New Zealand collapse after Kane Williamson hundred to open door for England

After the marathon, get ready for a sprint. England shot off in now-familiar style in pursuit of a series-sealing victory at Basin Reserve after New Zealand’s rearguard, underpinned by a doughty 26th Test hundred from Kane Williamson, had ended in a calamitous collapse on the fourth evening.Williamson’s efforts during an innings that spanned more than seven hours at the crease had put New Zealand in a position where they could hope to set England a target well in excess of 300 – all the more remarkable given they had been made to follow on 226 runs in arrears. But Harry Brook proved an unlikely inspiration with the ball and Jack Leach mopped up the tail as New Zealand’s last five wickets went down for the addition of 28 runs.Set 258 to win on a pitch which had become increasingly placid through the course of days three and four, England reached 48 for 1 at the close. Zak Crawley was the man to fall, having played another attacking cameo, madly hacking five boundaries in his 24 off 30 before having his stumps disturbed by a pinpoint offcutter from Tim Southee.Related

England had shaved 39 off the target by that point, and then sent out Ollie Robinson as a quasi-nighthawk, who unsuccessfully attempted to slog-sweep Michael Bracewell’s offspin in the final over the day. The requirement of another 210 runs with nine wickets standing is unlikely to daunt a side that has made a speciality of rip-roaring fourth-innings chases while winning 10 of their last 11 Tests. For New Zealand, who showed tremendous fight through the efforts of Williamson, Tom Blundell and Daryl Mitchell, as well as Tom Latham and Devon Conway on day three, there remained the possibility of becoming only the fourth team in history to win a Test having been made to follow on.Having made steady progress through the first two sessions, losing just two wickets along the way, New Zealand’s innings was thrown off kilter by the appearance of Brook, English cricket’s golden boy, to bowl some wobbly seamers. He quickly proved to have a golden arm, as the final ball of his third over brought a maiden Test wicket – that of Williamson, for a seemingly ironclad 132.Brook’s gentle mediums succeeded where England’s two most-prolific Test wicket-takers had failed, as Williamson attempted to leg glance only for a review to pick up the faintest of tickles through to the keeper, Ben Foakes.Harry Brook appeals for the wicket of Kane Williamson•AFP/Getty Images

England picked up a second wicket out of nowhere shortly after, as Bracewell was guilty of failing to run his bat in coming back for a third. Ben Stokes, limping for much of his day in the field, had gamely given chase out to deep midwicket and fired in a throw, with Foakes demolishing the bails one-handed as Bracewell coasted through the crease.Southee was unable to repeat his first-innings heroics with the bat, top-edging a swipe at Leach to point, and Matt Henry fell in the same over via an edge to slip. Blundell, having become a bewildered onlooker following the end of his 158-run stand with Williamson, then attempted to throw the bat only to skew an outside edge to slip ten runs short of his hundred. After toiling for 61.3 overs, Leach suddenly had a five-for – the first by a spinner in a Test in New Zealand since Keshav Maharaj in 2017.The story of the day until then had been Williamson, who overtook Ross Taylor to become New Zealand’s leading Test run-scorer during an innings that showcased all of his minimalist qualities. He was given able support by Mitchell and Blundell, the latter helping to subject England to a second wicketless afternoon session in a row as New Zealand switched from looking to erase their deficit to remorselessly building a lead.Having flicked the fourth ball of the morning through midwicket to go past his longtime former team-mate Taylor, Williamson was content to bob along at his own pace, playing with soft hands and barely giving up anything resembling a chance. The closest England came to dislodging him was an attempted stumping off Leach, but although Williamson had dragged his back foot out of the crease, his reflexes were quick enough to get a toe over the line as Foakes whipped off the bails. The former captain was joined in the trenches by Blundell, who made his sixth 50-plus score in 11 innings against England. His innings, inevitably, was the more skittish, as England ran through a range of tactics to try to unsettle the pair – including James Anderson bowling round the wicket with the keeper up and four men catching in a leg-side ring.Nothing was successful until Stokes belatedly turned to Brook, although a short-ball ploy almost brought the wicket of Blundell on 30, but his firmly struck pull was grassed by Anderson at backward square leg.England began the day with a still-new ball to aid their efforts and Robinson struck early to remove Henry Nicholls, with New Zealand still two runs from parity. Mitchell then boshed his way to a run-a-ball 54, a frenetic innings that saw him target Anderson with a series of front-foot mows and reach his fifty by hoisting Leach into the stands at long-on, before top-edging an ungainly hack at Stuart Broad to end a 75-run stand with Williamson.Nicholls had flirted with danger throughout his innings, and was eventually held in the slips at the fourth attempt by the juggling Brook – from whom there turned out to be more magic to come.

"Decisive" £8m star who Wolves want now available half-price due to clause

Wolverhampton Wanderers are vying for the signature of a “decisive” forward this summer, and he will now be available for half the original price due to a special clause, according to a report.

Wolves bracing for summer departures

Wolves find themselves in the midst of a relegation battle, having been on a very poor run of form in the Premier League prior to the victory against Aston Villa last time out, although they have had some extremely tough fixtures.

Any relegated side will always find it tough to hold on to their best players, and if the Old Gold do drop back down to the Championship for the first time since 2018, they may be forced to cash-in.

However, the same could apply even if they avoid the drop, given that some top clubs are queuing up for Matheus Cunha, with the likes of Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Manchester United all being linked with moves in recent times.

Of course, Vitor Pereira will be hoping to keep hold of Cunha, given just how vital a player the forward has been this season, scoring 11 goals in the Premier League.

However, if the 25-year-old does move on, Pereira will have to bring in some new attacking options, and a report from SportBILD (via Sport Witness) has now revealed Wolves are among the clubs competing to sign Hertha BSC’s Ibrahim Maza.

There is set to be fierce competition for Maza’s signature, however, with seven Premier League clubs named as potential suitors, including Newcastle United and Manchester City.

Interestingly, Hertha were keen to hold out for a fee of €20m (£16.7m) in the January transfer window, but a clause in the 19-year-old’s contract means the asking price is set to halve, indicating he could be available for around £8m, with an exit likely.

Maza impressing in the Bundesliga II

The Algerian has emerged as a key player for Hertha in the second tier of German football this season, picking up five goals and four assists in 21 games.

With an average match rating of 7.10, the youngster is ranked as the second-best performing player in the squad, so it is little wonder he has started to attract the attention of Premier League clubs.

Freelance scout Ben Mattinson has stated he believes the number 10 is capable of playing for a top club, while also providing an overview of his key strengths.

As such, if Wolves manage to avoid the drop, they should undoubtedly make an approach for Maza, especially considering he will now be available for a lower fee.

Warner: Langer's contract offer a kick in the face

However he added that the former coach lost ‘a fair few players’ during his tenure

David Warner claims Cricket Australia’s decision to only offer Justin Langer a six-month contract was a “kick in the face”, while admitting the coach lost several key players in the team. The build up to and fallout of Langer’s exit as coach last year is a key focus of the second season of documentary, which will be released on Friday on Prime Video.Langer’s departure at the end of last summer came after Cricket Australia took on board concerns over the coach’s intensity at the end of his initial four-year deal. He was offered a new six-month contract with no chance of an extension, which he promptly rejected and resigned.Langer has since made clear his frustration over the situation, speaking out in several interviews and columns before the start of the Test summer.Related

Warner’s comments come after after Tim Paine also labelled the short contract “embarrassing”, “unprofessional” and “a disgrace” in his autobiography, claiming CA took the easy way out knowing Langer would not accept it.”He wanted to keep coaching. It was a bit of a kick in the face to offer him a six-month contract,” Warner said in the documentary.Regardless, Warner also laid bare the situation within the squad. “He lost a fair few players, and probably the wrong players,” he said. The documentary shows the players speaking candidly on the Langer issue, with captain Pat Cummins telling AAP this week he is hopeful it can provide context and take some of the heat out of any lingering public anger over the matter. In the first episode of the series, Cummins says players were walking on eggshells around the coach, while Usman Khawaja reveals others were afraid of Langer.Nathan Lyon admits he struggled with Langer’s up-and-down nature, with the former Test opener known for riding every ball.Players, however, also make clear Langer’s significant influence in the rebuild from the ball-tampering scandal and the revival of the national team’s public image. But, Cummins is adamant the decision to move on from Langer should not have come as a shock.”The Ashes, it all came to a head because his contract came up,” Cummins told viewers. “There was nothing out of the blue. We had spoken about a lot of these things over the previous 18 months to two years He was brilliant when we needed him in those initial years.”Cummins and other players reasoned the team had wanted to create a more level player-driven environment after the 2020-21 home series loss to India.”The team had changed a lot over a four-year period,” quick Josh Hazlewood said.  “We were probably in need of a different support staff and different coach, as opposed to four years ago when JL started.”

Smriti Mandhana ruled out of Pakistan game due to finger injury

Smriti Mandhana, the India vice-captain, has been ruled out of the team’s T20 World Cup opener against Pakistan in Cape Town on Sunday due to a finger injury. However, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, the stand-in coach, has confirmed there’s no fracture, which means Mandhana is likely to be available from India’s second game onwards, against West Indies on February 15.He was more bullish on Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain, who has been declared fit to play. Harmanpreet had picked up a shoulder niggle during the recently-concluded tri-series against West Indies and South Africa.Related

“Harman is fit to play. She has batted for the last two days in the nets, she is fine,” Kanitkar said at the pre-match press conference. “Smriti has a finger injury and is still recovery, so she won’t play most-likely. It’s not a fracture and we’re hopeful she will be available from the second game onwards.”‘Looking forward to Pakistan game’Kanitkar, no stranger to India-Pakistan clashes, having hit the winning runs in the famous Independence Cup final in 1998 in Dhaka, expressed satisfaction at his team’s level of preparedness ahead of the tournament. India are looking to build on their runners-up finish at the previous edition in Australia in 2020.As far as head-to-head goes, India haven’t enjoyed the best of records against Pakistan in the tournament, having lost to them in 2012 and 2016. But Kanitkar emphasised on the group’s camaraderie and spirit, which he thought is at its best ahead of the 2023 edition.”You want to be playing the strong teams, the arch-rivals if you can cal them that,” Kanitkar said. “Few of them have done it in the past, few haven’t. We are totally prepared for what happens, the atmosphere is good.”Most of them have played Pakistan in the past, they know what can happen and what the atmosphere is like. One of the privileges of playing international cricket is you play matches like these. Everyone is looking forward to it.”Having trained and played matches in South Africa for over three weeks, Kanitkar assessed conditions to be spin-friendly. India have their squad well covered on that front, with the squad having as many as four frontline spin options in Deepti Sharma, Radha Yadav, Devika Vaidya and Rajeshwari Gayakwad.”Spinners will have a role to play,” he said. “A lot of matches have taken place here, lots of T20 cricket has been played. “Pitches in East London were pretty similar to what we get in India, but Cape Town [venue for India’s first two group games] am not sure. I watched the match yesterday [South Africa v Sri Lanka] and the pitch looked good. There was some assistance for spin, but it will make for good cricket.”‘Sky is the limit for Richa Ghosh’Kanitkar didn’t give away too much in terms of team combination. He was non-committal when asked how big a role Shikha Pandey could play. Pandey forced her way back into the national team after close to 18 months following strong domestic performances. In the tri-series that just finished, where India were runners-up, Pandey bowled all of seven wicketless overs in three matches. India’s other pace options include Renuka Singh, Pooja Vastrakar and rookie Anjali Sarvani.”She will play a vital role at some point or the other,” Kanitkar said. “Experience does count. Have seen it too many times in the past as well. She is going to make a difference to us. Also, she bats well which many people don’t know. So it works well for us.”What about Richa Ghosh, who is being talked of as one of the biggest finds in recent times? In the home series against Australia, Ghosh impressed with her ability to hit the long ball from get go. Recently, she was part of India’s victorious Under-19 World Cup winning squad, even though her returns weren’t particularly impressive.”She’s an exciting prospect,” Kanitkar said. “She has a good future in front of her. If she continues to work hard and if all those things goes well, and she maintains the right attitude which she has, then sky is the limit.”

Keane criticised Maddison for his lack of consistency earlier in the season, with the Tottenham star hitting back by scoring the winner against United in the Premier League clash between the two in February and doing his darts celebration. Keane then hit back by saying: "Good on him. Absolutely no problem. I still go with what I said, I don't think he does enough of that."
