Yes Sir, I Can Boogie

The 1977 disco hit Yes Sir, I Can Boogie became a Scottish football anthem in the lead-up to Euro 2020, when the team qualified for the tournament.

Naturally, the full song is played, but it is the chorus that is mostly heard around the grounds before and after Scotland games.

AdvertisementNo Scotland, No Party

Nick Morgan's catchy number 'No Scotland, No Party' became the unofficial anthem of Scotland in the lead-up to Euro 2024.

With lyrics that recall past failures and the inability to progress past the groups of a major tournament, it sounds an optimistic note while paying tribute to John McGinn and Andy Robertson.

Scott McTominay

Scotland fans adore Scott McTominay not just because of his exploits on the pitch, but because he also rejected the chance to play for their neighbouring rivals, England. Sung to the tune of 'I'll Stand By You' by The Pretenders, the fans profess their love for the midfielder.

Crystal Palace could level up Olise with late January signing

January has been a busy month behind the scenes for Crystal Palace, with the recruitment team working hard to bring at least one new face to Selhurst Park.

However, on the field, the Palace faithful are becoming increasingly frustrated by Roy Hodgson's style of play and approach.

Nevertheless, the boss is keen to sign a new defender who will help bolster the attack and bring excitement back to the Eagles.

Crystal Palace want a new right back

Journalist Ed Aarons of The Guardian reported earlier in the week, via CPFCtransfersHQ on X, Palace have submitted a bid for Daniel Munoz, which sadly has been rejected by his side, Genk.

However, it is reported that the Eagles' are set to increase their offer for the £9m right back.

A move this window is realistic, and recent reports from Colombia have suggested that personal terms have been agreed.

With the January transfer window coming towards its conclusion, FFC has all the info for tracking your club’s winter transfer activity.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024 How Munoz would fit into the Palace team

Michael Olise has been Palace's most dangerous player this campaign, despite rarely playing due to a couple of injuries that have impacted his season.

Even though the French winger has started just seven Premier League games, he has netted five goals and provided one assist, with his performances often determining the result for his side.

Unfortunately for the 22-year-old, he is often isolated on the right wing due to Palace's tactics and the lack of attacking support provided by Joel Ward and Nathaniel Clyne, who rank in the bottom 13 and 22 percentile, respectively, for touches in the attacking third, as per FBref.

The star who could fix that issue and elevate Olise to an entirely new level is Munoz, who has "plenty of goals in him," according to South American expert Tim Vickery via Sky Sports.

Nonetheless, let's take a closer look at the flying Colombian full-back via statistics from the last year across the leagues most similar to the Belgian Pro League.

As you can see, Munoz is a total attack-minded full-back who pretty much does everything on the field. The 27-year-old is a huge goal threat, as displayed by his shots and goals statistics, which would allow Olise's creativity to flourish, as the duo would inevitably combine to cause chaos down the right.

The Colombian also ranks in the top 1% of positionally similar players for progressive passes and the top 6% for passes into the final third, which means his first instinct is to look up and progress play, ultimately giving Olise much more of the ball to work his magic with.

The Genk star also loves to carry the ball forward, and his high touches in the attacking third prove that he loves to support the winger.

Michael-Olise

This means that Olise will be able to find much more space where he can either find a deft pass or have a strike at goal. Munoz's overlapping runs would help with the latter in particular, providing the France gem with the opportunity to cut inside onto his stronger left foot much more often.

In short, Palace must do all they can to acquire Munoz's signature as his impact on the side could be monumental.

Missing AB de Villiers and Eoin Morgan, Middlesex unable to post challenging score at Hove

Sussex Sharks strengthened their grip on the South Group in the Vitality Blast after easing to a four-wicket wicket win over Middlesex. A sold-out 6000 crowd at Hove saw third-placed Middlesex recover from 40 for 5 to 127 for 6 with Ollie Robinson taking 4 for 13. Despite losing two wickets in the power-play Sussex sealed their victory with 22 balls to spare. It was their sixth win in eight games with one match washed out and the other tied and means they have opened up a two-point lead at the top of the South Group.Australian Alex Carey, who was dropped at third man by Tom Helm off Steven Finn on 20, top-scored with 32 while skipper Luke Wright and David Wiese both made 26 with Wiese smashing two leg-side sixes, one of which cleared the main scoreboard, off Finn. Delray Rawlins cleared the ropes off Helm to win the game.Middlesex were without Eoin Morgan, who has a sore back, and AB de Villiers, who has returned to South Africa after his spell at the club and they never really recovered after a terrible Powerplay which ended with them reeling on 28 for 4.Rawlins held a well-judged catch on the midwicket boundary to remove Paul Stirling in Chris Jordan’s first over before Robinson, benefitting from some seam movement on a sticky pitch, picked up three wickets including two in his third over on his way to career-best figures of 4 for 15. Dan Lincoln played on for a duck, Dawid Malan inside-edged to wicketkeeper Carey and John Simpson was caught at short fine-leg after gloving Robinson’s short ball.Steve Eskinazi and George Scott took the score to 40 when Scott was leg before playing across the line in the ninth over to give Danny Briggs, who conceded just 16 runs in his four overs, a deserved wicket.Middlesex were in danger of being bowled out but Eskinazi and Toby Roland-Jones, who was dropped on 7 and 9, consolidated before pushing the accelerator in the final five overs as they added 76 off 57 balls with Eskinazi lodging his fifth T20 half-century.Roland-Jones supported him well with 40 off 34 balls including two fours and two sixes before Robinson yorked him in the penultimate over to claim his fourth wicket. Eskinazi finished on 57 not out from 48 balls with six boundaries. The visitors needed early wickets and soon had Sussex 15 for 2. Phil Salt was superbly caught on the run by Nathan Sowter at deep midwicket and Laurie Evans edged Mujeeb Ur Rahman to slip. Wright looked in good order until he mis-timed a drive and was taken at mid-off but Middlesex simply didn’t have enough runs to defend.

Everton receive Chelsea’s Amadou Onana bid as talks begin over summer deal

A "tireless" Everton player will leave Goodison Park this summer, claims a report in his homeland, with a huge club apparently already starting the bidding for his services.

Everton set for summer sales amid FFP crisis

The Blues' struggles this season have been well-documented, with a 10-point deduction in the Premier League proving costly and leaving them languishing in the relegation zone.

There is now a genuine threat of Everton heading to the Championship for the first time, having survived late in the day in the past two seasons, and that would likely lead to an exodus at Goodison, due to their need to align with the league's Profit and Sustainability guidelines.

Jarrad Branthwaite has been a hugely impressive performer throughout the 2023/24 campaign, and he is being eyed up by Manchester United, who reportedly see him as a strong option to bolster their back-line for years to come.

Midfielder Amadou Onana is also a player Everton would find it extremely difficult to keep hold of, and a recent report has claimed that Newcastle United are in pole position to seal a big-money move for him.

There are others who could depart in the summer, too, with England's No.1 Jordan Pickford not wanting to be in the second tier, and the same applying to the likes of Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Chelsea in talks to sign Amadou Onana

According to Voetbalkrant, Chelsea have entered negotiations for Everton star Onana ahead of a summer move to the club, with Kevin Thelwell and Co already receiving the first bid, which is thought to be below the asking price.

The Merseysiders will demand a fee of €60m (£51m) for the 22-year-old's signature, and the report also states that one bid has already been rejected, Onana "will" leave Merseyside this year. Even if Everton do retain their place in the Premier League then, there does seem to be an inevitability about Onana moving on for a new challenge in the summer transfer window.

The Belgian has impressed this season, doing his best to keep the Blues away from danger and winning an average of 2.5 tackles and 2.1 aerial duels per game in the league, with his presence in the middle of the park often standing out.

In truth, it would be hard to begrudge Onana a move to one of the world's biggest clubs, should they meet Everton's price tag – their financial situation means it could benefit them in the long run – and given his age, it is easy to envisage him growing into an even more formidable player over time.

Of course, the idea of him staying at Goodison is an exciting one – Alan Shearer has hailed him as "tireless" – but it feels far more likely that the Blues will cash in on him, at which point they must nail a replacement or two.

Winning back vice-captaincy was logical next step for Ben Stokes, Ashley Giles says

Managing director of England men’s cricket believes added responsibility will help all-rounder’s rise

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Jul-2019Ashley Giles believes Ben Stokes’ reinstatement as England vice-captain ahead of the Ashes is the logical next step in his development as a Test allrounder. In announcing their 14-man squad for the first Test against Australia starting at Edgbaston August 1, the ECB also revealed chairman Colin Graves had approved Stokes’ re-appointment on the recommendation of Ashley Giles and chief executive Tom Harrison.Stokes had been stripped of the role during investigations into the fight outside a Bristol night club in 2017, over which he was ultimately found not guilty of affray. Stokes subsequently faced an ECB disciplinary hearing, which resulted in him being fined and banned for eight international matches in December 2018, a punishment that he had already served in missing five months of cricket, including the 2017-18 Ashes.Giles, the managing director of England men’s cricket, said Stokes was highly respected within the team environment.”He is a natural leader and has a great understanding of the game,” Giles said. “He will offer tremendous support to Joe Root as part of the senior playing group.”Over the past 18 months, he has come a long way and has shown a great degree of maturity on and off the field.”I have no doubts that the added responsibility will also help him to continue his rise as a world class all-rounder in the Test arena.”Stokes will take over the vice-captaincy from Jos Buttler.Stokes scored in the 70s and 80s four times in his last five innings at the World Cup and was Player of the Match in the final at Lord’s after guiding England’s run-chase with an unbeaten 84 from 98 balls, as well as adding a crucial 8 from 3 in the decisive Super Over.Jofra Archer, who is in line to make his Test debut after also being named in England’s Ashes squad, credited Stokes with offering some calming words when he was chosen to bowl to New Zealand in their Super Over, with Stokes having been through a similar experience – although with a different outcome – when charged with bowling the final over of the 2016 T20 World Cup final against West Indies in Kolkata.”If we had lost today, I don’t know what I would have done tomorrow,” Archer said at the time. “But Ben Stokes told me even before the over: ‘Win or lose, today does not define you. Everyone believes in you.’ He came to talk to me because of Kolkata. He probably went through the same emotions but was on the losing side.”

Leeds must rue selling their homegrown talent who’s now better than Firpo

Leeds United are a frightening prospect to come up against in the Championship at the moment, seven wins on the bounce for Daniel Farke's self-assured Whites in the second tier seeing them shoot up to second in the division at the expense of Southampton.

Barely having to break a sweat last match to dispatch of Swansea City 4-0, Leeds will just want the victories to keep flowing on their travels down to Devon this Saturday against Plymouth Argyle.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

Yet, the confident Whites could be even stronger currently if they'd just held on to this exciting left-back instead of binning him off in 2022.

Leif Davis' time at Leeds United

Nobody could have quite predicted what Leif Davis would go on to achieve with Ipswich Town when looking back at his humble beginnings in West Yorkshire, the now explosive 24-year-old unremarkable playing for Leeds after stepping up from the academy into the first-team mix.

The current Tractor Boys number three would only manage to pick up a solitary assist from 14 first-team appearances at Elland Road, before being chucked out to AFC Bournemouth on loan during the 2021/22 season.

After this loan switch to the Cherries – which saw Davis register similar forgettable numbers to his time in the senior fold with Leeds at one assist from 15 appearances – Leeds would cut ties with the dynamic defender which has proven to be a foolish move in retrospect.

Victor Orta wouldn't let Davis go for cheap however at the time, managing to at least get a respectable £1m to allow the 6-foot full-back to exit West Yorkshire.

Now, with Davis' transfer value coming in at a far greater €4.6m (£3.9m) according to Football Transfers, this is a deal Leeds will regret signing off on regardless of any money entering their bank.

Despite Junior Firpo coming into his own with four assists in a much-improved 2024 for the second-tier side, Davis could well have been an even more impactful assist king for Farke's men this season over the former Barcelona man.

What Leif Davis has achieved at Ipswich

Davis has become a man-possessed since making the switch to Suffolk, a crucial cog in Kieran McKenna's machine at Portman Road when it comes to Ipswich devastating teams with their full-throttle attacking play.

Since leaving Leeds behind, Davis has notched up 31 goals and assists combined with 30 of those coming at Ipswich across two unbelievable seasons for the 24-year-old.

Described as an "animal" by former Bournemouth manager Scott Parker despite never really showing his full potential on the South Coast, Davis is now living up to Parker's words with 13 assists managed this season in the second tier from just 28 games.

In stark contrast, Firpo – over his entire career to date – has only accumulated 16 assists with Davis only three off that total unbelievably in just one season.

With Leeds having troubles in the left-back spot this season owing to injury issues amongst many other dilemmas, it does feel like a case of what could have been if the promotion-chasing Whites had stuck by Davis instead of offloading him.

Leeds could well still have the final long-standing triumph over Davis at Ipswich this season regardless, however, as Farke and Co eye up consolidating an automatic promotion spot whilst Ipswich linger below in fourth.

Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool all want to sign "wonderful" Sunderland gem

One exciting Sunderland youngster could leave the Stadium of Light in a cut-price deal with a number of clubs circling for his services.

Sunderland’s January transfer window

The Black Cats and Michael Beale were fairly busy in the winter market, with the club continuing the trend of signing players aged 23 or under. Winger Romaine Mundle and defender Leo Hjelde joined on permanent deals from Standard Liege and Leeds United, whereas versatile midfielder Callum Styles joined on loan from Barnsley.

There were also a number of Sunderland players who left the club at the beginning of 2024.

Attention is now on the remainder of the Championship season as Beale looks to take his side into the playoffs, but off the pitch over the coming months, Sunderland could be in danger of losing an in-demand talent.

Update on future of Chris Rigg

The Sunderland Echo shared a transfer update on Rigg in the last 48 hours, and when it came to whether there was interest, said: “This isn't what Sunderland fans will want to hear, but yes there is… and from just about every major club in Europe too. The Echo understands that Bayern Munich are keen as are Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool.”

The report then adds: “Rigg is not yet eligible to sign professional terms and could, technically, move to another club if a fee was agreed between the two clubs. Sunderland would be compensated via a tribunal if Rigg was to leave at the end of his scholarship deal and move elsewhere.”

Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg.

Rigg, who has played as a central and defensive midfielder this season for the Black Cats, has featured on seven occasions in the Championship this season.

In total, the 16-year-old has made 11 senior appearances for the club and has earned plenty of praise after coming through Sunderland’s academy. For example, former manager Tony Mowbray labelled Rigg as a youngster with “wonderful qualities” back in the summer.

“Chris Rigg is pushing really hard for a starting place in our team I would suggest, and I don’t say that lightly, he’s a 16-year-old boy. He knows where the goal is and wants to run forward, he’s got energy to burn and can keep running all day.

“He looks you in the eye and wants to please and do what you want him to do. He should have scored again to be honest, if he’d trusted his right foot he would have scored again.

"Rigg is doing really well and is a real positive for our football club. I’m eulogising about him there, we shouldn’t overly build him up. He’s still a young boy but he has wonderful qualities and wonderful attributes.”

However, it looks as if some of the biggest clubs in Europe are keen on his services, which isn’t exactly ideal news for Black Cats supporters, making this one to keep an eye on ahead of the summer.

Sarah Taylor withdraws from England's T20 Ashes squad

Sarah Taylor has decided to withdraw from the T20 leg of England Women’s Ashes campaign, as part of the ongoing management of her longstanding anxiety issues. With the series already out of England’s reach following their 3-0 defeat in the ODI series and last week’s drawn Test in Taunton, it has been decided that Taylor would benefit from the break, with Fran Wilson coming into the squad to replace her.Taylor and the ECB staff have been working together over the last three years to manage her mental health, ever since she took an extended break from the game in 2016, before returning to play a key part in England’s World Cup victory the following year. She also missed the last World T20 in the Caribbean in November, where England were beaten by Australia in the final.”I first took a break from the game in 2016 but I don’t want people to feel this is exactly the same,” Taylor said. “I’ve made progress in that time and there are plenty of challenges I’ve met on the way and hurdles I’ve overcome.”That said, mental health is not something you ‘beat’. It’s a continual management process and at the moment I don’t feel in a good enough place to compete in international sport.”The T20 leg of the Ashes begins in Chelmsford this evening, where England’s aim is the same as it was on their last Ashes tour of Australia – to tie the points series at 8-8, even though Australia retain the title as holders.”I wish the girls all the best across the IT20 series. 8-8 is a very different score from 8-2 and I know they’re all working incredibly hard to win these last three matches and draw the series.”
