen striker Bojan Miovski.

The Premiership side are accept that the 24-year-old marksman will eventually leave their club but they are reluctant to cash in on him in January, which may be why they are set to ask for a record fee from Celtic or any other interested parties.

It remains to be seen whether or not the Glasgow giants are willing to splash out such a fee on Miovski but they are considering a bid of some kind.

Rodgers has sent scouts to watch the forward in every domestic match so far this season and has, given this report, seen enough to suggest that he would be a fantastic signing for his side.

Celtic must now push ahead and work hard to secure a deal for the Aberdeen star in January as the impressive forward could form an exciting pairing with Kyogo Furuhashi, who would surely love to play alongside him.

Kyogo's season in numbers

The current Hoops star has endured a slightly disappointing, by his standards, start to the 2023/24 campaign in front of goal for Rodgers.

Kyogo has scored six goals in 16 Scottish Premiership appearances to go along with two goals in five Champions League matches, with 19 of those outings coming from the start.

Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi.

He has also missed eight 'big chances' in front of goal in that time, which shows that his teammates have created plenty of opportunities for him at the top end of the pitch.

This means that the Japan international has averaged a goal every 2.38 starts across the top-flight and European competition so far this season.

Last season, Kyogo plundered a sensational 27 goals in 31 Premiership starts and zero goals in five Champions League starts for the Hoops.

Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi.

He, therefore, averaged a strike every 1.33 starts across the two competitions, albeit they all came in domestic action, and that was a significantly better return than what the 28-year-old eight is currently managing.

These statistics show that the former Vissel Kobe marksman's form has almost fallen off a cliff this season in terms of his scoring rate, which is why signing another proven Premiership goalscorer could be a smart move by the club.

Bringing in Miovski would provide Rodgers with another excellent number nine option and it could take some of the pressure, mentally and from opposition defenders, away from Kyogo and free him up to return to his best, which is why the Japanese ace could love him.

The statistics that show why Miovski could be a good signing for Celtic

The 6 foot 2 Aberdeen star has been an impressive signing for the Scottish side since his move to the club at the start of the 2022/23 campaign.

He caught the eye with 18 goals and three assists in 42 appearances for Barry Robson's side in all competitions last season, which included 16 goals in 37 Premiership outings.

Miovski has started the current term with a return of five goals in 14 top-flight starts along with six goals and two assists in eight starts across the domestic and European cup competitions.

The 24-year-old whiz has produced four goals and two assists in Europa League qualifiers and Europa League group stage matches combined, alongside two goals in three League Cup games.

This means that the North Macedonia international has scored one goal every two starts on average in all competitions for Aberdeen this season.

Miovski, who Robson hailed as a "brilliant boy" earlier this term, has proven himself to be an impressive scorer in Scottish football, and on the European scene, and that is why he could be an excellent signing for Celtic.

The left-footed finisher could play up alongside Kyogo and offer a physical presence, given his two aerial battles won per game in the league this season in comparison to the 5 foot 7 gem's 0.2, to make him a perfect foil for the Japan international.

Celtic could sign the Aberdeen star to provide defenders with a nuisance who can put himself about to cause them problems whilst also being able to provide a goal threat, which could take the pressure of the Hoops number eight and allow him to return to his best.

Kyogo could then play as a second striker, number ten, or out wide as a winger with the license to drift inside so that he can do his damage whilst leaving the dirty work in the number nine position to Miovski.
