Dodds could ditch Ba by unleashing Sunderland gem who’s “like Jack Clarke”

Sunderland will hope their current turbulent season in the Championship is just a bump in the road on the way to a sustained promotion push happening next campaign.

Mike Dodds' men find themselves occupying a disappointing 13th spot in the second-tier standings with just three games left to play, not involved in any of the drama near the top of the division whilst being stuck in the middle.

Young gems such as Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham – who have both starred in patches this season – will have matured even more by the time a ball is kicked to start next campaign, with the future bright on Wearside when looking at the number of top youngsters coming through.

This emerging talent at the Stadium of Light could well grow to become the best of the bunch if given time, with his style of play already being likened to Jack Clarke's skill set.

Sunderland winger Jack Clarke.

The next Jack Clarke

17-year-old Tom Watson won't be fazed just yet by the outlandish praise fielded his way by football journalist Josh Bunting, who described the up-and-coming left winger as "like Jack Clarke" in terms of his directness marauding forward for the U21s.

Watson is also playing like a goal machine for the U21s like the former Tottenham Hotspur man is for the first-team, bagging in his last two Premier League 2 appearances to take his goal total for the season in the youth ranks to eight strikes from 14 games.

Managing 23 goals from 57 appearances overall now, Watson will be itching for a first-team opportunity very soon and it wouldn't be out of the ordinary if Dodds opts to throw the teenage sensation into the deep end based on his team selections as interim boss.

Rigg, who is one year younger than the 17-year-old starlet, has accumulated 18 Championship appearances this season whilst Bellingham – who is just one year older – has managed to fire in seven strikes in the league even during such an up-and-down campaign for his side.

Throwing Watson into the first-team mix for Sunderland's final Championship games could mean Abdoullah Ba is pushed down the pecking order to accommodate, with the 20-year-old attacker notably lacklustre when his team has struggled this season.

Why Abdoullah Ba could be replaced by Watson

Ba could be sweating about his immediate future on Wearside if Watson is bumped up to the senior ranks and thrives, meaning his position as back-up to Clarke is filled by someone fresher and more exciting.

The Frenchman has been largely below-par this season for the Black Cats, shockingly winning just two of his 14 duels in Sunderland's 4-2 collapse at St. Mary's last month amongst other dire displays.

Dan Neil and Abdoullah Ba of Sunderland.

Ba did put in a competent performance during Sunderland's 2-0 win over Cardiff City to end March – with the 20-year-old winger finishing with a 100% successful dribble completion rate – but the out-of-favour youngster hasn't been in the first-team since and has found himself mainly rooted to the substitutes bench.

The time might be right, therefore, for a different youngster to move into the spotlight over the inconsistent 20-year-old in the form of Watson.

With Sunderland not playing for anything anymore whilst the season winds down, and Ba finding himself on the sidelines as a fringe figure, Watson could perfectly slot into the senior fold in the coming weeks to test if he's made of stern stuff and whether he can live up to his Clarke comparisons.

SL look to embrace 'role definitions'; WI eye improvement in bowling

As Sri Lanka and the West Indies prepare to square off in the first of three ODIs on Saturday – which will be followed by two T20Is next month – the series offers the chance for both sides to benchmark themselves as they work towards the T20 World Cup later this year. For the West Indies, it’s an opportunity to see if they can build on their impressive showing in India in December, when they went toe to toe with arguably the top limited-overs team in the world. Eventually, they came away on the wrong end of narrow 2-1 series defeats in both the ODIs and T20Is.For Sri Lanka, after a chastening T20I series loss in India and an underwhelming Test series win over Zimbabwe to start the year, this series offers them a chance at testing themselves against a quality opposition but aided by familiar home comforts.”We’ve got some realistic goals that we want to achieve over the next couple of years, and this is the start for us,” Sri Lanka head coach Mickey Arthur said at a media briefing in Colombo on Wednesday, ahead of the start of the series.Arthur, who will be taking the reins of the ODI side for the first time since being hired as national coach, said he was particularly keen to see how his players adapted to the newly allocated roles given to them. But more than that, he was hopeful that good results over the coming weeks had the potential to give his players some much-needed belief in the process put in place.”We’re very realistic about where we’re at at the moment but we have some very good goals that we want to achieve over the next couple of years,” he said.”We just want to keep getting better and better. Everybody has certainly been given very clear role definitions, so to see how the guys embrace those role definitions is going to be very, very interesting.”Also we need to establish what’s going to be our best brand of cricket and how we’re going to go about that, and hope that we can get some results which will give the confidence in the brand of cricket we want to play over the next couple of years. Because ultimately that gives you sustainable success, and that’s what we’re all in the game for.”As for West Indies head coach Phil Simmons, the tour is more about looking to carry on the progress that was so evident against India.”For the last three months we’ve been trying to build both our white-ball teams,” Simmons said. “We’re looking at improving. And [at the end of this tour] if we’ve gotten better than we were in India then we could be walking away with the series.”One of the main areas for improvement the team has been eyeing since that India tour has been in their bowling. While the West Indies batsmen have never been short of confidence, Simmons felt it was in the bowling department that impactful gains could be made.”I think during the series we played well, but we just had to improve our bowling. We’ve been working hard on that, in terms of getting more wickets in the middle overs and things like that. I think we’ve improved and we’ll see what happens in this series.”The first ODI takes place in Colombo on February 22.

Arteta must immediately bench Arsenal star who dropped a 4/10 v Bayern

It has been a tough week for Arsenal Football Club in their hunt for major silverware under Mikel Arteta, and they were dealt two major blows to Premier League and in particular, Champions League hopes.

The Gunners lost 2-0 at home to Aston Villa last Sunday, with a defeat leaving them reeling in second place, two points behind Manchester City. However, with six games still to go, they are not out of the title race by any stretch of the imagination.

On Wednesday, however, Arsenal were eliminated from the Champions League by German side Bayern Munich. Thomas Tuchel’s men overcame Arsenal 1-0 at the Allianz Arena, winning 3-2 on aggregate and sending Arteta’s side home to set up a heavyweight semi-final clash against Real Madrid. It was a devastating result for Arsenal, who will now have full focus on trying to catch Pep Guardiola’s City side in the Premier League.

Arteta will have to ensure his side can climb this stumbling block and rectify the result against Wolves on Saturday. It could well be the case that the Spaniard tinkers with his team ahead of their trip to Molineux, following some disappointing performances in Germany, particularly from one of his star wingers.

Gabriel Martinelli's stats vs Bayern Munich

It was certainly a disappointing performance from Brazilian winger Gabriel Martinelli on Wednesday. He had a big chance in the first half to make it 1-0 to Arsenal, which could have swung the tie, but his effort was saved by Manuel Neuer.

However, crucially, Martinelli let Bayern goalscorer Joshua Kimmich peel away from him and score an unchallenged header which won Tuchel’s men the game. It was a frustrating error from the wide man and one that ultimately cost Arsenal their place in Europe.

Off the ball, Martinelli struggled, winning just three out of his ten ground duels, according to Sofaccore. Frustratingly, he didn’t touch the ball near enough to have a major impact on the game, which was not his fault, but rather a lack of supply from teammates.

Indeed, only Kai Havertz (26 touches) of any starter on the away side had fewer touches than Martinelli's 32. However, he did look after the ball well, completing 100% of his 13 passes.

Martinelli’s error was enough to warrant a 4/10 past match rating, from Goal.com’s Charles Watts. Whilst he did acknowledge Martinelli “worked so hard all night”, the 22-year-old’s mistake for the goal earned him a disappointing overall rating.

The best replacements for Martinelli

In truth, it has been a frustrating season for Brazil international Martinelli, who has only scored eight goals and registered five assists in 38 games in all competitions so far this season. If Arteta does decide to rotate his side and give another player a chance out wide on Saturday, he isn’t short of options in the squad.

The most likely option Arteta could turn to is Leandro Trossard, who has been impressive so far in 2023/24. The Belgian has scored 13 goals and has two assists this season, but has only played 1,830 minutes, the equivalent of 20 full 90s.

In dropping Martinelli, Arteta could perhaps be worried about losing a threat in one-vs-one scenarios. However, Trossard’s take-on numbers stack up well against Martinelli. The 29-year-old has a take-on success rate of 53.8% per 90 minutes in the Premier League, placing him in the top 14% of positionally similar players, as per Fbref. In comparison, the club's no.11 has a take-on success rate of just 34.3% per 90 minutes, placing him in the 17th percentile, according to Fbref, a stark difference.

Trossard may also offer a better option off the ball, too. In the league this season, he ranks in the top 20% for ball recoveries per 90 minutes, with 5.08. In contrast, Martinelli places in the 38th percentile, making 4.08 ball recoveries per 90 minutes. Against an energetic Wolves side, the Belgian could well prove to be the better option for Arteta out of possession.

Arteta’s other options include Reiss Nelson, whose fleeting appearances this season have yielded just one goal and two assists, none coming in the Premier League. The Gunners boss could also start Emile Smith Rowe, who has registered two Premier League assists this term, including one in a superb performance against Luton recently.

Certainly, Arteta has options should he wish to change things up on the left-hand side. Trossard seems the most apt replacement for Martinelli, and could well get a start at Molineux on Saturday night after a good season so far.

Man Utd now hold talks over signing £12k-p/w defender who Ratcliffe knows

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co have seemingly identified Manchester United's first summer signing, with internal talks being held over a move to Old Trafford at the end of the season.

Ten Hag's defensive woes continue

It has been another season to forget at the Theatre of Dreams this season. Currently sixth in the Premier League, they were lucky to escape with a point against Brentford after conceding over 30 shots in their last outing and look certain to miss out on Champions League football next season.

They also finished bottom of their Champions League group, and have turned in several dreadful performances under Erik ten Hag.

However, they are in the semi-final of the FA Cup, where they will face one of Manchester City or Chelsea in the final provided they make it past Coventry City. A big issue for the Red Devils has been their backline. Tyrell Malacia hasn't featured this season, while Luke Shaw has only appeared 12 times in the Premier League.

Lisandro Martinez has also spent a significant period of the season on the sidelines, and on Monday it was revealed that both he and Victor Lindelof are expected to miss the next month after picking up injuries against the Bees.

It means that as it stands, of Ten Hag's available defenders, only Diogo Dalot has managed to play more than 50% of the Premier League minutes available this season, and much of that has been at left-back.

Clearly then, defence has to be a priority this summer, and there are already reports of United targeting a centre-back before the new season, but they are also looking at the fullback spots.

Club in talks with Bard

Now, reliable journalist Nizaar Kinsella has revealed that the Red Devils are holding internal talks over OGC Nice left-back Melvin Bard. On the cusp of the French national team, Bard has enjoyed an impressive season with the Ligue 1 outfit, starting 25 times in the French top flight and helping Nice challenge for a spot in next season's Champions League.

Soccer Football – Ligue 1 – OGC Nice v RC Strasbourg – Allianz Riviera, Nice, France – December 5, 2021 RC Strasbourg’s Ludovic Ajorque in action with OGC Nice’s Melvin Bard REUTERS/Eric Gaillard

Kinsella says that Manchester United are making the left-back spot a "priority" in their transfer plans, after initially planning to sign a right back, and that Bard is one of the options that is being given the most consideration, with the OId Trafford outfit 'in talks' over a move for the defender.

It is unclear how much the 23-year-old would set the Red Devils back, with Bard still having two years left to run on his Nice contract and contact 'expected over a new, improved deal in the coming months'. The defender is valued at £10m by transfermarkt.

On just £12,000 per week, his salary is unlikely to be a problem for United should they pursue a deal for the Frenchman, and given that Ratcliffe also owns Nice, it is unlikely that a move would have too much difficulty in being completed should they firm up their interest.

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Feb-2020Allrounder Chamu Chibhabha, who last played white-ball cricket for Zimbabwe in 2018, has been named captain of both the ODI and T20I sides for the ongoing Bangladesh tour. Williams had led Zimbabwe in their most-recent white-ball game in Singapore in October 2019. In January earlier this year, though, Chibhabha had been appointed limited-overs captain on an “interim basis”. Chibhabha was in fine form in the Pro 50 Championship in 2019, where he was Mashonaland Eagles’ top scorer, with 165 runs in five innings at an average of 33.ALSO READ: Afif Hossain and Mohammad Naim break into Bangladesh ODI squadNineteen-year-old allrounder Wesley Madhevere has made a swift step-up from Under-19 cricket, earning his maiden call-up to the senior side. Carl Mumba, who last played ODI cricket in 2017, is back in the limited-overs mix. The 24-year-old, however, is uncapped in T20I cricket. The vastly experienced Chris Mpofu rounds off the seam attack.Meanwhile, Tinashe Kamunhukamwe and Ainsley Ndlovu are the frontline spinners in the squad. Liverpool must unleash "special" 5/10 star alongside Jota

Liverpool were a day late and a dollar short against Atalanta in the Europa League on Thursday night but can ill-afford to brood over the chastening Anfield defeat, with Crystal Palace travelling to Merseyside for a Premier League showdown this afternoon.

While Liverpool have been restored as title contenders this season following sweeping summer changes to right the lofty wrongs of the 2022/23 campaign, a never-say-die, tenacious attitude has superimposed over residual defensive fragilities.

The Reds have kept just five clean sheets across 22 matches in all competitions in 2024 and have been undone in recent fixtures against Atalanta and Manchester United after inexcusable lapses and mistakes.

Ibrahima Konate after Atalanta defeat

This error-strewn streak must now reach its end, lest Liverpool's thrilling finale to the Jurgen Klopp era peter out with bitter disappointment.

Crystal Palace, sitting in 15th place in the league, have not beaten Klopp's Liverpool in 13 attempts but will be eager to capitalise on complacency, especially with several first-team host members still unavailable.

Liverpool team news

Diogo Jota, at least, is in line for a start after returning from the bench against Atalanta on Thursday. The clinical Portugal forward had been sidelined for 12 games after injuring his knee against Brentford in February.

And while Trent Alexander-Arnold is also nearing a return from injury, he is unlikely to find his name on the starting team sheet after spending the lion's share of the calendar year recovering from an issue – though he may well be named as a substitute.

The same could be said for first-choice shot-stopper Alisson Becker, who might be involved but is likely to return to the grass next week.

Stefan Bajcetic returned to action on Friday as Liverpool defeated Manchester United in a U21 fixture, but Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip remain long-term absentees.

Liverpool must unleash Diogo Jota

An element of circumspection will be needed with Jota, but after entering the play in the late stage of the Europa League in midweek Klopp might be convinced to unleash his prolific striker.

As per FBref, Jota ranks among the top 1% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored and tackles, the top 16% for shot-creating actions, the top 5% for progressive carries and the top 3% for touches in the attacking box per 90.

Hailed as a “pressing monster” by assistant manager Pep Lijnders, the 27-year-old is one of the most potent attacking outlets in the Premier League and has scored nine goals from just 13 starting appearances in the top flight this season.

Mohamed Salah is marginally ahead of Jota in prolificness this season but he offers a very different skill set to his Egyptian counterpart and must be unleashed as the central focal point against Palace, sending Darwin Nunez to the bench.

Nunez, while influential and improved this season, has ebbed back toward the wasteful, wayward shooting of the 2022/23 campaign, his first in Liverpool after signing from Benfica in a club-record £85m deal, and has missed a catalogue of recent chances that may well have changed the current narrative quite drastically.

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota.

The Uruguayan actually has the worst conversion rate of any player to have been presented with 20+ chances in 2023/24 – as per WhoScored – and Jota could provide the Midas touch needed to steer the season back on course against Palace.

Fitness withstanding, Jota is a crucial inclusion at Anfield, with Harvey Elliott also demanding a return to the outset in the Premier League.

Harvey Elliott's season in numbers

Elliott has only just turned 21 but the versatile midfielder is truly one of the finest prospects around, having been a creative option for Liverpool throughout the course of the campaign and compensating for the host of injuries that had threatened Klopp's team in recent months.

Praised for his "special talent" by The Athletic's James Pearce, Elliott has scored three goals and supplied seven assists for his club this term but has only started six Premier League matches, though he may well be in line for a start today.

Harvey Elliott for Liverpool

In the Premier League, as per Sofascore, the England U21 star has completed 88% of his passes, though his displays in the Europa League, where he has played with the greatest frequency, probably serve as a better gauge of his level.

Across nine fixtures on the continent, Elliott has racked up four assists, completed 85% of his passes, averaged 1.6 key passes, 1.4 tackles and 4.1 ball recoveries per game while succeeding with 71% of his dribbles.

Klopp noted that Wataru Endo looked fatigued against Atalanta so it's likely that Alexis Mac Allister will shift into a deeper-lying central role, opening space for Elliott to move into his favoured midfield role after playing on the wing on Thursday, hitting the bar twice but receiving only a 5/10 match rating from the Liverpool Echo's Ian Doyle as he struggled to make an impact.

Liverpool have been rinsed of £63m by a flop who earns more than Diaz

This is surely one of the biggest and most costly misfires under Klopp’s leadership.

ByAngus Sinclair Apr 13, 2024

Still, this is hardly his fault and he was one of the better performers on an abject evening, albeit subbed off for Salah at halftime.

Why Liverpool must unleash Harvey Elliott

Rested and raring to go, Elliott is stylistically similar to Dominik Szoboszlai – according to FBref's Player Comparison model – and given the Hungarian's recent struggles Elliott must indeed be handed a starting berth.

The £40k-per-week ace ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 3% for shot-creating actions, the top 4% for progressive passes and the top 3% for successful take-ons per 90.

Moreover, he's developing a sharp goalscoring sense that Palace keenly felt in the reverse fixture back in December, having performed so well to rebuff Klopp's squad only for substitute Elliott to fire an awesome effort into the back of the net in the dying embers.

He's rarely unleashed from the opening in the Premier League but Elliott is growing into quite the midfielder and he could make a marked impact on Liverpool's fight for three points this afternoon, providing his frontal teammates with creative support, adding a dimension to the centre of the park at a time of great importance for Liverpool's campaign.

£8,500-a-week Rangers transfer target now set to be sold at huge discount

With the transfer window fast-approaching amid the end of a dramatic Scottish Premiership season, Rangers have reportedly been handed a boost in pusuit of one of Philippe Clement's summer targets.

Rangers transfer news

As things stand, Rangers are set to miss out on the Scottish Premiership title, with Celtic in the clear and on course to keep hold of their crown, but that failure should spark them into transfer action. Clement's first summer in charge is set to result in a number of changes too, with several contracts coming to an end at the end of the season.

Among those set to leave is Leon Balogun, Ryan Jack, Borna Barisic and in the most frustrating of all for those at Ibrox, John Lundstram. The Scottish giants had attempted to keep hold of their midfielder, but it now seems as though he is destined to depart as a free agent this summer. What Lundsrtram's exit will do, however, is free up room for further reinforcements, which could see players arrive in permanent deals.

Rangers midfielder John Lundstram.

Reports have already eyed Fabio Silva for a permanent switch from Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer, and it now looks as though Abdallah Sima could follow suit. Reportedly in pole position to sign the winger, the Gers have now been handed a further boost.

Rangers can save millions on Tavernier successor with "highly-rated" star

Rangers could place their trust in a young talent rather than spend millions on a replacement for Tavernier

ByRoss Kilvington Apr 27, 2024

According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Brighton & Hove Albion are now willing to sell Sima for just £6m this summer in a cut-price deal that should hand Rangers a major advantage. There were previously concerns over their ability to afford the Brighton man then valued at £10m-£15m, but that new price should leave them without any issues in negotiations, especially given Sima's £8.5k per-week salary.

A key part to Clement's side, signing Sima permanently should be high up on the list of Rangers' priorities this summer, especially if they want to dethrone Celtic.

"Terrific" Sima can be the difference-maker for Clement

Sima's injury may have interrupted his loan spell at Ibrox this season – missing nine consecutive Scottish Premiership games previously and again this weekend at St Mirren – but that hasn't taken away from the impact that he's made. The fact that he returned with a goal against Celtic in a dramatic 3-3 draw sums up the success that his loan spell has been. Now, he could get the chance to have a permanent impact at Ibrox in a move that would go a long way in dethroning Rangers' Old Firm rivals.

Former Brighton coach Billy Reid tipped Sima for great things in Scotland and he has delivered ever since. Reid previously said via The Scottish Sun: "He’s a player who needs to be at his top physical level to show what he’s capable of.

"He trained well and worked really hard in every session because he wants to do well. As a lad, he’s terrific. He was one of those boys who always came in with a smile on his face. He’s an infectious character and even when his English wasn’t great, he was always a big part of the dressing room. Now he’s comfortable speaking the language, I’m sure he is popular around Ibrox.”
