Ben Brown bosses Northants with superb unbeaten hundred

Ben Brown celebrated his century of List A appearances with an exceptional hundred as Hampshire got their Metro Bank One-Day Cup campaign off to a winning start against Northamptonshire Steelbacks.Wicketkeeper Brown had only scored one previous white-ball century – for Sussex in 2021 – in his first 99 games but picked up a career-best 139 not out.Hampshire had been left on 25 for three after Jack White’s opening spell but Brown, with help from Felix Organ’s 59, got the hosts to 285.Eddie Jack and Tom Prest both picked up their professional best figures of four for 29 and three for 41 as the Steelbacks only reached 214 to lose by 71 runsLewis McManus’ decision to bowl first immediately paid dividends with an unplayable new-ball spell from Jack White. He nibbled the fresh white ball around to dump the hosts to 25 for three. He had already made Fletcha Middleton play and miss three times before thumping into the opener’s leg stump with his fifth ball.Nick Gubbins returned a caught-and-bowled with a leading edge and Prest was pouched at second slip, with White ending his six-over spell with three for six.But in sliding to take the Gubbins catch, White damaged his knee which saw him no return.Without him, Brown rebuilt the innings in style. First in a 51-run stand with Toby Albert, but after Albert had skied to mid on and Joe Eckland had been caught at extra cover, more substantially with Organ.Brown already stashed fifty in 62 balls but Organ’s arrival heralded a freer flow that set the tone for the second half of the innings.Brown doesn’t have the stellarest of white-ball records but showed off the very best of his jabby shot-making square of the wicket. His third century of the season came in exactly 100 balls with a controlled hook shot to the boundary which typified his timing.Organ sailed to a 51-ball 59 in a flash to join Brown for 188 runs before he picked out deep midwicket – giving Zaib the third of his three for 60 – with Jack and Kyle Abbott hit sixes and fell at the death.Brown ended up with 139 not out and Hampshire 285 – which had seemed improbable after White’s early burst.Prithvi Shaw and Emilio Gay got the Steelbacks off to a sensational start with 56 put on inside nine overs but their innings was full of good starts which weren’t capitalised on.Jack’s introduction – with Mohammad Abbas forced off after just two overs – was the main catalyst. The teenager dragged Shaw into a drive straight to cover with his second ball, in an otherwise miserly spell.Gay and Ricardo Vasconcelos put on 42 but a swipe off Brad Wheal saw the end of the former and slid Northamptonshire towards a hole.Vasconcelos swept into the deep, Rob Keogh was lbw on the reverse and George Bartlett was caught behind as three wickets fell for 15 runs.McManus gave Jack his second when he spun to deep square leg before Prest added his third when Saif Zaib missed his sweep to fall leg before and Michael Finan holed out on the leg side.Gus Miller scrapped hard for 47, but with the run-rate surging above 10s he skied Jack straight up, before the England under-19 quick completed Hampshire’s victory by clearing up White.

Hoey, Humphreys in Ireland squad for one-off Test against Zimbabwe

Left-arm quick Josh Little, who is currently with LA Knight Riders in the MLC, is a notable absentee from the Test squad

ESPNcricinfo staff17-Jul-2024Uncapped legspinner Gavin Hoey has received his maiden call-up to the Ireland squad for the upcoming one-off Test against Zimbabwe, which begins on July 25 in Belfast. He will bolster a spin attack that includes left-arm fingerspinner Matthew Humphreys and offspinner Andy McBrine.Theo van Woerkom and George Dockrell made way for Humphreys and Hoey who have just one Test cap between them. Seamer Matthew Foster, who was part of the Ireland squad that had toppled Afghanistan for their first Test win in March earlier this year, also didn’t find a place in this squad.Humphreys had a tough initiation into Test cricket, conceding 67 runs in ten overs on debut against Sri Lanka in Galle last year. His recent form, however, is more encouraging: he bagged 15 wickets in two first-class games for Ireland Emerging side against West Indies Academy at an average of 12.60, including two five-wicket hauls, last month.Related

Madande, Bennett, Campbell get maiden Test call-ups for Zimbabwe

“Humphreys made his Test debut in Sri Lanka and found the going difficult against good players of spin out in the subcontinent,” Andrew White, the national selector, said in a statement. “He’d admit himself that he went through a period of a loss of form and maybe a loss of confidence, but he’s worked extremely hard to come back into the reckoning and his performances for Ireland Wolves have been exactly what we were looking for. Obviously in the West Indies last year for Emerging Ireland, then in Nepal, and has now backed it up in the recent series for the Emerging Ireland side against West Indies Academy, where he took 10 wickets. But it’s the consistency he has shown over the last period which has been really pleasing and he very much deserves his call-up.”White also talked up Hoey as an attacking option. “Hoey is a talented legspinner, and his ability to spin the ball both ways gives us a strong wicket-taking option,” he said. “Again, he’s a player that’s been on the radar for a while and can play across all three formats. But this is an opportunity for him to come into the Test squad and get used to the environment.”Left-arm quick Josh Little, who is currently with LA Knight Riders in the USA for the MLC, is a notable absentee from the Test squad. Little has prioritised white-ball cricket, including franchise opportunities, but is passionate about playing Test cricket in the future. While Little is now a regular in T20 leagues around the world, he is yet to make his Test debut.”I sort of blocked off this [next] two years as pretty busy franchise-wise, and then after that I’ll be putting an eye on Test cricket,” Little told . “It’s definitely something I want to do, something I’m passionate about doing. I can guarantee I will play Test cricket at some stage.”I love playing for Ireland, but equally franchise opportunities may not come around forever. It’s tough at times. Cricket Ireland have been nothing but accommodating. Sometimes it is a balancing act.”The one-off Test against Zimbabwe will be PJ Moor’s first international game against his country of birth. Man Utd table £30m bid to sign England "monster" who's better than Hojlund

Manchester United have now made a bid worth £30 million to sign a “monster” striker in this transfer window, according to a recent report.

Man Utd chasing multiple targets as they search for a new striker

The Red Devils are continuing to work on a deal to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, a transfer saga that has lasted all summer so far. United return to pre-season training next week, and the hope is that they can have a deal wrapped up for the Cameroon international by then, but he may not be the only attacking signing either.

Worth £40m less than Gyokeres: Man Utd to offer huge salary to unexpected striker

The Red Devils are beginning to motor in the market…

BySean Markus Clifford Jun 30, 2025

Given the struggles in front of goal last season, it is no surprise that United are in the market for a new striker to replace Rasmus Hojlund. It was reported over the weekend that United have placed Genk striker Tolu Arokodare on their list of targets after he scored 23 goals in 45 matches last season. The forward is not as well known as the likes of Victor Gyokeres and Dušan Vlahović, and for that, he could cost the Red Devils just £20 million this summer.

As well as keeping an eye on Arokodare, United have held talks with the representatives of Moise Kean and have now been offered the chance to sign the striker from Fiorentina.

Fiorentina'sMoiseKeancelebrates after the match

A report states that he could be available for £44 million after finding his form once again back in Italy, but any deal rests on Ruben Amorim, as he has yet to decide whether he wants the Italy international.

Man Utd table £30m bid to sign Ivan Toney

The list of potential new strikers arriving at Old Trafford this summer doesn’t stop with Kean, as according to a report from Spain, Man United have now made an opening bid of €35m (£30m) to sign Ivan Toney from Al-Ahli.

The report states that United have decided to act quickly and make a move for Toney, as they believe his experience in English football and his physical strength could make him a success at Old Trafford.

It goes on to add that contacts between both clubs and the player’s entourage have already taken place, and now United chiefs are confident they can complete a deal for the English international in the coming days, as Toney would welcome a move back to England and the Premier League.

Since moving to Saudi Arabia last summer, Toney, who has been dubbed a “monster” by former Brentford boss Thomas Frank, has scored 23 goals in 30 Saudi Pro League appearances. The 29-year-old also scored a further six in the AFC Champions League Elite campaign.

While Toney, who earns a staggering £400,000 a week, may be older than United’s current first-choice striker Hojlund, the 29-year-old has proven in the Premier League and in Saudi Arabia that he has a better killing instinct than the Denmark international.

During the 2023/24 season, Toney netted 20 league goals in the Premier League, which is far greater than what Hojlund has managed in the last two campaigns combined.

Man Utd now willing to trigger £8m release clause for Casemiro replacement

Manchester United are now willing to trigger the £8m release clause required to sign a “fantastic” Casemiro replacement, according to a report.

Casemiro's future at Man Utd

Widespread recent reports have suggested that Casemiro wants to stay at Man United, following talks with new Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti, which could be viewed as a positive, given that the 33-year-old ended the season very well.

The 33-year-old made it clear he was proud of the way he was able to force his way back into the starting XI, saying: “Of course, you want to win titles, but one of the most successful seasons of my career, without a doubt, was this one. For turning things around, with hard work and dedication.”

However, there have been suggestions that the former Real Madrid man is not the player he once was, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher famously claiming the midfielder should call it a day at the top level and move to the MLS or Saudi Arabia.

According to a report from Spain, United are now looking at replacements for Casemiro, given that the Brazilian is past his best, and they are willing to trigger the £8m release clause in Wilfred Ndidi’s Leicester City contract.

The Red Devils don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to sign Ndidi for such a low fee, having tracked the midfielder for quite some time, and the fact he is experienced in the Premier League means it shouldn’t take too long to adapt to life at Old Trafford.

The 28-year-old is viewed as a long-term replacement for Casemiro, but there is also a possibility the two midfielders are used interchangeably next season, should the Brazil international remain at the club.

Old Trafford chiefs are chasing a new goalkeeper…

ByBrett Worthington Jun 30, 2025 Ndidi could be "fantastic" Casemiro replacement

Should Casemiro decide he wants to stay at Old Trafford, it will be difficult to get him off the books, given that the central midfielder remains under contract for another year, and his £350k-a-week wages could be prohibitive for potential suitors.

Casemiro and Fernandes

However, there are signs that Ndidi could be a solid replacement for the maestro on a long-term basis, having performed very well across some key defensive metrics over the past year, despite Leicester’s relegation from the top flight.

Not only that, but the Nigerian has been lauded as “fantastic” by members of the media, and he is vastly experienced at Premier League level, having made 220 appearances in the competition.

At just £8m, Ndidi could be a bargain addition to Ruben Amorim’s squad, but it doesn’t look like Casemiro will be on the move in the near future.

More exciting than Bornauw: Leeds set to submit bid for £8.5m ace this week

Leeds United have made a fairly fast start to the summer transfer window in their bid to avoid an instant relegation from the Premier League next season.

The Whites secured their first addition last month when they confirmed that they had agreed a deal with free agent forward Lukas Nmecha, who has now officially joined from Wolfsburg upon the expiry of his contract with the Bundesliga outfit.

Daniel Farke has also added to his defensive ranks with the signing of Slovenia international Jaka Bijol on a permanent deal from Serie A side Udinese.

The 26-year-old colossus started 34 matches in the Serie A last season and arrives at Elland Road with experience of playing in a major European league.

Bijol does not look like he will be the only centre-back signing for the West Yorkshire outfit this summer, though, as the club are reportedly set to sign Sebastiaan Bornauw.

Leeds are closing in on a deal to bring the Belgian central defender to Elland Road from Wolfsburg for a reported fee of £5.13m to further bolster their options at the back.

What Sebastiaan Bornauw could bring to Leeds

The 26-year-old titan could provide Farke with a valuable and experienced back-up option at the heart of the defence, behind the likes of Bijol, Joe Rodon, and Pascal Struijk.

Bornauw has played 140 matches in the Bundesliga in his career, which shows that he has plenty of experience in a major European league, and has played 96 times for Wolfsburg in all competitions, including three games in the Champions League.

The imposing 6 foot 3 defender could provide a strong aerial presence for Leeds in both boxes. He won 62% of his aerial duels in the Bundesliga last season and has scored 11 goals in his career in the German top-flight.

This suggests that Bornauw could help Leeds to defend set-pieces as well as being a threat to score from them, which may be one of the reasons that they have decided to snap him up.

However, as you can see in the table above, the Belgian giant has also suffered from injury problems throughout his career in Germany, and missed 18 games last season.

This suggests that Farke may not be able to rely on him to be available week-in-week-out in the Premier League next season, which is further cause to believe that the centre-back could be a signing to improve the depth of the team, rather than as an immediate starter.

Leeds are now reportedly eyeing up another signing from the Bundesliga, on top of Bornauw, who could be an even more exciting signing than the Belgian.

Leeds ready to swoop for Mainz star

According to the Print Edition of BILD (30/06/25), as relayed by LeedsUnitedNews, Leeds United are interested in a deal to sign Mainz defender Anthony Caci in the summer transfer window.

The report claims that both the Whites and fellow Premier League side Fulham are keen to snap the versatile 28-year-old star up in the coming weeks.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It states that Leeds are ahead of the Cottagers in the race to sign the French dynamo, though, because they have the ability to offer him regular first-team football.

The outlet adds that the Championship champions are ready to submit an offer to sign the Mainz ace in the coming days. He is said to be valued at around £8.5m by his current club.

It now remains to be seen, though, whether or not the club’s opening offer for Caci will match that £8.5m valuation, or if they will have to enter further negotiations.

Why Anthony Caci would be an exciting signing for Leeds

Leeds would land a more exciting signing than Bornauw this summer if they manage to get a deal over the line for the versatile Bundesliga gem to bolster their squad.

Borussia Dortmund'sDanielSvenssonin action with 1. FSV Mainz 05's Anthony Caci

Firstly, Caci has even more experience at the top level in Europe, with 107 appearances in Ligue 1 and 97 in the Bundesliga. This means that he has played in more of Europe’s top five leagues and played more matches than the centre-back has, bringing even more experience to Elland Road.

The French star has also only missed two matches through injury since the start of the 2020/21 campaign, which suggests that he is far more likely to be available week-in-week-out in the Premier League next season.

In terms of his actual performances, Caci, who was once dubbed “fantastic” by the Athletic’s Alex Barker, could also be an exciting signing because of the qualities he can provide.

The versatile star, who has mainly played as a left-back in his career but has also played as a right-back, is an attack-minded full-back who could get supporters off their seats with his direct play down the flank, having produced 23 assists for Strasbourg and Mainz combined.

As you can see in the table above, Caci caught the eye with his attacking contributions in the Bundesliga for Mainz last season, ranking highly among his positional peers as a creative threat.

He ended the campaign with 7.88 xA and seven assists to his name, which shows that the £8.5m-rated talent has the ability to consistently create high-quality chances for his teammates.

Leeds United's JuniorFirpoin action with Stoke City's Million Manhoef

This means that he could be an exciting replacement for Junior Firpo, who delivered ten assists in the Championship, as a left-back who can create goals on a regular basis, after the former Leeds star left upon the expiry of his contract at Elland Road.

Caci is a right-footed player, who played as a right-sided full-back for Mainz at times as well, but he has played 65 times as a left-back in his career, with more appearances there than in any other position, which is why he could be the replacement for Firpo.

He'd be the next Chris Wood: Leeds pushing to sign £21m star after Bornauw

Leeds United are set to sign Sebastiaan Bornauw, and are also pushing to land a new striker.

ByDan Emery Jul 1, 2025

Overall, a deal to bring the French dynamo to Elland Road this summer would be more exciting than the one to sign Bornauw, because of his experience, his injury history, and his exciting attacking attributes.

Chris Silverwood has been appointed to his first job in English cricket since he was sacked as England’s head coach, replacing Azhar Mahmood as one of Tom Moody’s assistants at defending champions Oval Invincibles in the Hundred.Silverwood lost his job in the aftermath of England’s 4-0 defeat in Australia in early 2022 but was only out of work for two months, joining Sri Lanka on a two-year contract. That was later extended to include the recent T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the US, but Silverwood resigned shortly after their group-stage exit, citing a reluctance to spend long periods away from home.Related

He will now join Moody’s staff at the Invincibles for 2024, ahead of their – and the Hundred’s – opening matchday on Tuesday, against Birmingham Phoenix. Mahmood resigned from his role when he took up a full-time role with Pakistan earlier this year, and Silverwood will join Matt Walker and Jim Troughton in the men’s coaching staff.James Foster, who lost his job as Northern Superchargers coach last year after they won the wooden spoon in the men’s competition, will also return to the Hundred this summer. He has replaced Paul Collingwood as one of Trevor Bayliss’ assistants at London Spirit, with Collingwood unavailable for the start of the tournament while on Test duty with England. The Spirit have added two more assistant coaches to the backroom staff of their women’s team, who are coached by the Australian Ashley Noffke. Ali Maiden, the Yorkshire men’s assistant coach, and Sunrisers’ Marc Broom have both been appointed, and Maiden could be a contender to replace Noffke when he steps down at the end of this season. The most notable coaching appointment in the Hundred this year saw Andrew Flintoff replace Foster as Superchargers head coach in the men’s competition. His first match as a head coach is against Trent Rockets at Headingley on Friday night.

Even more exciting than Kyogo: Birmingham City set to sign "silky dribbler"

Birmingham City are not slowing down in the summer transfer window in their attempt to bolster their squad ahead of a return to the Championship next season.

The Blues recently confirmed the signings of James Beadle, Tommy Doyle, Bright Osayi-Samuel, and Demarai Gray to improve their options across the pitch.

They are not done there, though, as L’Equipe recently reported that Rennes striker Kyogo Furuhashi is closing in on a move to Birmingham for a fee that could rise as high as £10m, which is how much the French side paid to sign him in January from Celtic.

Kyogo, who failed to score in six matches for Rennes, is not the only player who is reportedly on the verge of making the move to St. Andrew’s to join Chris Davies’ squad.

Birmingham City set to complete double deal

A fresh claim from GIVEMESPORT backs up L’Equipe’s news that the Japanese striker is closing in on a transfer to the Championship side this summer.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The report adds, though, that the League One champions are also set to sign attacking midfielder Kanya Fujimoto on a free transfer, following his exit from Gil Vicente.

GIVEMESPORT claims that both Kyogo and Fujimoto are ‘expected’ to join the club before the end of the weekend, as the Blues close in on a big double deal.

The outlet reveals that Birmingham kept tabs on the former Gil Vicente star throughout the 2024/25 campaign, and they are now making their move for him.

Why Fujimoto is even more exciting than Kyogo for Birmingham

Despite Kyogo being set to sign for £10m and Fujimoto due to arrive on a free transfer, the latter looks to be the most exciting signing out of the two players.

Birmingham are signing Kyogo off the back of a very difficult season for him. As aforementioned, the striker did not score in six league games for Rennes before being immediately sold six months after joining.

The 30-year-old forward also only scored ten goals from 14.14 xG in a dominant Celtic team in the Premiership during the first half of the season, which shows that he significantly underperformed in front of goal.

This shows that Birmingham are spending a huge fee on a player who is declining and heading into the latter stages of his career, which is a big risk because there is a chance that his form does not improve.

Whereas, as you can see in the table above, Fujimoto is arriving at the club off the back of a very impressive season with Gil Vicente in the Portuguese top-flight.

At the age of 26, he is coming into the prime years of his career and appears to be at the top of his game, ranking highly among his positional peers as both a scorer and a creator of goals in Portugal.

Fujimoto was once described as a “silky dribbler who’s dangerous in the pockets behind the striker” by analyst Ben Mattinson, and his statistics back that up, as he ranked highly as a dribbler to go along with his goal contributions.

The Japanese ace is a midfielder who can score and assist goals efficiently, outperforming his xG, and has the performances to suggest that he can hit the ground running at St. Andrew’s.

More career goals than Tavernier: Rangers eyeing 'legendary' Igamane upgrade

Rangers are almost back in action and it’s a particularly exciting time for the new man in the Ibrox dug-out Russell Martin.

He will take charge of the Gers for the very first time in a pre-season friendly on Sunday, with last season’s Belgian Pro League runners-up in town, and a fair few players could be debuting in light blue.

Southampton manager Russell Martin.

Lyall Cameron, Max Aarons, Joe Rothwell and Emmanuel Fernandez have all arrived in Govan so far this summer, but could the biggest name of the lot be on his way to Glasgow’s West End soon?

The latest on Rangers' striker search

It appears as though all three Rangers players who scored more than six goals across all competitions last season could depart.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Václav Černý won’t be back, he has returned to Wolfsburg following his loan, while Cyriel Dessers is seemingly on his way to AEK Athens, if the two clubs can agree a fee, with Rangers holding out for £5m, as relayed by The National.

The biggest departure of them all though, could be Hamza Igamane, who is reportedly being targeted by Ligue 1 side Lille, in a deal which could be worth as much as £20m, thereby becoming Rangers’ all-time record sale.

Martin McMillan of the Glasgow Times claims that les Dogues have put their interest in the Moroccan striker ‘on hold’, but it does appear more likely than not that Igamane will be sold this summer, either ending up at Stade Pierre-Mauroy or elsewhere.

So, as Martin searches for attacking reinforcements, Mark Pirie of the Daily Record has reiterated Rangers’ interest in Jamie Vardy, stating that the Glasgow giants remain ‘keen’ on a move, citing the Daily Mail.

Meantime, Mike McGrath of the Telegraph has previously documented that, wherever he goes, Vardy wants to be a ‘regular starter’ and, well, given Rangers’ need for a centre-forward right now, with a Champions League tie against Panathinaikos less than three weeks away, the veteran would surely be guaranteed game time from the jump.

How Jamie Vardy would improve Rangers

Despite the fact he is now 38 years old, Vardy still scored ten goals last season, made all the more impressive by the fact he was playing for a generally hopeless Leicester City side, who were relegated from the Premier League.

By netting against Bournemouth in May, Vardy took his tally to 200 goals in 500 appearances for Leicester, which is very pleasing for fans of symmetry. In total, the veteran has scored 237 club career goals at professional level, ahead of what free-scoring Rangers skipper James Tavernier (138 career goals) has achieved to date.

His most recent manager at the Foxes, Ruud van Nistelrooy, labelled him a “living legend”, while Rob Tanner of the Athletic believes he is, unquestionably, Leicester’s greatest-ever player.

So, let’s assess how his statistics compare to Igamane, a player 16 years his junior, but one he could soon be replacing.

As the table outlines, Igamane did score six more goals than Vardy last season, while the Moroccan came out on top when it came to shots, shots on target and touches per 90, which all makes sense when you think about it.

Igamane was playing for a dominant team in, according to Global Football Rankings, the 43rd strongest league on the planet.

In complete contrast, Vardy was plying his trade for one of the worst teams in the Premier League, so was very much feeding off scraps, underlined by his miserly 20 touches per 90, making his tally of ten goals actually incredibly impressive.

The season before last, when Leicester were in the EFL Championship, still ranked all the way up at 11th by the aforementioned Global Football Rankings, Vardy scored 20 goals in all competitions, so just imagine how many he would get in the Premiership.

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy and his recruitment team are attempting to navigate a competitive summer transfer market, with a few key items on the agenda for new manager Thomas Frank ahead of a vital 2025/2026 campaign.

Their qualification for next season’s Champions League comes as an almighty boost for the Lilywhites when it comes to bringing in fresh squad upgrades.

Spurs are set for a significant financial windfall after booking their place in Europe’s most prestigious competition, and they’ve already put some of it to good use by sealing a cut-price £30 million permanent deal for Mathys Tel.

Tel won’t be their only forward signing either, with Tottenham on the lookout for fresh wingers who could replace current club captain Son Heung-min, who may well have already played his last competitive game for them.

“Son could very well have played his last game for Tottenham, and well, if it was the Europa League final, it would be fitting,” said journalist Graeme Bailey to TBR Football recently.

“I am told he still believes he is more than capable of recapturing his best form – but Spurs are ready to make moves this summer and Son leaving could materialise.”

West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, Man City star Jack Grealish, Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, Southampton’s Tyler Dibling and Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo have all been linked with moves to north London in the past week, as Levy and technical director Johan Lange assess which deal is best suited to the club.

One area of the squad you’d think would be far down their priority list, in terms of strengthening, is at full-back.

Destiny Udogie, Pedro Porro, Djed Spence, Ben Davies and Archie Gray – who can play right-back – are all available for Frank to utilise on the flanks, but Spurs are aware of their need for more locally trained players.to comply with Champions League squad rules.

They currently have just one club-trained player in goalkeeper Brandon Austin when they need to register four players who suit that criteria, otherwise their 25-man Champions League squad is in danger of becoming a 22-man one (Alasdair Gold).

Tottenham could make "clever" signing in former defender Kyle Walker-Peters

Bearing this in mind, Levy and co are contemplating a “clever” move to re-sign former defender and soon-to-be free agent, Kyle Walker-Peters, to fill one of the club-trained player spots.

The Englishman would count as a club-trained player as he came through the Hotspur Way academy, and according to reliable journalist Alasdair Gold, Walker-Peters himself is pretty keen on a move back to Tottenham.

“The one I do believe they have considered for this summer is Kyle Walker-Peters,” he said on the Gold and Guest talk Tottenham podcast.

“He’s had a terrific career, over 200 appearances for Southampton, a Premier League regular for a lot of that. I think he has a couple of England caps as well.

“On one side, the full-back spots are pretty busy right now, there are a lot of full-backs there, but as the window goes on, if he’s not been snapped up yet, I can see it as a clever solution, he’s club-trained, he can play on both sides, and from my understanding I think he would love to come back to Spurs as well, they’re his boyhood club.”

The 28-year-old would be an experienced option at zero cost with his deal expiring in just nine days, but it would surely require one of the other full-backs to head out on loan or depart the club permanently.

With Spence able to play at left-back when required, perhaps the best solution would be to part company with Davies for a small fee. The Welshman has proved a reliable squad member and faithful servant over the course of his long stay at Tottenham, but with the 96-cap international’s contract expiring next summer, it could be a smart business decision.
