Imran Khan arrested again, sentenced to three years in prison

Former Pakistan captain Imran Khan, who served as the country’s Prime Minister between 2018 and 2022, has been arrested and sentenced to three years in jail.A report said Imran, 70, had been sentenced by a Pakistan trial court for not declaring the proceeds of state gifts to the Election Commission of Pakistan. His political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has already filed an appeal with the country’s Supreme Court. In previous instances, any attempts to arrest Imran from his residence were met with significant resistance from his supporters, foiling at least two arrest attempts. When he was finally arrested on May 9, protests and rioting erupted across the country, leading to a severe crackdown against his party and a bill to try his supporters in military courts, a move that violates international law.Related

When Imran was arrested in May, he was ordered to be released two days later by the Supreme Court, which declared the arrest illegal.Since Imran’s release was ordered by a judge on May 11, he has been ordered to appear in Pakistan’s courts in more than 150 cases registered against him. He has repeatedly said he risks being imprisoned in interviews and broadcasts on his social media channels. This case, in which a judge declared him guilty for concealing revenue earned from the sale of state gifts from the Election Commission of Pakistan, is locally known as the Toshakhana case. The court has imposed the maximum possible penalty allowed under the law, three years in prison and a fine of PKR 100,000. Imran’s lawyers said they have already appealed the verdict. Under the law, the appellate court can suspend the sentence until a verdict on the appeal is reached. Before entering politics, Imran represented Pakistan in 88 Tests and 175 ODIs for Pakistan and led them to the World Cup title in 1992.

PSG thrashed Atletico Madrid 4-0 in their Club World Cup group-stage opener, but the focus quickly turned from goals to heat. Played at noon in Pasadena, Los Angeles, the match kicked off in searing conditions, with temperatures reaching nearly 40°C under the sun and 60% humidity. The schedule, meant to suit European prime-time audiences, left players visibly exhausted on the pitch and drew vocal criticism from both teams.

To cater to UEFA-friendly time slots, FIFA scheduled marquee matches like PSG vs Atletico Madrid at 12:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST), replicating the familiar Champions League evening slot in Europe. But with the 2025 Club World Cup being staged in the U.S. summer, this move has sparked concerns. The PSG boss and midfielder Vitinha, along with the Atletico’s Marcos Llorente, raised red flags about the unbearable playing conditions, calling it a direct threat to match quality and player welfare.

Speaking after PSG’s dominant win, both Enrique and Vitinha voiced strong concerns about the extreme heat during the midday kick-off in LA, with the coach saying: “The match was clearly influenced by the temperature. The time slot is great for European audiences, but the teams are suffering. In terms of play, it's impossible to perform at a very high level for 90 minutes,” he added, despite praising the club’s dominance."

The Portuguese international echoed those concerns in his own during the post-match presser: "Of course, it's difficult. It's for both teams. It might be a bit harder for Atlético because they don't have the ball. For me, it's harder to run after the ball. It's hot here today at this time. I'm all red. It was really difficult, but we're trying to recover as much as possible because at this point in the season, it can be decisive."

VinIcius Jr. warned on : “It’s very hot. The game is at 3:00 p.m. and we have to be prepared because it's going to be very tough.”

Meanwhile, PSG will play Botafogo in Pasadena again at 6 p.m. local time. Atletico Madrid travel to Seattle, where the forecast is a far cooler 19°C.

Sai Kishore joins the quicks' party to take South Zone to Duleep Trophy title

West Zone’s fight ended once Priyank Panchal fell early on the final day and they stopped 75 short in low-scoring title clash

Shashank Kishore16-Jul-2023″I opened the curtains and looked up towards the skies first thing after I woke up.”Hanuma Vihari knew South Zone wouldn’t have it easy picking up the five remaining West Zone wickets to win the Duleep Trophy final on Sunday. They still had 116 runs to defend, but Priyank Panchal was unbeaten on 92 overnight, having played an innings of great defiance and skill on a Chinnaswamy track that was showing signs of wear and tear.As it turned out, Vihari’s prayers were answered as the day dawned overcast and grey in Bengaluru, allowing the seamers to come into the game immediately. Vidwath Kaverappa, fresh off a career-best 7 for 53 in the first innings that earned him applause and a pep talk from the national selectors, nicked off Panchal in the second over of the day with one that held its line. The big hurdle in South’s way was out of the way. From there on, it seemed as though victory was a foregone conclusion. West’s batting might was subsided with precision and well-laid bowling plans.R Sai Kishore, the left-arm spinner, picked up three of the five wickets to fall on the final day; each of them courtesy flight that lulled lower-order batters into playing the big shots. It was a ringing endorsement of how well the pacers bowled right through the game, because batters were looking for a release at the first available opportunity against spin.Unfortunately, they didn’t get it.R Sai Kishore picked up four wickets in the second innings after not getting much of a bowl in the first•PTI Dharmendrasinh Jadeja was out miscuing a slog to mid-off, Chintan Gaja was out caught at midwicket as he attempted a heave, and Atit Sheth, the last man out, was done in by the dip as he swung for the hills. Sai Kishore walked away with 4 for 57 after having minimal bowling to do for large parts.Seamer V Koushik was the pick of the bowlers, though. His spell late on the fourth day, which accounted for the wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara and Suryakumar Yadav in the space of three deliveries, made the difference in the game.Koushik, whose bowling action is bit of a throwback to Mohinder Amarnath’s – the saunter and an air of languidness before finishing with a whippy action – profited from accuracy and late movement that didn’t allow batters to switch off.At 30, he may be a late bloomer, but the performance was another reminder of the value he brings to Karnataka in domestic cricket, and the potential they have to develop a fine bowling unit with Kaverappa, who earned the Player-of-the-Match award, and Vijaykumar Vyshak. In all, the Karnataka pace trio picked up 16 of the 20 West wickets. Kaverappa’s seven-for set up the game in the first innings and Koushik’s blows tripped West in the second at a time when the game was delicately poised.Vyshak, who is riding a wave of confidence following a debut IPL stint earlier this year, also impressed with his improved pace and sustained short-ball tactic that felled Prithvi Shaw at a crucial juncture in the first innings after he had made 65. That South found themselves in the final was incidentally because of Vyshak’s telling spell in the semi-final against North Zone, where he picked up 5 for 76 to limit the lead, in a game that was decided by fine margins.Vidwath Kaverappa was named the Player of the Match for his seven-for in the first innings•PTI West were comfortably the more accomplished batting line-up on paper, but South proved cricket was played on the field. Pujara, who fill be flying off to the UK to finish his county commitments with Sussex, managed scores of 28, 133, 9 and 15 in his four outings; Suryakumar, India’s T20I vice-captain, had disappointing returns, managing just one half-century in four knocks.Shaw, who has chosen to play in England instead of in the Deodhar Trophy, managed 26, 25, 65 and 7 in his four innings. It’s a sign of how far he’s dipped that Shaw doesn’t even find himself in the mix in India’s second-string squad for the Asian Games. An opportunity at the Duleep Trophy, in that sense, was wasted. Like Shaw, Sarfaraz Khan too didn’t help matters with lean returns; the 48 he made on Saturday his only innings of substance in the tournament. For someone like Washington Sundar, finding his feet after a series of injuries, playing two straight games injury free must have felt like a win. It’s a different matter that he didn’t have too many overs under his belt with the ball, but he batted solidly in the time he spent in the middle, making one wonder why he didn’t bat a lot higher than at No. 7.As Vihari lifted the trophy and South posed for the winning picture, they belted (We won’t break this friendship) – a chartbuster about friendship from the 1970s. It told you why the zonal format was heaps better than players being assigned to random teams such as Red, Green and Blue.”Players were going through the motions with that format. Here, it didn’t feel like we were coming from different states. There was intensity right through, it felt different,” Vihari said after the win.It certainly did.

Man City are brewing Pep's new Busquets in their young "Rodri back-up"

One of Manchester City’s premium January signings was midfielder Nico Gonzalez. The former Barcelona star, who is a product of the esteemed La Masia academy, made the move to the Etihad Stadium for £50m from Portuguese side FC Porto.

So far, the 23-year-old is only a short way into his Citizens career. He has only played eight times so far for Pep Guardiola’s side, starting six times in the Premier League and Champions League.

It was the latter competition in which he scored his first, and to date, only goal for City, although it was a consolation strike against Real Madrid.

Playing as a number six so far for City, Gonzalez was partly signed to help ease the blow of Rodri’s absence, who is still sidelined with injury.

Based on the statistics above, he’s done a pretty good job of covering.

The latest on Rodri's injury recovery at Man City

It has been a tough season for City on the pitch, which has not been helped by the fact that Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, a key player in the middle of the park, has been out injured. The Spaniard picked up a serious knee ligament injury against Arsenal in September and is yet to return.

However, at the start of March, there was some positive news to come out of the City camp surrounding the midfielder’s return to action. Guardiola said he was unsure if Rodri would make it back before the end of the season, but did not rule it out, saying “maybe it’s going to happen”.

Incredibly, the Spain international, who won Euro 2024 last summer, has already returned to training on grass. City’s official account posted a video on social media at the end of February of their star man sprinting and training with a ball at his feet.

So, there are encouraging signs that the Spain international will be back before too long. Even if he doesn’t play in the Premier League this season, then perhaps he will feature in the Club World Cup over the summer.

Either way, there is no doubt he has been a big miss for City. Perhaps Guardiola wishes they had kept one player at the club over the summer, who could have helped City in Rodri’s absence.

Manchester City's in-house Rodri alternative

City have plenty of exciting youngsters on their books, so finding a way to fit them all in the squad is not necessarily easy.

One of the players they loaned out in the summer was midfielder Maximo Perrone, who could have been a perfect Rodri alternative.

Maximo Perrone

The 22-year-old midfielder has spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Como, managed by legendary midfielder Cesc Fabregas. Playing as a number six, Perrone has featured in 18 games this season, grabbing two assists.

He does have an eye for goal, too, as he showed in pre-season. The Argentine youngster scored for City in one of their games, slotting home from close range and showcasing his ability going forward.

Perrone has featured twice for City so far in competitive action, with both appearances coming in their treble-winning season, 2022/23. He played in the FA Cup and Premier League, before going on loan to Las Palmas the following season.

In Spain, the youngster was impressive. He completed the most progressive passes per game by a U21 player across the big five leagues in Europe, with 8.41. That is according to Wyscout via football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

This term, his numbers from FBref are also impressive. He is impressive on the ball, completing 55.69 passes per 90 minutes on average, ranking him in the top 11% of Serie A midfielders. He also averages 2.86 tackles and interceptions each game. It’s easy to see, therefore, why he’s allegedly modelled his game on one of Pep’s favourite ever players; Sergio Busquets.

Football analyst Ben Mattinson said that City should have “used Perrone to manage Rodri’s minutes”, labelling him the “ideal Rodri back-up”, which is backed up well by the stats. He is quality on the ball, which is demanded of him in Guardiola’s side and is defensively astute, too.

Looking ahead to next season, the Citizens might well look to integrate the youngster into the side, to help take the burden off Rodri and provide an excellent alternative.

ICC agrees overseas players cap for new T20 leagues

New ruling will not yet apply to existing leagues such as the ILT20 and MLC

Nagraj Gollapudi and Osman Samiuddin13-Jul-2023

Major League Cricket currently allows six overseas players in a starting XI•Major League Cricket

The ICC has approved a cap of four overseas players – active or retired – and seven local players, which can include Associate players, for all new T20 leagues. The ruling will not initially affect existing tournaments such as the UAE-based International League T20 (ILT20), the US’s Major League Cricket (MLC) and Canada’s Global T20 (GLT20), all of which allow more than four overseas players in the playing XI. These leagues will, however, have to conform to those limits within a reasonable period of time. Additionally, leagues will have to pay a 10% release fee to the home board of each player it hires every season. The new regulation was voted in by cricket’s chief executives, though not without hiccups after intense deliberations over two days in Durban, where the ICC’s AGM ended on Thursday. The recommendation to limit the number of foreign players in a league had come from an ICC working group tasked last year to fight the player drain feared by some Full Members from the mushrooming of T20 leagues, especially in non-Full Member countries. On Tuesday, when the ICC’s chief executives committee (CEC) first met, the original working group proposal which capped overseas players at four and required a minimum of four local players in all leagues was actually voted down 8-6. However, the CEC continued discussions and reconvened on Wednesday to discuss an amended recommendation (redrawn by the working group) through which this new consensus was reached: all new T20 leagues cannot have more than four overseas players in an XI, but they can list Associate players as locals, providing them exposure as well as expanding cricket’s growth in smaller countries. The ICC Board, which met on Thursday, then ratified the CEC recommendation. The development will come as some relief to the ILT20 and MLC, which allow nine and six overseas players respectively in their playing XIs. The Global T20, which has been revived by Cricket Canada and starts later this month, allows five overseas players from Full Member countries in the playing XI alongside minimum of three locals with the remaining slots filled by a combination of players from Associates and Americas. The ILT20 was launched this January, and the MLC’s inaugural season kicks off on Thursday in Dallas. How much time these leagues are given to get within the representation caps of the new regulations will likely be decided on a case by case basis, depending on the commercial agreements each league has in place as well as agreements with franchises on the composition of a starting XI.The ICC working group which has been working on the proposal comprised Wasim Khan (ICC general manager of cricket), along with Arun Dhumal (IPL chairman and BCCI representative on ICC’s CEC), Johnny Grave (CWI CEO), Nick Hockley (Cricket Australia CEO) and Mubashir Usmani (Emirates Cricket Board secretary). It was formed after members began to express concerns at last year’s AGM in Birmingham about the emergence of leagues which, at that time, were under no hard cap restrictions for overseas players.BCCI initially voted against hard capThe Emirates Cricket Board and Cricket Canada both are currently represented at the CEC, which is made up of the 12 Full Members and three Associate Members. During the Tuesday vote, all three Associate members are believed to have voted against the original proposal that would have seen a minimum of four local players in the XI in a T20 league as well as a maximum of four overseas players.ESPNCricinfo understands that the BCCI, NZC, the BCB, SLC and Zimbabwe Cricket joined the Associates in voting against that proposal. The PCB, CWI, Cricket Australia, the ECB and Cricket Ireland, meanwhile, voted for the regulation.Regardless of that first vote, however, there was a resolve among CEC members for some regulation that, according to an official present at the meeting, “protects the sport”. Members agreed that cricket must avoid conditions, for example, that could lead to the kind of breakaway and eventual takeover of the sport that golf has undergone recently. That began with prominent golfers defecting to a parallel circuit, LIV Golf, owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, after being offered unparalleled financial rewards. After a brief, troubled period, the end arrived last month with an agreement forged between the PGA, who hitherto ran golf, and LIV Golf, who had set up the breakaway circuit.Though a commitment to international cricket remains among Full Members, the spread of IPL franchise owners into other leagues worldwide is heralding major change and forming, essentially, a parallel calendar. Four of the six franchises in MLC, cricket’s next attempt to the break into the US market, belong to owners of IPL franchises. Three of those owners have a franchise in ILT20, too. The MLC allows six overseas players in the XI and with salaries as high as USD$175,000 on offer for less than a month, several leading players globally – barring India – have signed up.That league comes hot on the heels of CSA’s SA20, launched earlier this year at the same time as the ILT20 (nine of the 12 franchises across those two leagues are owned by IPL owners) and Canada’s Global T20 which starts on July 20.The working group’s recommendations first came to light last month, after the group met during the World Test Championship (WTC) final between Australia and India at The Oval. The group has been driven by the concern that T20 leagues running parallel in different continents with international and domestic cricket has created scenarios such as that faced by New Zealand and Trent Boult. Boult effectively became a free agent after turning down a national contract last August so that he could shape his time and commitment towards a better work-life balance by playing in leagues.10% release fee proposedThe CEC also accepted the working group’s proposal to have T20 leagues pay a 10% release fee to players’ home boards every season. The 10%, described as a solidarity fee, is a proposed amount and can be negotiated between the host board conducting the league and the player’s home board. The IPL has been paying release fees since its inception – the BCCI pays boards a minimum 10% release fee per player. Other leagues, too, have negotiated similar amounts in bilateral agreements with fellow boards, in order to obtain no-objection player certificates. One concern raised during an earlier meeting in London was whether Associate boards could afford the release fee considering the limited funding they get from the ICC. Passing the onus to the franchise, at least one working group member said, wouldn’t be easy, since no such clause might exist in current contracts. The other solution, the group had suggested, would involve deducting it from the player’s fee. It is not yet clear who will foot the release fee eventually.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Nunez is said to be open to a move to the Middle East, with Liverpool willing to sell for around €60m (£51m/$69m). Amid speculation of a transfer to Al-Hilal, chief executive Esteve Calzada has opened up on his club's transfer plans and insisted Al-Hilal are targeting the world's top stars in a bid to strengthen their squad.

He told BBC Sport: "We are targeting the biggest players. We are very ambitious, but we need to see hunger from the player himself and the transaction needs to work out both ways. The only thing we've been trying to remind players and agents is that yes, we are from Saudi, but we don't print notes here! My role as CEO is to make sure we run the club efficiently, so that we can have the biggest budget possible to have big players, but not at any cost.
