Arsenal convinced "unbelievably exciting" teenager is destined for stardom

Arsenal insiders are apparently convinced that a teenager at London Colney is just destined to become a star under manager Mikel Arteta, with those at London Colney highly rating him for quite some time.

Gary Neville: "Very underrated" Arsenal ace way more crucial than Odegaard

The Sky Sports pundit has had his say on Arsenal’s best players.

1 ByEmilio Galantini Sep 27, 2024

Declan Rice, Raheem Sterling, Kai Havertz and a brace from Ethan Nwaneri sealed a routine win for Arsenal against the League One minnows, but Arteta’s side have little time to celebrate, as Leicester City await them in the Premier League this afternoon.

They go into the game without club captain Martin Odegaard once again, who is set to be sidelined for weeks as he continues his recovery from an ankle ligament injury. Odegaard may not return until late October, or perhaps even November, but Arteta is very pleased with how his side have responded without their captain.

“If you put me in this scenario before I started this season with the calendar that we were given,” said Arteta on Odegaard.

“The fixtures that we had, the three away games that we had and the amount of injuries that we had to deal with and how we got out of that, I would be very, very pleased. It’s not just Martin, obviously he’s one of our best players and a player that has more impact on the team in many ways, but there were many others as well and the team has coped extremely well because we have an exceptional group. A lot of players have taken a different role in the leadership, in their importance in the team and they embrace that challenge. I’m really happy for that.”

With Odegaard out of the team for a while, it could be a wonderful chance to hand Nwaneri some senior minutes, following his impressive performance against Bolton.

Arsenal insiders are convinced Nwaneri will be a star

As per GiveMeSport, Arsenal insiders have been convinced that Nwaneri is destined for stardom, and they’ve held that belief since he joined the north London club at Under-9 level.

As such, they will not even entertain the thought of their 17-year-old prodigy leaving on loan for the second half of the season, as Arteta appears to have big plans for the teenage attacking midfielder.

“This will do him really good,” said former Premier League midfielder Michael Brown after Nwaneri’s performance against Bolton.

“We talked about having the experience around him, being able to play with Raheem Sterling, Declan Rice and others. He is going to learn so much and he has contributed in the game. He’s an unbelievably exciting talent and I think of all the coaches who want to bring on and develop young players, Mikel Arteta is the right person for him.

“A wonderful night for him and his family.”

Ryan ten Doeschate, the Netherlands international and former Essex captain, will retire from professional cricket at the end of 2021.South Africa-born all-rounder ten Doeschate, who turned 41 in June, joined Essex in 2003 after impressing Graham Gooch during a pre-season game in South Africa. He went on to make 554 appearances across all formats for the club over 19 seasons, scoring 17,046 runs and taking 348 wickets. He has played 33 ODIs and 22 T20Is for the Netherlands and was recently named in their 15-man squad for next month’s T20 World Cup. To know that he won’t be playing for Essex again is a sad day for the club.”I have always admired him, not only as a cricketer, who I believe has won more games for Essex than anyone else I have played with. Ipswich let a "great" player leave for £0, now he’s outscoring Szmodics

Ipswich Town will know that their chances of staying up in the Premier League this campaign are somewhat slim, but Kieran McKenna’s Tractor Boys have always thrived when being an underdog under the manager’s stellar tenure to date.

Ipswich managed to achieve back-to-back promotions to the top-flight against heavy odds, and minus their humbling 4-1 defeat to West Ham United last time out on the road haven’t looked completely out of their depth dining at the elite table.

It will be a long and gruelling campaign ahead though that will test his side’s resolve, which will be made even harder if McKenna can’t manage to get a tune out of more of his attackers, away from Liam Delap’s heroics up top.

Szmodics and Chaplin's form this season

Whilst Delap has been an instant rip-roaring success in Suffolk, with the £20m summer recruit hammering home an impressive four strikes from seven games for his new relegation-threatened outfit, Sammie Szmodics has struggled to nail down a starting spot since his major move from Blackburn Rovers.

The current Championship golden boot holder has averaged only 44 minutes of action per game in the Premier League, with his showing against Southampton last month a real concern, as the Republic of Ireland international only managed to make a dire seven accurate passes alongside only being able to register one shot on target at Aaron Ramsdale’s shaky goal.

Of course, the ex-Peterborough United star did manage to score away at Manchester City to send the Tractor Boys away faithful into raptures back in August, but it’s been extremely stop-start since with no more goals coming his way.

It’s a similar story for Conor Chaplin too in McKenna’s current ranks, who has only managed to make the first-team from the get-go once this season in the top-flight, despite being crucial to Ipswich’s automatic promotion heroics last campaign.

The ex-Barnsley man does have one goal next to his name like Szmodics, but that was on a far less glamorous stage than his counterpart, with Chaplin firing home a strike in an EFL Cup tie versus League Two outfit AFC Wimbledon.

Registering 13 goals and eight assists in second-tier action throughout 2023/24, the 27-year-old will just pray his campaign this time around is a slow burner and he can eventually acclimatise to the pressures of the Premier League.

McKenna will hope these two can come good over time, with one ex-Tractor Boys player currently outperforming the out-of-sorts duo away from Suffolk.

How Dobra is performing after leaving Ipswich

The player in question is Chesterfield star Armando Dobra, who is a firm fan favourite to those with associations with the Spireites.

Funnily enough, the tricky Albania U21 international has come into his own at Chesterfield under the guidance of ex-Ipswich manager Paul Cook, with Dobra now a top performer for his team all the way down in League Two.

Only managing to make 30 forgettable first-team appearances at Portman Road before exiting in 2022 on a free transfer, there must be some anguish now that Ipswich didn’t persist more with the 23-year-old, who constantly gets fans out of their seats at Chesterfield with entertaining displays.

Last campaign, Dobra amassed a stunning 20 goal contributions as his team finally returned to the EFL, with Spireites coach Danny Webb labelling the explosive number 17 as a “great” talent right after he penned a new deal to stay put with this side on the rise until 2026.

He has taken to being back in the EFL well too, with three strikes managed in all competitions from 12 games this campaign so far, surpassing both Szmodics and Chaplin’s goal tallies in the process.

Of course, the gulf in quality is huge between League Two and the very pinnacle of the English game, but there will still be some regrets at the end of the Tractor Boys all the same about potentially ditching Dobra too prematurely.

McKenna and Co won’t actively lose too much sleep over this situation, however, as Dobra continues to shine in the fourth tier, whilst Ipswich aim to stay put in the top flight.

Vinicius showcased his brilliance yet again as Madrid secured a dominant 5-1 win over RB Salzburg in the Champions League. The Brazilian winger dazzled the crowd with two breathtaking goals, bringing his overall tally to 101 goals for the club, to further solidify his legacy at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Amid his stellar contributions for Los Blancos, reports have linked the 24-year-old with a potential exit, fuelled by interest from the Saudi Pro League. It is believed that top SPL officials are preparing a staggering €350 million (£296m/$365m) offer for the Brazilian star, a figure that would shatter the current world-record transfer fee of €222m (£200m/$231m) set by Neymar’s move from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.

WHAT VINICIUS SAID

When asked about his future amidst the transfer rumours, Vinicius left no doubt about where his heart lies, declaring: "My future? Real Madrid!"

Reflecting on his milestone of 101 goals with the club, he expressed his deep connection to Los Blancos: "One hundred and one goals with my dream club. I came as a child and being able to enter the history of this club makes me the happiest person in the world. Thanks to all my mates for helping me reach this number. Hala Madrid!"

The victory over Salzburg lifted Madrid to 16th in the Champions League standings, securing at least a place in the play-off round. However, the defending champions still have the opportunity to advance directly to the top eight, which would grant them automatic qualification for the last 16. For that to happen, Madrid will need to defeat Brest in their final league-phase match and rely on several favourable results from other fixtures.

As bad as Trossard: Arteta must now drop 5/10 Arsenal dud after Shakhtar

Arsenal made it two wins from three in the Champions League this season, securing a 1-0 win over Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk at the Emirates last night.

Mikel Arteta’s side never really looked as though they got themselves out of second gear, and struggled to really secure the victory in a convincing manner.

The only goal came after Gabriel Martinelli’s superb effort cannoned off the base of the post onto the back of the helpless Dmytro Riznyk and into the back of the net.

The Gunners registered a total of 13 shots in North London, but were unable to add to their tally, having to settle for a hard-fought 1-0 victory.

As a result, Arteta’s side remain unbeaten in Europe so far this season, still yet to concede a goal after their first three outings, looking in a strong position to advance to the knockout stages.

However, the result could’ve been more convincing had numerous players taken the chances they had been presented with during the meeting.

Leandro Trossard’s stats against Shakhtar

After failing to make a huge impact in the weekend’s defeat to Bournemouth – notably giving the ball away for William Saliba’s sending off – forward Leandro Trossard was handed an opportunity last night to impress from the off.

However, the Belgian endured a night to forget, producing some poor figures during the defeat and looking a shadow of his former self – which saw him bag 17 goals in all competitions last campaign.

The 29-year-old featured for a total of 87 minutes last night, managing just 38 touches in the process, completing only 21 passes and losing possession seven times in an all-round wasteful display.

Despite his lack of impact throughout the encounter, he was handed a chance to get himself on the scoresheet, stepping up to take the penalty during the closing stages.

However, Trossard had his tame effort saved by Riznyk, looking caught in two minds whether to go down the middle or place the ball to the goalkeeper’s left.

It was an all-around disappointing night for the Gunners’ number 19, but he wasn’t alone in producing a below-par performance for Arteta’s side.

The man who was just as poor as Trossard

Despite being named as a substitute at the weekend, striker Gabriel Jesus was recalled to the starting lineup, and was even named as Arteta’s captain for the Champions League clash at the Emirates.

However, the Brazilian wouldn’t feature in his natural centre-forward role, but instead on the right-hand side of Arsenal’s attack, covering for the injured Bukayo Saka.

Whilst the recall could’ve handed Jesus that confidence boost he so desperately needed, he was unable to change his fortunes of late, once again failing to impress.

During his 68-minute display, the 27-year-old only completed one of his attempted crosses and lost possession 12 times as he often looked wasteful when in possession.

Jesus’ wastefulness translated into his chances in front of goal, missing one big chance after firing his one-on-one opportunity straight at the legs of the opposition ‘keeper.

As a result, Football London’s Kaya Kaynak handed the Brazilian a 5/10 match rating, an indication of how poor he was during the European victory.

This Sunday, Arsenal host the in-form Liverpool at the Emirates, desperate to continue their winning record and give them the best chance of competing for the Premier League title this season.

However, Jesus must be nowhere near the starting lineup, with every Gunner praying that Saka will be fit enough to return for the huge clash.

Crystal Palace wanted "best LB in the world" but got Van Aanholt instead

Crystal Palace’s recruitment over the past couple of years has seen them sign some excellent talent who have made a huge impact on the first team or even bank the club a huge profit.

Michael Olise is just one example of a player who succeeded at Selhurst Park before leaving for a sizeable profit, with his funds undoubtedly making the club more sustainable.

The Frenchman arrived in a £8m move from Reading back in 2021, before featuring 90 times for the Eagles in all competitions, securing a £50m move to European giants Bayern Munich this summer.

Crystal Palace's Michael Olise

Adam Wharton is another name who has starred for the Eagles in recent times, arriving as an unknown quantity from Blackburn Rovers in a £18m deal back in January.

However, just nine months on from his move to the Premier League, the 20-year-old has taken to the division like a duck to water, earning himself his first-ever England call-up for the Euro 2024 squad over the summer.

Their recent recruitment has been impressive, but they also managed to secure a move for another talent back in January 2017, with the signing enjoying a successful spell at Selhurst Park.

Patrick van Aanholt’s stats for Crystal Palace

Dutch left-back Patrick van Aanholt joined Palace in a £14m deal from Sunderland seven years ago, with the now 34-year-old cementing himself as the club’s first choice in that area over several years.

Patrick Van Aanholt

He amassed a total of 134 appearances for the Eagles over a four-year spell in the capital, scoring 14 times – a reasonable tally for a full-back it has to be said.

Van Aanholt was part of a side that continuously secured the club’s Premier League status, producing some memorable individual moments along the way, including a superb free-kick against Newcastle United back in 2020.

However, he would depart the club in the summer of 2021 at the end of his contract, joining Turkish side Galatasaray on a free transfer – ending his spell with the Eagles.

Whilst he was an excellent servant for the club, he moved to the club during the same period as a youth talent was on the radar of owner Steve Parish, with the club now ruing the failure to secure a deal for the talent.

The player who Crystal Palace missed out on

Alphonso Davies has rapidly emerged as one of the leading left-backs in world football despite his tender age of just 23 – starring on a regular basis for Bayern Munich.

Davies, who’s now teammates with former Palace star Olise, moved to the European giants back in 2018 from MLS Vancouver Whitecaps for a fee in the region of just £16.6m – a bargain given his current market value.

The Canadian international is now valued at £42m as per Transfermarkt, with Palace undoubtedly missing out by not completing a deal for the superstar when he was a youngster.

Josko Gvardiol

Current owner Parish admitted that he had the opportunity to sign the left-back as a youngster, claiming that a work permit scuppered a potential move.

In an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung via GOAL a couple of years ago, he said:

“When he was 15, 16 in a football school in Edmonton, where my sister lives, she recommended him to me.

“We flew to Canada especially to see the player. We wanted to sign him, but once again we couldn’t get a work permit in England. True story! I still have all the mails. I’m sure he would have been interested in coming to us – and we were very early!”

It’s really unfortunate that the club were unable to complete a deal for the talent considering the heights he’s gone on to reach since his failed move to the Eagles seven years ago, having been dubbed the “best left-back in the world” by Alexi Lalas.

However, unfortunately for Parish and the supporters, Davies will go down as yet another case of what could’ve been had they completed a move for the elite-level talent.

"New possibility" – Man Utd have approached "fantastic" Amorim alternative

Manchester United have been in talks with Ruben Amorim to become their new manager this week, but they have also made an approach for a “fantastic” manager, according to a new report.

The Red Devils have begun their search for an eighth manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired back in 2013, and INEOS will hope they can find the perfect fit this time, as they try desperately to get the club back fighting for the top honours in football.

Not Ruud: Man Utd face Solskjaer 2.0 by hiring "bland" Ten Hag successor

Ruud van Nistelrooy will only be in temporary charge of Man Utd

ByJoe Nuttall Oct 29, 2024 Man Utd manager latest

Since United announced the departure of Erik ten Hag on Monday morning, there have been several names linked with the vacancy, as there were even before the Dutchman had left his post.

Spanish great Xavi Hernández was a name that emerged recently, as it was reported that Omar Berrada held meetings with the now unemployed manager in Barcelona. However, that looks to be a non-starter, as Xavi is keen to take a year away and then start a new project in the summer. Meanwhile, Julian Nagelsmann also emerged as an option on Monday for the Red Devils, but as of yet, that is as far as it’s gone.

Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim

The frontrunner and the man who looks set to land the Man United job is Sporting CP manager Amorim, as he’s agreed in principle to take the United job. United are now working on completing a deal with the Portuguese side and are ready to pay his 10 million euros (£8m+) release clause in order to bring him to the club.

However, it doesn’t stop there for United, as a report from a top Spanish reporter overnight revealed there is another name in the frame for the managerial role.

Man Utd have approached "fantastic" Fulham manager

According to Guillem Balague, Manchester United have made an approach to Fulham manager Marco Silva. Amorim looks to be the favourite to secure the job still, but he could opt to wait for the Manchester City opening instead, revealed the reporter late on Monday evening.

Balague adds that United are pushing to complete a deal for the 39-year-old Amorim despite his apparent interest in succeeding Pep Guardiola. But even though that is the case, United have made an approach to Silva, who has been described as doing “fantastic work” at Craven Cottage by West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui.

Silva, another Portuguese manager, has been at Fulham since July 2021 and has taken charge of over 150 games for the club. The 47-year-old guided the Cottagers to Championship promotion in his first season and has since helped establish the club as a solid midtable to top half Premier League team.
