Alex Bregman's Contract Deferral Amount Revealed

Upon signing a massive contract with the Boston Red Sox, it was reported soon after that a significant portion of Alex Bregman's money would be deferred. The deal, before deferrals, is for three years, $120 million, with opt outs.

Now, we know the amount: of Bregman's annual salary will be deferred, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. So he'll earn $20 million, with another $20 million deferred each year.

A few days ago, ESPN's Buster Olney reported that the present value was to be valued at around $90 million over the three years. Using the current MLB luxury tax discount rate of 4.43%, that likely means the deferrals will be paid out over the three years following the end of the contract ($120 million over six years, compounded annually at 4.43%, resulting in a present value of $92.5 million).

So, while the Red Sox are thought to have offered $10 million more per year than any other remaining team, in present value their offer was about $30 million per year.

Deferrals are not new in baseball, but the scale at which teams are utilizing them is growing. Shohei Ohtani's huge contract is famously deferred, which brings it from $700 million to a present value of more like $540 million. Bregman's contract is 50% deferred, Ohtani's is a whopping 97% deferred.

Deferrals allow teams to reduce their luxury tax bill, giving them greater flexibility to build competitive rosters around expensive players. For a team like the Red Sox, it helped them land a huge star, making them more competitive without having to handcuff their desire to keep adding more.

For players, it gives them security of earnings, potentially even securing cash flow beyond their playing years. For title-hungry stars, it also lets them play for teams that can compete from a place of financial leverage without having to give up as much of their own earnings.

Tigers president Scott Harris said the team made a, "competitive offer," to Bregman but did not indicate if it included deferrals or not.

Bregman is set to hold an introductory press conference with the Red Sox Sunday morning.

Man Utd, Real Madrid and Barcelona on alert as bargain release clause for 16-year-old already shining in Germany is revealed

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have been put on high alert after 16-year-old Hertha Berlin sensation Kennet Eichhorn's release clause was revealed. Eichhorn has created history in Germany after establishing himself in the first team and is expected to be on the radar of Europe's elite next summer.

  • Eichhorn has already created history in Germany

After an impressive pre-season, Eichhorn has made rapid strides at Hertha. Having signed his first professional contract just weeks before turning 16, he made his professional debut on the second matchday of the 2. Bundesliga, Germany's second division, coming on as a substitute against Karlsruhe. In the process, he became the youngest player ever in the history of the league, aged just 16 years and 14 days. Just over a month later, he created further history, becoming the youngest player to ever start a game in 2. Bundesliga after being named in the XI for the match against Hannover. Having been with Hertha's youth academy since his Under-9 days, Eichhorn is also the youngest professional in the club's entire history.

While Eichhorn’s talent is undeniable, head coach Stefan Leitl was forced to turn to the teenage prodigy after his squad – particularly the midfield – had been ravaged by injuries for months. However, as things stand, Eichhorn is the only midfielder with a guaranteed role in the starting XI, with the rest of the squad fighting for their spots. "We're happy that everyone is available again. We'll decide tomorrow after the final training session. Let's put it this way: who will play alongside Kennet Eichhorn in midfield?" said Leitl last month. The Bernau bei Berlin-born midfielder has already started in eight of the 10 games he has featured in this season.

Eichhorn on the radar of Europe's elite as release clause is revealed

His performances have not gone unnoticed, despite spending just over three months with Hertha's senior squad. Numerous reports have already mentioned about the interest from some of Bundesliga's biggest clubs such as Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen. Not too long ago, representatives from Bayern, Dortmund and Leipzig – including sporting director Marcel Schafer and sporting co-ordinator Daniel Baier – were in attendance for one of Hertha's games. All three clubs are eager to sign him as early as next summer, with Leipzig showing the strongest interest.

"It's an unprecedented market," an insider revealed to , with Premier League giants Manchester United and Arsenal, La Liga rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona, as well as Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain keeping a keen eye on Eichhorn's development.

According to , Eichhorn's contract – which runs until 2029 – has a release clause which will undoubtedly tempt Europe's biggest clubs. Per the report, said release clause will come into effect next summer, with the exact amount dependent on several factors. The upper range is believed to be around €10–12 million (£9-11m/$12-$14m) – a figure applicable, for instance, to clubs competing in the Champions League. The final valuation will vary based on whether Hertha earn a promotion to the Bundesliga, the destination country, and the level of competition the buying club participates in.

For now, Eichhorn’s camp remains relaxed about his future. Their priority is ensuring the youngster continues to receive regular playing time to aid his development. No negotiations are currently underway with any club, though discussions are expected to take place next summer.

  • Felix Kroos urges Eichhorn to stay at Hertha BSC

Eichhorn's performances and his style of play have drawn early comparisons to Germany and Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos, whom he idolises. Standing at 1.86m, he operates deeper in the midfield with an exceptional passing range and an ability to orchestrate the tempo. His physique also allows him to be a physically imposing midfielder capable of breaking plays.

Toni Kroos' brother Felix, who has played in the Bundesliga, recently urged Eichhorn to not rush into any decisions regarding his future. “The way Eichhorn plays is remarkable. He radiates calm, gains valuable experience, and is allowed to make mistakes," he said. "He has the quality, yet he will sometimes sit out. You have to give such a young player a break because it’s a lot for the mind.

“That’s the beauty of football: there isn’t one right path, no magic formula. Still, Eichhorn, at 16, is a special case and should remain in his familiar environment. That’s what brought him to where he is now. A move to Bayern or Dortmund in the next two to four years would be too early. I hope he develops at Hertha for a few more years. Ultimately, you can’t plan anything in football.

“If it goes well and Eichhorn stays another two or three years, those €6 million could become €60 million. That would be even better for the books in Berlin. And with the sums circulating today, six million is too little anyway.”

    What next for Eichhorn?

After accumulating five yellow cards, Eichhorn will sit out of Hertha's next game against Eintracht Braunschweig on November 21 due to suspension. Die Alte Dame are currently in eighth position with 20 points from 12 games.

Sean Dyche fuming at Bruno Fernandes moment in Man Utd draw at Nottingham Forest

Amad Diallo’s delightful volley continued Manchester United’s unbeaten run and extended Sean Dyche’s wait for his first Premier League win as Nottingham Forest manager.

United arrived on a run of three straight wins and Diallo’s late volley rescued a 2-2 draw, which was probably a fair result at the end of a helter-skelter encounter that the Red Devils went ahead in, albeit under controversial circumstances.

The City Ground faithful were left furioius at the decision to award the corner from which Casemiro headed home the opening goal, and Dyche also highlighted Bruno Fernandes’ placement of the ball outside the quadrant, speaking to Sky Sports.

“It’s not inconclusive, I’ve seen it back,” the 54 year-old said afer Nicolo Savona was adjudged to have taken the ball out of play.

He continued: “Funny enough I was talking to the powers at be, the referees, about the quadrant. We all watch it, you can see the ball is outside the quadrant from 80 yards away, but they allow it because it’s one millimetre with the ball hanging over the line, a bit like the goal line technology.

“So apparently today the assistant referee can see 70, 80 yards away, it’s got to change.”

Dyche’s men returned after half-time interval with the bit between their teeth and levelled three minutes after the restart. Substitute Yates clipped over a cross from the right and Gibbs-White held off Diallo to get away a header that crept inside the far post.

It looked like Savona would have the last laugh too, coolly scoring in the 50th minute. Another cross from the right took a deflection and looped up, with the ball bundled on as Jesus challenged with United players. The Italian was the beneficiary, taking a touch and finishing from six yards.

United tried to level and Fernandes came closest, seeing a hopeful long-range strike skip off the turf and hit the far post. Casemiro just failed to turn home the rebound.

Manchester United have found their next Amad

Jesus headed into the side-netting and Hudson-Odoi went close as Forest pushed to settle things, only for Diallo’s moment of magic to draw United level in the 81st minute.

Forest failed to effectively clear a corner and the Ivory Coast international unleashed a wonderful left-footed volley from the edge of the box that flew past Sels, sparking bedlam in the away end.

The goal was given after a VAR check and United pushed hardest for a winner, with Murillo stopping Diallo snatching victory in stoppage time.

Mason Crane's six turn the tables on Lancashire

Glamorgan 261 and 95 for 2 (Carlson 43*, Anderson 2-20) vs Lancashire A career-best 6 for 19 by Mason Crane led a superb bowling effort from Glamorgan that has put the visitors firmly in the ascendancy after two days at Emirates Old Trafford.Having been bowled out for 261 in their first innings of this Rothesay County Championship division two promotion battle, second-placed Glamorgan hit back strongly to dismiss fourth-placed Lancashire for 137 before reaching the close on 95 for 2 in their second innings to lead by 219 runs. The day turned Glamorgan’s way during a dramatic afternoon session following the introduction of Crane into the attack. The leg spinner ran through the Lancashire middle and lower order after producing an outstanding 10.3 over spell from the James Anderson End that was chiefly responsible for the hosts losing their last seven wickets for 30 runs.Anderson, on his 43rd birthday, took two early wickets in one over when Glamorgan began their second innings but a steadying partnership of 71 between Sam Northeast and Kiran Carlson has the visitors well-placed to push home their strong advantage tomorrow.Following a delay of one hour due to rain, Lancashire took just eight deliveries to wrap up the Glamorgan first innings for the addition of one run to their overnight score of 260 for 8, Tom Bailey trapping Crane lbw for 9 and Anderson having Ned Leonard caught behind for 4.In testing, seaming conditions Asitha Fernando had early reward trapping Luke Wells lbw for 2 and it took some determined and, at times, dogged batting from Keaton Jennings and Josh Bohannon in a partnership of 45 to prevent further damage to the Lancashire reply. It took a superb one-handed catch by Asa Tribe at bat-pad to dismiss Jennings for 28 off spinner Ben Kellaway shortly before lunch and Glamorgan made further inroads soon after the break, Fernando rewarded for a fine spell when having Bohannon lbw for 32.The introduction of Crane into the attack transformed the afternoon as the leg spinner produced a devastating burst of 5 for 12 in 41 balls on a wicket that has taken spin from the start to put the visitors firmly in charge. If the first of the five was a touch fortunate, Marcus Harris hitting a full toss to Kellaway at mid-on for 30, the rest were a result of some excellent leg spin that the Lancashire batters failed to master.Phil Salt edged behind for 8, Matty Hurst (21) top-edged a sweep that deflected off wicketkeeper Chris Cooke to Colin Ingram at slip, Chris Green drove a catch back to the bowler for 2 while Tom Hartley was lbw three balls later. That left Lancashire reeling on 132 for 8 by the tea interval and Glamorgan wrapped up the innings five overs after the break when Fernando gained a third lbw verdict against Bailey and Crane took his sixth after George Balderson chipped to Kiran Carlson at midwicket.Leading by 119 runs, Glamorgan lost Zain ul Hassan bowled for 12 shouldering arms to Anderson who then took a smart, tumbling catch off his own bowling five balls later to dismiss Tribe for 11.Northeast (26 not out) and Carlson (43 not out) steadied matters with their unbroken partnership during the final hour of the day to leave Glamorgan in a strong position going into day three.

Not just Botman & Burn: Howe must drop Newcastle flop who lost 75% duels

Newcastle United head into the final international break of 2025 two points above the relegation zone in the Premier League after their 3-1 defeat to Brentford on Sunday.

The Magpies took the lead in the match, thanks to a brilliant goal from winger Harvey Barnes, but they were unable to press on and secure all three points.

Brentford went on to score three times after that opener from the English forward, and Eddie Howe will surely be disappointed with the defending that was on display from his players, notably Sven Botman and Dan Burn.

Why Newcastle should drop Sven Botman and Dan Burn

When Newcastle face Manchester City on the other side of the international break, the English head coach should drop both of those players from the starting line-up, although Burn has done the job for him by being sent off.

The makeshift left-back was given a second yellow card for giving away the penalty for Brentford’s second goal, as his lack of pace saw him caught out from a ball over the top, and a swing of the boot at the forward gave the referee little choice.

Burn was not the only underperformer in the defence, though, as Botman was also caught out, albeit via a deflection from Malick Thiaw, for the third goal of the game.

The Dutch centre-back, per Sofascore, lost four of his five aerial duels and did not win a single tackle during his time on the pitch, which was over 100 minutes with added time, which shows that Brentford’s players found it too easy to play against him.

Burn and Botman are not the only players who could lose their place in the starting line-up for the clash with City, as Sandro Tonali also struggled in midfield.

Why Newcastle should drop Sandro Tonali

The Italy international has been in fantastic form for the Magpies in the Premier League this season. He has been an engine in the middle of the park for Howe and has put in some brilliant displays.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Tonali has won 53% of his duels in the Premier League so far this season, per Sofascore, and created 1.3 chances per game for his teammates, but he was a shadow of his usual self in his performance against Brentford.

The former AC Milan midfielder earned a 4/10 player rating from Newcastle World for his display in the middle of the park against the Bees, and he was substituted for Joe Willock in the 77th minute, as part of a quadruple change by the manager.

Tonali was not at his best in the middle of the park and was too easy for the Brentford players to play against, as was the case with Botman, as he lost 75% (3/4) of his duels in the game.

As you can see in the table above, the Italy international was nowhere near his usual standards in midfield for the Magpies, as he failed to make much of an impact in or out of possession.

These statistics show that he did not offer enough quality on the ball as a creative force with his passing, whilst the midfielder was also beaten too easily in physical duels.

Therefore, Howe could ruthlessly drop the 4/10 flop from the starting line-up when they face Manchester City after the international break, with Burn missing out through suspension and Botman also potentially dropped for his dismal performance.

Rohl drops Rangers team news hint by recalling youth international before Brann

Danny Rohl has wasted no time before making some changes at Rangers and has already welcomed one player back into the fold to reverse one of Russell Martin’s decisions.

Rohl: Rangers already have "clear" idea ahead of Brann

After nothing short of a disastrous season so far, Rangers enter their game against Brann in the Europa League in desperate need of victory on Danny Rohl’s debut.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss has replaced Russell Martin to end the 49ers’ search for a manager, which saw both Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat lead the race before Rohl took the job.

Rohl already gets January promise from Rangers board as Cavenagh eyes two moves

The new Rangers boss could welcome some key upgrades…

By

Oct 23, 2025

It’s been a big week for the young manager as he prepares for his first game in charge, but he admitted that his players already have a “clear” idea of what he wants.

That said, there’s no denying that it won’t be an easy fix at Ibrox this season and several changes are undoubtedly needed. Alas, for the time being, Rohl will have no choice but to make those changes using the current squad and that has already seen one player make his return to the fold.

Rohl drops major team news hint

In his first big change, Rohl has recalled Clinton Nsiala to first-team training for the first time since Martin told the France youth international he could leave the club in the summer.

Nsiala’s re-call represents the clean slate that the Gers are now operating with under Rohl and one that several stars should use to make their mark for the first time in Scotland.

It would certainly be quite the move if Nsiala came in for his first appearance of the season in the Europa League and his first game since the quarter-final of the competition in the last campaign, but it’s one that Rohl could make.

The return of the defender could prove to be an early masterstroke, too. Whilst he didn’t feature under Martin, he started nine games in the Scottish Premiership last season and lost just once. Given Rangers’ defensive problems in the current campaign and how he’s taken previous opportunities, it’s only right that a return is on the cards.

With Brann tonight and Kilmarnock at the weekend, it’s the type of week which may steer Rangers in the right direction for the first time this season.

Kenan Yildiz on the move? Juventus fail to convince young star to sign contract extension in transfer boost for Arsenal, Chelsea and Real Madrid

Kenan Yildiz’s future at Juventus is in serious doubt, with contract talks between the young Turkish forward and the club put on hold after months of negotiations. Top European giants, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Real Madrid, are now ready to move for the 20-year-old. The German-born, who joined the Old Lady in 2022, is under contract with the Serie A side until 2029.

Juventus fail to reach extension agreement

According to , Damien Comolli, who was appointed CEO of the club this week, and Yildiz’s representatives have failed to find an agreement over a new deal. The player’s camp reportedly wants a pay rise that reflects his growing role at the club, but the Serie A giants are unwilling to match the requested salary. Yildiz is seeking a contract that would bring him closer to the top earners in the squad, closer to the €6 million, but the difference in valuation has led to a complete standstill in negotiations after a recent meeting between both sides.

The Turkish star, who joined Juventus from Bayern Munich on a free transfer in 2022, currently earns €1.7m, a fraction of what many of his teammates make despite becoming one of the team’s brightest talents this season.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesPremier League giants and Madrid circling

Chelsea are among the first to target the youngster. The Blues reportedly made a €67 million (£59m/$77.5m) bid for Yildiz last July, which was turned down, but they remain interested and are expected to return next summer. Premier League rivals Arsenal have also joined the race, while La Liga leaders Real Madrid are monitoring the situation closely. Reports in Spain suggest Yildiz’s price tag could exceed €100m (£88m/$116m) if a bidding war breaks out between the three clubs next summer. His contract runs until 2029, giving Juventus some leverage, but the breakdown in talks could open the door for negotiations with other clubs.

Last month, Los Blancos coach Xabi Alonso had publicly expressed his admiration for Yildiz, calling him one of the most promising players in Europe. Ahead of Juventus’s Champions League clash against Madrid, the Spaniard had said: "[Juventus] have very good players, and Yildiz is one of them. He's had a fantastic development. I know him. He was at Bayern Munich when I was there. Seeing his progress makes me very happy."

According to agent Giovanni Branchini, the Madrid boss even told the management he would be willing to sell 'anyone except Kylian Mbappe' if it meant signing the Turkish forward.

Yildiz's former teammate urges him to come to Premier League

Amid the contract stand-off, Yildiz’s former Juventus teammate Nicolo Savona, who is now at Nottingham Forest, recently advised the midfielder to consider joining him in England as he weighs up his next move. “I would recommend the Premier League to all the kids who love football, it would be difficult to say otherwise. So also to Kenan and any of his teammates.” Savona told .

Getty ImagesYildiz’s fatigue concerns amid Juventus' struggles

Meanwhile, Juventus continue to struggle this season. The Turin side parted ways with coach Igor Tudor after an eight-game winless streak and brought in former Italy manager Luciano Spalletti as his replacement. The new boss has managed just one win in his first three games, with Juventus sitting sixth in the Serie A table.

Despite the team’s struggles, Yildiz has been one of the few positives. The Turkish international has featured in 14 matches across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing four assists in 1,155 minutes.

Spalletti acknowledged after the goalless draw with Torino that Yildiz might be showing signs of fatigue but insisted he has no plans to rest him. “It could be a fair impression, playing while tired… but I’ll make him play again and keep him there. He can relax.”

The Serie A giants will visit Fiorentina at the Stadio Franchi after the international break, hoping to steady their season.

Compton doubles up as Kent bat out for draw

Kent 445 for 8 (Compton 221, Finch 54*) drew with Leicestershire 471 (Rehan 119, Patel 85) The Rothesay County Championship match between Division Two leaders Leicestershire and Kent at Canterbury ended in a draw, after the hosts reached 445 for eight on day four, trailing by 24 when bad light stopped play.Ben Compton hit a career-best 221 and Harry Finch made 54 not out, while Rehan Ahmed three for 134, but the chances of a positive result were effectively neutered on day three, when a mere 9.5 overs were bowled.Leicestershire remain top of the table, while Kent stay bottom.Conditions were significantly better on Friday morning but as soon as Kent passed the follow-on target of 321 a draw seemed inevitable. The nightwatch, George Garrett, survived 67 balls spread across days two, three and four but he was the first man out when he edged Logan van Beek to Louis Kimber for 10.The first shot of Ben Dawkins’ first-class career was a stylish drive that might have gone for four but for the slope, but he was out for seven, inside-edging Ben Green behind.Compton, 111 not out overnight, reached 150 in the penultimate over of the session when he cut Tom Scriven for four and Kent eased to 307 for four at lunch.Scriven subsequently had Joey Evison caught behind for 38, but an elegant sweep off Rehan saw Compton to 200. He took a single off Patel to pass his previous highest score of 217 and was finally out when he came down the wicket to Rehan and was stumped.Rehan then had Matt Parkinson lbw for two and Kent were 429 for eight at tea, after which Finch cover-drove Rishi Patel to bring up his half-century, but play was suspended at 4.40pm and both sides looked as eager as the umpires to shake hands on the draw.

Ilkay Gundogan picks his favourite manager out of Guardiola and Klopp

Former Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has picked his favourite manager out of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, having achieved great success playing under both.

A glittering career for Gundogan under great managers

The German is now very much in the autumn of his career, but he has arguably been one of the most successful and influential midfielders of his generation.

Gundogan won five Premier League titles and one Champions League crown with City under Guardiola, during the peak of his powers, but he also tasted Bundesliga title glory alongside Klopp in his younger days at Borussia Dortmund.

Guardiola and Klopp are right up with the best managers of the past 20 years, and among the longest-serving coaches in Premier League history, with the pair huge characters who enjoyed a great rivalry during their respective spells in charge of City and Liverpool.

Everyone will have their favourite out of the two, with some preferring the Spaniard’s tactical genius and others liking Klopp’s more free-flowing style, but what about Gundogan?

Gundogan picks between Guardiola and Klopp

Speaking to The Athletic, Gundogan gave Guardiola the edge over Klopp, due to achieving so much trophy-winning success with him in a City shirt.

This is clearly a tough choice for Gundogan, with the 34-year-old an enormous admirer of two people who have had an incredible impact on him as a player, but it does feel right to go with Guardiola, given their dominance of English football together with City.

As mentioned, Gundogan was a younger player with Klopp at Dortmund, scoring a penalty in the 2013 Champions League final defeat to Bayern Munich, but he truly came into own as a player at the Etihad, becoming one of the first names on the team sheet in a squad littered with world-class footballers.
