Sky Sports: West Ham reach agreement to sign £130k-p/w ace alongside Duran

West Ham United appear to be closing in on two new signings this summer as they look to bolster their ranks ahead of the new Premier League season, it has been revealed.

Hammers closing in on Duran deal

Widespread reports suggest that Julen Lopetegui's side are closing in on a move for Aston Villa forward Jhon Duran, though there remains a lack of clarity over just how far away a deal is to completion.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Hammers "have offered £30m plus one young player" for the striker, who managed just three Premier League starts last campaign. He adds that negotiations are "ongoing" over an agreement for the Colombian striker.

Duran meanwhile has fanned the flames by admitting he "hopes" something happens. “The fact my name is being mentioned by such big teams, it is very important for my career. I’m happy that there are these rumours & let’s hope that something concrete happens”, he explained.

And sources in his homeland have suggested that a deal is "close" and that a "verbal agreement" has been reached between the two clubs, with a £35m deal expected to be ironed out in the "near future".

Should he arrive, he would be the club's fourth signing of the summer and the second from a fellow Premier League side, with the Hammers having already raided Lopetegui's former side to sign Wolves captain Max Kilman. They've also pounced on relegated goalkeeper Wes Foderingham, while they brought in young talent Luis Guilherme from Brazilian outfit Palmeiras. And they are showing no signs of slowing down in their hunt for new faces.

West Ham agree deal for full-back

Now, it has been reported that West Ham have agreed a deal with Bayern Munich to sign right-back Noussair Mazraoui after being in talks with him last week.

As per Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, the two sides have "reached an agreement" for the Moroccan to join West Ham in a deal worth €15.5m (£13m) up front, plus a further €4m (£3m) in add-ons.

There is also understood to be a "verbal agreement in principle" between the 26-year-old, on a massive £130,000 a week at the Allianz Arena, and the Hammers, though it is added that it is "not a done deal yet" because "important financial details" need to be sorted.

Mazraoui's current salary would make him the second-highest-paid player at West Ham were it to be matched at the London Stadium.

The deal comes after it was revealed that fellow fullback target Aaron Wan-Bissaka turned down a move to the London Stadium as he holds out for a move to Serie A champions Inter.

Mazraoui brings plenty of pedigree of his own should he arrive, having lifted the German title with Bayern Munich in his first season at the club. His arrival would be yet another indication that the Hammers have lofty goals under Lopetegui this season.

Matthew Mott on starting XI in New Zealand: 'Going to be one or two very disappointed players'

Picking the final XI will be a tough task although the returning Tayla Vlaeminck won’t play every game

Andrew McGlashan17-Mar-2021Australia coach Matthew Mott knows that he will have to manage the disappointment of players who fail to make the starting XI against New Zealand later this month, with the return of Tayla Vlaeminck and Ellyse Perry further strengthening their squad.Fast bowler Vlaeminck will be carefully handled on her comeback to international cricket and will not be part of every match of the tour [of three T20Is and three ODIs]. She has not played for Australia since the tri-series before last year’s T20 World Cup, which she then missed with a stress fracture of her foot. She also sat out this season’s WBBL.Vlaeminck returned to action in the WNCL last month and picked up six wickets in four games for Victoria, including 4 for 16 against ACT.Perry is also available again, for the first since the World Cup after having missed the home series against New Zealand at the start of the season as she continued he recovery from a severe hamstring injury.Related

Australia have an eye on pace to stay ahead of the pack

It means some tough selection decisions loom when narrowing down the final XI for the T20I series, which starts on March 28 once Australia complete their two weeks of managed isolation.”There’s going to be one or two very disappointed players that deserve to be in that team, but that’s the byproduct of having success and having players who have been out of the team coming back in,” Mott said. “We aren’t exactly settled on that [final] XI. There are people at difference stages. In Tayla’s case, we won’t be looking to play her in every game over here.”She’s aware of that so we’ll have to manage her through her return to play.”Tayla Vlaeminck will continue to be carefully managed•Getty Images

Having watched a lot of cricket from the sidelines, Vlaeminck is confident about her form and fitness heading into the series. “I gradually got to expose my foot and my body to the feeling of hitting the crease, so I wasn’t going from zero to a hundred really quick,” she told RSN Radio. “Took me probably a couple of games to find my rhythm again but feel like I’m back to that now.”It was a long time between games but makes it so much more enjoyable when you get back out there.”From the last T20I Australia played, against New Zealand in late September, there is one certain absentee, with Delissa Kimmince having taken a break from the game. Allrounder Annabel Sutherland, who was part of the ODI side, was also ruled out of this tour because of a stress fracture.”Ellyse has come off some really good cricket and is a world-class player so she’ll have to get in there somewhere then it’s about managing a couple of really unlucky players who will miss out,” Mott said. The only slight fresh injury concern heading into tour was around Beth Mooney, who missed a WNCL game with a thigh strain after making 163 against Western Australia. But she is expected to be fit.”It was a smart [decision] from her, she nipped it in the bud,” Mott said of Mooney skipping the game. “Kate Beerworth, our physio, is assessing everyone today and we’ll know a bit more tomorrow but Beth seems to be moving around well.”Australia will train for the first time on Thursday in Christchurch and over the course of the next ten days, they will go through various match-based scenarios as they only leave managed isolation the day before the opening T20I in Hamilton.”That’s probably the most critical sessions we’ll have,” Mott said. “Our players have been playing a bit of cricket so we aren’t worried about it, but just that spatial awareness for batters and bowlers to get out there in the middle, it’s very different to the nets, they are craving that contest-type stuff. We’ll put players in positions they’ll likely be in during games.”

Lizelle Lee becomes top-ranked ODI batter after strong run against India

Lizelle Lee, the South Africa opening batter, has had a stellar run in the ongoing ODI series against India, and that has led to a steep rise in the women’s ODI rankings, where she is now the top batter, relegating England’s Tammy Beaumont to No. 2. Last week, after scoring 83* in the series opener, Lee had moved up from No. 11 to eighth, and since then, a run of 4, 132* and 69 has seen her zoom through even as South Africa have taken a winning 3-1 lead in the series.Lee, the only South African ever to top that table, had earlier been the best in the world in June 2018 after scoring 92* and 117 against England, though South Africa had lost that series 2-1.Though India have fallen short in three of the matches, their top-order batter Punam Raut has had a very good run, totalling 253 runs from four innings so far compared to Lee’s 288. Like Lee, she has also scored two half-centuries and a century, and that has led to a rise of eight spots to 18th. She is fourth-best Indian in the list after Smriti Mandhana (seventh), Mithali Raj (ninth) and Harmanpreet Kaur (15th).ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Among the other premier performers in the four matches so far in Lucknow, South Africa’s Lara Goodall (49 and 59* in the second and fourth games) has gained 27 places to reach the 48th position.Chasing teams have won all four games so far – South Africa won the third game on the DLS method while chasing – and that has been because of some impressive bowling performances, especially in the morning. Jhulan Goswami, with eight wickets in three games, is top of that chart, with Shabnim Ismail one behind after four games, followed by Rajeshwari Gayakwad with five wickets. That has meant a rise to No. 3, behind the Australian pair of Jess Jonassen and Megan Schutt for Ismail, while Goswami has held on to her fifth place, while Gayakwad has gained four slots to No. 18.The final game of the series will be played on Wednesday.

Ultimate Barclaysmen: Rory Delap – The human slingshot who became Stoke's cheat code with his spectacular throws

The Republic of Ireland international bamboozled opponents with his long throws that provided plenty of goals for a solid Stoke side

'The Barclays'. While the Premier League was technically sponsored by the aforementioned bank between 2001-16, the period which is so wistfully looked back upon by fans of a certain vintage is the first decade of the 2000s.

After its initial emergence in 1992, the English top-flight enjoyed a secondary boom in popularity following the turn of the millennium, as overseas television deals and a secondary influx of foreign stars gave the league a truly global appeal. It played host to a number of the games modern icons, too, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry and Didier Drogba among those who lit up the Premier League on a weekly basis.

When fans refer to 'The Barclays', though, it is not those household names they are referring to. Instead it is the players who were largely in the background when it came to being headline-grabbing, but were seen as key cogs in the Premier League machine by die-hard fans, while still able to produce moments of magic on occasion.

These players have come to be known as the 'Barclaysmen', but what made them so beloved, and what became of them once their Barclays life was over? Here at GOAL, we will endeavour to find out with our latest series, 'Ultimate Barclaysmen'.

Perhaps the very embodiment of the Barclays generation is Rory Delap. In an era that saw Pep Guardiola and Barcelona's brand of tiki-taka show the world that technique, finesse and intelligence beats brute force and strength in football, Tony Pulis' Stoke City emerged to prove that a nasty streak still goes a long way. The Potters were big, bold and fairly brutal at times, earning a reputation as the anti-Barcelona to the point that the phrase "Could Lionel Messi do it on a wet and windy Wednesday night at Stoke?" became the sport's own 'Unstoppable force meets immovable object' paradox.

The Britannia Stadium club had a special element that allowed them to cause problems for even their most dangerous opponents – Delap's freakish long throws. Pulis' side made incredible use of the former javelin protege's throwing ability to confound defenders and goalkeepers and allow their burly forwards to capitalise. It left fans in awe, opponents flabbergasted and managers scrambling to find a way to stop it.

Delap's rare ability had an incredible impact on his team, as well as his opponents, and the league has seen nothing like him since.

Getty Images SportWhere he came from

Delap had been a bit of a journeyman before he catapulted himself to global fame by developing the niche ability to turn a throw-in into a deadly situation.

The west Midlands native's career started at Carlisle, where he was part of a promising generation of young players, and was still just a teenager when he was eased into the first-team. Delap blossomed as his side fought for the Third Division title and they earned promotion to the third-tier of English football in 1995, only to come back down the following season. Still a youngster, Delap stayed to help fire Carlisle back up the league as they came in third and just three points behind Wigan and Fulham.

He didn't hang around long beyond that, though, lasting just a few appearances before he made a tremendous leap in February 1998, joining Premier League team Derby County at the age of 21. Delap was quickly thrust into the Rams' starting XI, slotting in midfield beside Lee Carsley. They beat Everton on his top-flight debut, but Delap in particular stood out for then-Ireland manager Mick McCarthy.

"I remember an incident when Rory got involved with Duncan Ferguson," says McCarthy. "It was an ordeal for a young lad making his debut in the big time, but Rory didn't back off. And that impressed me. I'd always admired his skills and his ability to adapt to different jobs. But now I knew for sure that he had an unmistakable physical presence on the pitch as well."

Delap blossomed rapidly at Pride Park. After quickly establishing himself in the first-team, he went on to play an important role with goals and assists against the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, among others. Derby, however, ended up in a battle against relegation and Delap opted to make a move. After over three years and 111 appearances, he left Derby to join Southampton in the summer of 2001, becoming the club's record signing at £4 million.

AdvertisementBarclays highlights

Delap was an excellent servant at St Mary's, going on to make over 150 appearances over a four-year spell that included a stunning overhead-kick winner against Tottenham to end a two-year goal drought. He could not stop Southampton's unfortunate descent to the Championship in 2005, however, and joined Sunderland midway through the next season. The Black Cats were also in decline, though, and he was relegated for a second year in a row.

Seemingly desperate to keep wearing red and white stripes, Delap joined fellow Championship side Stoke on loan, only to see his season cut short in October when he suffered a broken leg against Sunderland in just his second game. Nevertheless, the Potters signed him on a permanent deal and while they missed out on promotion that term, Delap was a first-team regular the following season as they finished second and returned to the Premier League.

It was in the 2008-09 campaign that the mania around Delap's rare ability began. Stoke twice went ahead against Aston Villa in their second league game of the season, only for the visitors to pull level each time. Just as a point each seemed inevitable as the game ticked into the 94th minute, the hosts got a throw-in inside Villa's half. With a long run-up, Delap launched it into the box for Mamady Sidibe to head in.

"It was a problem all day but we thought we had resolved it," Villa boss Martin O'Neill said. "Whether it was a bit of luck or whatever, the ball ended up in our net. It's a part of the game and you have to cope with it and up to that point I thought we did pretty well."

Two weeks later, he terrorised Everton with two long throws that resulted in goals as they came back from two down, only to lose 3-2. Of their first seven goals in the top-flight, three had been handmade by Delap.

After he scored the winner against Tottenham, the human slingshot came back to haunt his former side in a 1-0 victory and three days later Arsene Wenger's Arsenal became victims as Tony Pulis' men won 2-1.

In one particularly iconic moment against Hull City, goalkeeper Boaz Myhill panicked under pressure with the ball at his feet and smacked it out for a corner to avoid the threat of a Delap throw.

Stoke chalked up another late win against Middlesbrough thanks to his incredible trick as he ended the campaign with five direct assists from throws. Normal service resumed in the first game of the 2009-10 season as he launched one off a Burnley defender's head to set up an own goal.

He was the secret weapon in Stoke's run to the FA Cup quarter-finals in 2009-10, too, providing throw-in assists as they beat York and Arsenal before rescuing a draw against Manchester City.

"Hopefully… we'll finally know how to deal with Delap's long throw," City goalkeeper Shay Given said before the replay, but they simply couldn't contain the threat as Stoke won 3-1. They made it to the final the following campaign with him setting up two goals along the way from the touchline, but this time City nullified the threat and won at Wembley.

Getty Images Sport'I've never seen anything like this'

Why were Delap's throw-ins so deadly? The midfielder was a promising javelin athlete before he turned to football and Delap discovered his ability could be useful during a youth game while at Carlisle. Allowing him to turn a regular throw-in into something more like a corner, but from an even more advantageous angle, he employed the long throw throughout his career. By the time he got to the Premier League as part of a tall, tough Stoke side, he had almost perfected it.

"It's more accurate than a corner and it's so tough to deal with," he explained. "A defender or attacker is more likely to flick it on than anything else. You have to use your natural assets. I used the throw-in in the Championship last season and the manager made clear that not a lot was going to change this season. It's not much different to what I've done at other clubs but it's getting more attention because we've got more height in the team and had more success with it. If it's done right, there is no way of defending it."

The simple but deadly gimmick generated plenty of discussion in the media, with many pundits praising Delap's effectiveness.

"He throws it very flat and it is very difficult for defenders to pick the ball up but I think the media has helped by giving it so much publicity," Pulis said after Stoke beat Arsenal thanks to two of his missiles. “I think people are frightened to death about it."

"Like a human sling," said David Moyes, while Lee Dixon wrote in a column in 2008: "I have never seen anyone with a throw-in like Delap's. Most long throws tend to be a bit loopy, whereas Delap's are fired in like a free-kick – but even more dangerous… It is unbelievable how he does it – his throws come in flat like an arrow."

Then-Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger complained about the trick, saying: "It is like kicking the ball. It is a little bit of an unfair advantage. He is using a strength that is usually not a strength in football."

"I have never seen anything like this in my life," said former Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Stoke's near-success in the FA Cup brought them into European football for the first time since 1974 as they reached the second round of the Europa League before being knocked out by Valencia.

Delap's playing time declined that season, though, as he entered his late 30s and it was his last full campaign for Stoke as he was loaned to Championship side Barnsley. He barely featured there, however, and at the age of 37 ended up in League Two with Burton Albion before retiring in December 2013.

It was the end of a unique career, as Delap was known around the world for his freakish throwing ability.

Having scored a decent amount of goals himself, though, he was more than a one trick pony, according to Pulis.

"He has been a bedrock of the success of Stoke City," he said, later stating: "You do not play over 500 league games, 400 of them in the top flight, to be just the person to pick the ball up and throw it in the box."

Rumours have continued in regards to who could be next through the door, with the club also working to bolster their academy ranks. It has been claimed that Forest have agreed a deal to sign 15-year-old goalkeeper Ally Graham from Dundee United, pipping rivals Newcastle United to a transfer.

Forest also appear to be battling the Magpies for Fiorentina winger Nico Gonzalez, with an enquiry made for his services, whereas Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez is another target and the club could soon make an offer for the Mexican.

Now, it looks as if the Reds are keen to sign a new in-demand teenage centre-back, but they may not have it all their own way.

Nottingham Forest interested in Bruno Ogbus

According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, Nottingham Forest are keen on signing Freiburg defender Bruno Ogbus ahead of Championship side Leeds United, however, the German side don’t want to sell the 18-year-old centre-back.

As can be seen, AC Milan have also shown an interest in Ogbus and have even made an offer for the Switzerland youth international earlier this month.

However, Freiburg have seemingly given clubs a hands-off warning when it comes to the defender, so a deal could be extremely tricky to complete this summer. Ogbus, who moved to Freiburg back in 2022 from Zurich, is yet to make his first-team debut, turning out instead for the U19s and reserve side.

Forest, meanwhile, have five senior centre-back options in Murillo, Nikola Milenkovic, Andrew Omobamidele, Wily Boly and Joe Worrall.

Scotland to play two ODIs against Netherlands in May, announce 13 central contracts

Scotland have not played international cricket since December 2019

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Apr-2021Scotland will end their lengthy international cricket hiatus in May with a two-match ODI series against Netherlands in Rotterdam on May 19 and 21. Under the UK government’s tiered plan to return to normalcy in the wake of the ongoing structured lockdown for Covid-19, unrestricted international travel is set to be lifted on May 17 while Scotland’s government has also targeted that date for the resumption of outdoor contact sports.”It’s been a long wait for the players and staff, but we have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure that the team are able to start playing international cricket again as soon as possible and we are delighted to be able to announce these matches against the Netherlands,” Cricket Scotland chief executive Gus Mackay said. “I’d like to thank everyone at KNCB (Netherlands cricket board) who has worked so hard with us to make these fixtures happen while respecting all COVID-19 protocols. It’s great to be looking ahead to international cricket again after so long without a match.”For the Netherlands, these will be the first ODIs since June 2019, when they played Zimbabwe. As it happened: Queensland vs New South Wales, Sheffield Shield final, 1st day

*Most recent entry will appear at the top, please refresh your page for the latest updates. All times are local.

4.30pm: Closing stages

New South Wales have made a breakthrough, Josh Hazlewood finding the edge of Joe Burns with a terrific delivery, but they are desperate to strike again in the final period of the day. Nathan Lyon has found some big spin early in his spell and Trent Copeland has challenged Marnus Labuschagne.

3.50pm: Starc strains for a breakthrough

The Queensland openers, Bryce Street and Joe Burns, have repelled the early exchanges against the new ball. Street has stood up against Mitchell Starc with the pair sharing a few words after the batter was struck on the chest. There have been a few near-misses – Trent Copeland nearly struck first ball when he squared up Burns – but New South Wales have not yet been rewarded. They need something soon.

3.00pm: New South Wales 143 all out

Michael Neser walks off after his five-wicket haul•Getty Images

A superb performance from Michael Neser and Jack Wildermuth has given Queensland control of the final. Neser took the final two wickets after tea to finish with 5 for 27. New South Wales will need to make inroads through the rest of the final session to get themselves back into the game. Having seen the success of the Queensland attack, Josh Hazlewood is the type of bowler who could be a considerable handful if he gets things right.

2.10pm: Tea – New South Wales 8 for 123

It’s not looking great for the visitors on the opening day. Jack Wildermuth ended the afternoon session with two wickets in two balls by removing Mitchell Starc and Sean Abbott. It will be down their bowling attack (a very strong one, it must be said) to keep them in the game. Here’s Dan Brettig on the day so far

There was always a gambling element to the youthful batting lineup selected by NSW for the Sheffield Shield final, betting on talent over experience to generate enough runs against Queensland. As the Blues ran into enormous trouble on the first afternoon at Allan Border Field, limping into tea at 8 for 123, the balance of the side was cause for some reflection. In several ways, the Blues’ young bats were unable to deal with the pressure of the bowling and the vagaries of a crusty pitch. Matt Gilkes misjudged Michael Neser and was bowled shouldering arms; Jason Sangha’s flying start was ended when he chose the wrong ball to pull; Jack Edwards drove unwisely at a tempting Neser away drifter, and Baxter Holt hung his bat out in a fashion he won’t want to look at on too many replays. With Daniel Hughes and Kurtis Patterson unable to go on to truly substantial scores, it added up to a world of pain for the visitors, even as Mitchell Swepson stood wicketless.

12.55pm: Michael Neser, again

Is there a player more unlucky to not yet have played a Test than Michael Neser? He is such a consistent performer for Queensland and his post-lunch spell has put them in control with him quickly adding the scalp of Jack Edwards to that of Jason Sangha. He has been a regular part of Australia squads for the last two years but hasn’t yet been able to crack into the XI. There’s an argument to say that the selectors should look beyond outright pace, especially on certain pitches. After this match he’s off for a spell with Glamorgan in county cricket where he’s sure to be a threat.

12.35pm: Sangha throws it away

There had been a hint of New South Wales putting the pressure back on Queensland after lunch with a little flurry of boundaries with Jason Sangha, who scored a century in the previous Shield match, being especially positive as he moved along at better than a run-a-ball. However, he then made a costly error when he took on a short delivery from Michael Neser and toe-ended a catch into the leg side to reinvigorate the home side with the ball still moving around.

11.30am: Lunch – New South Wales 2 for 54

The Queensland slip cordon wait for a chance•Getty Images

It’s been a tense morning at Allan Border Field with New South Wales doing well to be just two down. And there was a touch of controversy with the second wicket with Jack Wildermuth mighty close to a no-ball. Here’s Dan Brettig with a view of session:

An enigmatic surface made for an absorbing start to the Sheffield Shield final. Typically known for being flat as concrete, AB Field this time offered a pitch that was both extremely dry but also offering some green grass. The result was a generous helping of sideways seam movement with the new ball, well exploited by Michael Neser to bowl Matt Gilkes shouldering arms, and very nearly followed up by Jack Wildermuth having Daniel Hughes taken behind – only to see the low edge narrowly missed by a diving Jimmy Peirson. More intrigue was created by a couple of puffs of dust as balls appeared to go through the top of the surface, and there were signs of spin in Mitch Swepson’s exploratory couple of overs before lunch. Whatever happens, the pitch already looks like it will produce a result inside five days.

10.25am: What role for spin?

The Queensland seamers have been excellent so far, but this match also features the two best spinners in Australia: Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Swepson. We’ve already seen one delivery disturb the surface, albeit from a short length, which suggests there will be something for the spinners later.Lyon has been doing his stuff for seasons, but this summer has been very significant in Swepson’s development – it looked like he was done for the season with a neck injury but has made a timely recovery and in Wollongong earlier this month produced a delivery Shane Warne would have been proud of.Dan Brettig looks at Swepson’s development and what it could mean for AustraliaESPNcricinfo Ltd

10.00am: Early challenge against the new ball

It’s been a demanding start for the New South Wales top order against the new ball in the hands of Michael Neser and Jack Wildermuth. Neser has provided the first breakthrough when Matthew Gilkes shouldered arms and lost his off stump – it was a beautiful set-up from Neser who had been moving the ball away from the left hander. There has been nibble on offer for both bowlers.

9.30am: Play underway

A nervy start from New South Wales in the opening. Daniel Hughes gets an inside edge into the vacant short leg area then Matthew Gilkes would have been run out with a direct hit. Will be interesting to see how much movement there is with the new ball due to the earlier start.

9.15am: The talking points

New South Wales almost have Australia’s Test attack for this match (just missing Pat Cummins who is at the IPL) but there batting has a far more inexperienced look after changes were made following the 32 all out against Tasmania. However, there are already signs that was the right move. Dan Brettig takes a look at the future. The new breed: Jack Edwards, Lachlan Hearne, Jason Sangha•Getty Images

“The New South Wales selectors had already shown some degree of interest in the future arc of the national team by elevating Pat Cummins to the domestic limited-overs captaincy ahead of Smith. It was a call effectively indicating their preference for who they would like to see named national captain whenever the time comes for Tim Paine to surrender his post – most likely after next summer’s Ashes series, as commentary roles and the release of a memoir await him.

“At the same time, the Tasmania defeat forced a pivot to a far more less experienced batting line-up for the final Shield game against Queensland with a place in the final still to secure. Out went Larkin, Solway and Nevill; in came Matthew Gilkes, Jack Edwards, Lachlan Hearne and Baxter Holt as wicketkeeper. Of this group, Edwards (to turn 21 on the final day of the final) has already been heavily invested in, while Hearne (20) and Holt (21) have been growing ever more impatient for chances to show their wares.”

9.00am: The final act

It’s been a long season – the longest ever – and we’ve reached the final game. Who will take the Sheffield Shield title? It should be a terrific contest with a host of international players on show across both sides. The early news from Allan Border Field is that New South Wales have won the toss and will batQueensland 1 Bryce Street, 2 Joe Burns, 3 Marnus Labuschagne, 4 Usman Khawaja (capt), 5 Matt Renshaw, 6 Jimmy Peirson (wk), 7 Jack Wildermuth, 8 Michael Neser, 9 Xavier Bartlett, 10 Mitch Swepson, 11 Brendan DoggettNew South Wales 1 Daniel Hughes, 2 Matthew Gilkes, 3 Kurtis Patterson (capt), 4 Jason Sangha, 5 Jack Edwards, 6 Sean Abbott, 7 Baxter Holt (wk), 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Trent Copeland, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Josh HazlewoodWant to know how things are decided if it’s draw…here are the details

Offer pending: Newcastle plot move for £325k-p/w star who’s like Gordon

Miguel Almiron has been constantly touted with a move away from Newcastle United in recent months, with Saudi Arabia and the USA two potential destinations for the attacker.

The Paraguayan enjoyed his best spell for the Magpies during the 2022/23 campaign, scoring 11 times in the Premier League, as he helped the Magpies secure their place in the Champions League.

However, last season he endured a huge drop in form, only managing to score three times in the league, finding himself as more of a backup to the likes of Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy.

It’s unclear whether any deal could be struck for a potential for the 30-year-old, potentially allowing the club to find a replacement before the transfer deadline.

One player has emerged as a potential target for Eddie Howe’s side, after he was told he’s free to leave his current side.

Newcastle plotting move for £325k-p/w ace

According to GIVEMESPORT, Newcastle are seriously considering making a move to sign Chelsea outcast Raheem Sterling before the deadline next Friday.

The 29-year-old has been told by boss Enzo Maresca that he won’t be included in his plans this season, even being stripped of his squad number, with his number seven shirt being given to new signing Pedro Neto.

Sterling, who earns a reported £325k-per-week as per Capology, cost the Blues £50m back in 2022, becoming the first signing of the Todd Boehly era.

The report states that Newcastle have previously been interested in signing Sterling and are now debating whether to make an offer for him in this window, should the attacker be interested in a move to Tyneside.

The one-time England international has made 81 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 19 times – an average of one goal every 4.2 games played – but it appears as though it may not be enough to save his career at Stamford Bridge.

Why Sterling could be like Gordon for Newcastle

Anthony Gordon has been a hugely impressive player for Newcastle after his £45m move to the Magpies back in January 2023.

Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon

He enjoyed his best-ever professional campaign last season, registering 11 goals and ten assists in his 35 Premier League appearances – finishing the campaign with the second most goal contributions behind striker Alexander Isak.

His subsequent form saw him receive a call-up for the England national side for Euro 2024 this summer, but only featured for one minute during the entire tournament.

Magpies boss Howe will be hoping he can replicate his previous form this campaign, potentially forming an excellent partnership with Sterling should he move to Tyneside.

The pair produced some very similar stats during 2023/24, with FBref ranking the duo as similar players based on their respective figures.

When delving into their stats, the comparison is understandable, with the current Chelsea man bettering Gordon in numerous key areas for a forward.

The “sensational” Sterling, as described by journalist Mark Douglas, may have registered fewer combined goal contributions, but did manage to produce a higher goal per shot on target rate than his compatriot.

The former Manchester City talent also managed more progressive carries and progressive passes per 90 – showcasing his ability to cause carnage in the final third when having the ball at his feet.

He also registered more successful take-ons per 90, demonstrating his ability at being able to beat the opposition before creating an opportunity as seen by his goal contributions tally last season.

Raheem Sterling

Whilst it’s unclear how much the 29-year-old would cost the Magpies this summer, it’s evident that he has the quality to drastically improve the options at Howe’s disposal.

Undoubtedly, he would have to take a wage cut from his current astronomical wage, but the deal would be an excellent one for the club if they are able to get it over the line before the transfer deadline in less than a week.

The Magpies are still targeting attacking reinforcements before the end of the window.
