England, Pakistan begin building effort towards postponed T20 World Cup

What a difference a session makes to the outlook of a tour. It was one Day 4 session in the first Test at Old Trafford that sketched the wafer-thin border between triumph and disaster for England and Pakistan; a passage of play that – in the wake of a washed-out second Test – denied the visitors a shot at a first series win in England in 24 years, and set up the hosts for their first against Pakistan anywhere in a decade. And who knows how much the sting of that failure will linger for Pakistan as they enter the T20 leg of their tour. In ordinary times, a preceding Test series might be rendered irrelevant, but on a tour of close-knit bubbles, isolation protocols and empty stadiums, it might actually be Pakistan’s only true frame of reference. For England, it’s a strikingly different scenario. A wholly different squad, even down to the management staff, will rock up to Manchester for this leg of their bio-secure summer, and while it might appear that a touch of insouciance has crept into England’s white-ball cricket since they lifted the ODI World Cup last year, with two T20 World Cups in the next two years, there’s no reason for that to extend to the shortest format.Babar Azam and Eoin Morgan pose with the series trophy•Getty Images

Currently ranked behind only Australia in T20s, Eoin Morgan’s side have an opportunity to work up handy white-ball momentum before Australia rock up for three T20Is and three ODIs next month, although they will once again be lacking a host of shoo-in names with the likes of Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Jofra Archer all out of contention after their time in the Test bubble – not to mention Joe Root, who is set to feature for Yorkshire in the Blast in a bid to restate his credentials in the shortest format.England’s most recent form reference is a slightly bonkers T20I series against South Africa in February, where all three T20Is went down to the final over and they just about held their nerve to eke out a 2-1 series win. It kept alive an unbeaten T20I series run that extends to more than two years now, and if they can keep that going over the next month or so, England could truly think of this as, given the circumstances, just about the ideal home season. If their memories stretch that far, Pakistan would do well to look upon a tour of England four years ago. Well beaten in the ODI series, they approached the one-off T20 with a certain elan that would set the gold standard for T20I cricket in the three years to follow, as they stormed to the World No.1 ranking and put distance between themselves and the rest. England were thrashed by nine wickets, commencing a run from Pakistan which would see them win 29 of 33 T20Is, including 11 consecutive series triumphs. They’ve come back down to earth with an unseemly splat in the 18 months since – that No.1 ranking is certainly long gone – but a younger side that still retains several characters from those heady days may wonder if they can hit the restart button and go again once more. Babar Azam, now leading the side, and the world T20 batsman rankings, has another opportunity to put his stamp on a team one imagines he’ll feature in for much of the next decade. A series win here would certainly be the most gratifying way to have the last laugh.Mohammad Rizwan gets a piggyback from Shaheen Shah Afridi•Getty Images

Tom Banton’s breathtaking form for Somerset in the 2019 Blast catapulted him into the national team, but in his (admittedly very brief) stint at the top, it hasn’t quite clicked for him. Fifty-six runs in three T20Is against New Zealand were followed by an underwhelming ODI start, and while eight international innings is no kind of sample size, his most recent T20 numbers don’t make the best reading either. The PSL was an immense struggle for him, managing just 74 runs at the top of the innings – 34 of them in one rain-curtailed 12-over match – even as his opener partner Kamran Akmal finished as the seventh-highest runscorer in the league. He ended up being benched, and while the Old Trafford surface won’t quite be the same as any in Pakistan, he will face some of the bowlers who troubled him there. It’s one to watch out for.ALSO READ: Eoin Morgan challenges young players to seize World Cup rolesBanton’s Peshawar Zalmi teammate Haider Ali was one of Pakistan’s few PSL success stories with the bat, with 239 runs at a strike rate a shade under 160. It followed on from a decent World Cup but it’s not just the numbers when it comes to the 19-year old. The obviously freakish talent, both as striker and stroker of the ball, has led him to reap rewards in T20 cricket as well as first-class. He said recently his batting idol was Rohit Sharma, and while any comparisons would be ludicrous, you can see why the Indian opener is the ideal cricketer for Haider to seek to emulate. The T20 World Cup’s postponement might prove ideal both for him and Pakistan, for if he is to emulate his domestic success on the international stage, he’d be among the first names on the team sheet.

With Jason Roy ruled out by a side strain, Dawid Malan appears set to get another opportunity, having scored 103 not out from 51 balls in his last-but-one outing in New Zealand. Old Trafford has historically favoured spin bowling, so Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid are set to resume their fruitful alliance. England have a wealth of all-round options to bulk out their middle order, but Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan and Sam Billings, who enjoyed a productive run against Ireland, may need to provide the batting ballast.England (possible): 1 Tom Banton 2 Jonny Bairstow (wk) 3 Dawid Malan 4 Eoin Morgan (capt) 5 Sam Billings 6 Moeen Ali 7 Tom Curran 8 Dawid Willey 9 Chris Jordan 10 Adil Rashid 11 Saqib MahmoodA dearth of spinners isn’t exactly a problem for Pakistan, with Shadab Khan one of as many as five potential options Pakistan could line up with. Rizwan’s brilliant Test series may be enough for him to retain his T20 slot even with Sarfaraz Ahmed poised to make a first appearance for Pakistan in nearly a year.Pakistan (possible): 1 Babar Azam (capt), 2 Fakhar Zaman, 3 Shadab Khan, 4 Haider Ali, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Mohammad Rizwan/Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), 7 Iftikhar Ahmed, 8 Imad Wasim, 9 Mohammad Amir, 10 Wahab Riaz, 11 Shaheen Afridi

In T20s at Old Trafford since 2017, the overall run rate has been 7.98 runs per over, suggesting 160 might be a par score. Rain is expected through much of the day, but should clear in good time for the game to get underway at 6pm. Persistent rain over the week will mean conditions are damp, which could result in a slow outfield. It wouldn’t be too surprising to see Pakistan open with a spinner, as they did to great success while on that jolly T20 streak.

Stats and trivia

  • Shoaib Malik is 108 runs away from becoming the first non-West Indian to score 10,000 T20 runs. He needs 31 more to surpass Brendon McCullum, who sits on 9,922.
  • In all T20s at Old Trafford since 2017, spinners have conceded 1.3 fewer runs per over than seamers. Their economy rate is 7.27, while seamers have seen their overs go for 8.57.

“This is another opportunity for guys who potentially sit outside that 15 to present their best case, moving forward, for winter tours and the World Cup next year. Opportunities like this don’t come around very often when we have our squad at full strength”

Sheffield Wednesday can forget Gregory by signing “lethal” striker

Sheffield Wednesday will now be preparing for another rollercoaster season in the Championship after Danny Rohl's Owls pulled off a miraculous relegation escape to stay put in the second tier.

A six-match unbeaten run to close out the campaign ensured Wednesday didn't fall through the trapdoor, with three wins on the bounce right at the end putting a smile on the face of everyone associated with the South Yorkshire titans.

Still, there will now be a feeling at Hillsborough that Wednesday will want to kick on and not be resigned to another relegation battle next season, with the potential for a number of positive incomings to walk through the door in the summer.

The rejuvenated Owls could even look to reignite a failed deal from the January transfer window, especially with the recent development that Lee Gregory is now a free agent.

Wednesday looking at failed transfer target again

Casting your mind back to January, it's easy to forget about a major transfer saga that transpired at the bottom end of the Championship table.

Blackburn Rovers and Wednesday tussled over the signature of Orlando City striker Duncan McGuire right until deadline day, with the American centre-forward looking to have sealed a deal to join the Riversiders at the very last moment at the expense of Rohl's men.

But, due to a last-second paperwork issue, a deal never went through and now Wednesday could look to pounce again to further add insult to injury.

The Sheffield Star are reporting that Rohl's men are still keen admirers and could look to clinch a move this time around for their failed transfer target, softening the blow of club legend Gregory leaving in the process.

How McGuire would fit in at Wednesday

Anthony Musaba would, no doubt, love to line up alongside the deadly American centre-forward if a move can finally be done, with the 23-year-old winger enjoying himself with electric displays at the close of the campaign even when games became more pressurised.

Musaba's assists total for Wednesday – which stood at a respectable five from 48 contests this season – would very much rise you imagine if McGuire relocates to South Yorkshire.

McGuire has continued to live up to his "lethal" billing handed out to him by Orlando boss Oscar Pareja in 2023, even with the disappointment of a failed EFL move hovering over him, with six goals from 13 games this year.

With the 23-year-old attacker not far off Gregory's Owls total playing out in America, from half the games, the failed Blackburn signing could come into his own even more by lining up alongside the likes of Musaba in his new location.

In the latter stages of the campaign, Musaba and other attackers at Rohl's disposal were unstoppable at points alongside Troyes loanee Ike Ugbo with the Dutchman assisting Ugbo's opener away at Millwall in mid-February before firing home his own effort.

Sheffield Wednesday forward Anthony Musaba.

The ex-AS Monaco man took over goalscoring duties more frequently when push came to shove in crunch clashes from here on in, scoring against West Bromwich Albion in the penultimate game of the season to heroically play his part in the emphatic 3-0 victory.

If the Owls cannot get Ugbo back permanently, and need another new face up top with Gregory exiting, attempting an ambitious capture of McGuire again could be the way to go.

O Tricolor vem tentado pagar dívidas atrasadas.

Nasir Jamshed pleads guilty to bribery at PSL fixtures

The banned Pakistan batsman will be sentenced in February after pleading guilty at Manchester Crown Court

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Dec-2019Nasir Jamshed, the former Pakistan batsman, will be sentenced in February after pleading guilty to a conspiracy to bribe fellow cricketers in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).Jamshed, 33, was given a ten-year ban by the PCB in August 2018, and is standing trial at Manchester Crown Court following his arrest in February 2017 alongside two UK nationals, Yousef Anwar, 36, and Mohammed Ijaz, 34.On the opening day of the trial, Jamshed chose to change his plea, having originally entered a not-guilty plea at a pre-trial hearing last week, after his two co-defendants admitted offering financial inducements to PSL players with a view to them under-performing during matches in the tournament.Opening the case for the prosecution, Andrew Thomas QC explained how an undercover police officer had infiltrated the spot-fixing network, and secured an initial meeting with Anwar by posing as a member of a corrupt betting syndicate. The investigation identified an attempted fix during the Bangladesh Premier League in 2016 and an actual fix in the PSL fixture between Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi in Dubai on February 9.Jamshed, acting as the go-between for the PSL game, persuaded Sharjeel Khan to play out two made-to-order dot-balls off the first two balls of Islamabad’s second over. Sharjeel was later banned for five years by the PCB.The court heard how Jamshed himself had been the intended fixer during the BPL contests, when he and Sharjeel were both playing for Rangpur Riders. However, the first attempt was called off when Jamshed did not give all the pre-arranged signals – which included the use of certain coloured batting grips. And a second attempt against Barisal Bulls was cancelled after he was dropped for what was the final match of the season. The court also heard how Jamshed’s co-defendant, Anwar, had first met the undercover officer at a hotel in Slough in November 2016, where he said he had been involved in spot-fixing for ten years, and claimed to have six players working for him in the BPL.A second meeting, at a restaurant in Birmingham in January 2017, resulted in Sharjeel and his Islamabad team-mate, Khalid Latif, being lined up for the next fix in the PSL.The prosecutor added that Latif’s bag had been searched upon arrival from the UK to Dubai, and a number of coloured grips were found. He was also banned for five years by the PCB.

Corberan could have West Brom’s next Fellows in “bright” 18y/o starlet

West Bromwich Albion made it three games on the spin without defeat in the Championship by beating Cardiff City 2-0 on Tuesday night, with young homegrown product Tom Fellows starring again.

Fellows would assist the opening goal for the Baggies within the first minute, the breakout 20-year-old star bombing down the wing from the get-go before playing it into the path of new recruit Mikey Johnston to fire home.

Endearing himself to the West Brom faithful with two goals and one assist since making the leap from the youth set-up this campaign, Carlos Corberan will long for more top talents to emerge from the U21s in the same vein as Fellows.

The Spanish boss could well stumble across another exciting winger similar to the Baggies number 31 in one teenage whizz, who could well be knocking on the door for first-team opportunities here and there soon.

Akeel Higgins' numbers at youth level

Predominantly playing down the right wing for the U21s this season – the same position which Fellows now excels from in the senior fold at the Hawthorns – 18-year-old Akeel Higgins is exciting those at West Brom with what he could go on and do for the first team down the line.

Scoring one goal and picking up a solitary assist this campaign from 12 appearances in the Premier League 2, Higgins' overall total for the Baggies at U21 level stands at ten goals and three assists from three seasons.

This impressive form in the youth side resulted in Higgins being given a 45-minute run-out for West Brom in the FA Cup versus Aldershot Town, playing up top in place of Daryl Dike on a proud day for the teenage starlet.

Described as being a "bright" attacker by U21s head coach Richard Beale when first breaking onto the scene with the U18s – which saw Higgins net three goals in just eight games during the 2022-23 season – the next obstacle for the right winger to overcome will be cutting his teeth in the first-team fold.

Higgins will look towards Fellows and how effortless he has made that transition look this campaign as a comfort, aiming to follow in the 20-year-old's footsteps when the right time comes.

Fellows' youth record

Fellows was also a wide-eyed teenager attempting to make it at the Hawthorns not too long ago, despite now being a regular first-teamer under Corberan.

The West Brom number 31 boasts similar numbers to that of Higgins when you compare the two at youth level, Fellows bagging just one more goal than the 18-year-old has next to his name currently during his final full campaign at Premier League 2 level.

Higgins will hope the similarities continue when he attempts to make the tricky jump up to the senior side in the near future, aiming to seamlessly fit in amongst the likes of Alex Mowatt and Darnell Furlong like Fellows has pulled off smoothly.

Tom Fellows for West Brom against Arsenal.

Onto 18 appearances this season now, Fellows will just keep plugging along and impressing Corberan to ensure he remains in the Spaniard's starting eleven plans.

Higgins will have major aspirations in his mind of being the next young star to make the grade at the Hawthorns, but he will know that he needs to remain patient as the Baggies focus on winning promotion up to the Premier League with the stars already present in the senior side.

Winning back the Ashes in Australia top priority for new England head coach Chris Silverwood

Test team comes into focus as new chief mentor faces media for the first time since his promotion

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Oct-2019Winning back the Ashes in Australia is top of Chris Silverwood’s to-do list in his role as England’s new head coach.Speaking to the media for the first time since the ECB announced his elevation from the position of bowling coach to head coach across all formats on Monday, Silverwood said his priority was to work with Test captain Joe Root in driving the success of his team, which is ranked No. 4 in the world and saw Australia retain the Ashes in England for the first time in 18 years after a drawn series last month.”Job No. 1 would be helping Joe, putting a lot of support around Joe, making sure that the Test team starts moving forward and we keep moving forward, but in two years’ time when we go back to Australia, we can make a real impact out there,” Silverwood said.”The relationships certainly between myself and the two captains is key but equally I’ve got strong relationships now with all the players and all the backroom staff. I understand how the system works and how the team works as well, so I think the continuity from me as a person to the players is key.”Silverwood, who emerged as the frontrunner for the job last week after Alec Stewart pulled out of the recruitment process and Gary Kirsten was also interviewed, said he was comfortable with the increased responsibility of his new role, not least of which will be addressing concerns over England’s unsettled Test batting line-up.”The step up, obviously there’s going to be a lot more responsibility, obviously I’ve got to deal with you guys [the media] a lot more, which is fine, that is something I will feel my way into, but from a relationship point of view, not a lot will change,” he said. “I will have to step back a little bit, but equally, I want them [players] to know I am available and accessible to them as well.”I’ve already got some very good coaches around me, which is key for me as well, and some good people out there to give advice, but equally we’ll be looking to put the right people in the right places in that batting line-up and push the Test team forward.”Managing Director of England’s Men’s Cricket Ashley Giles said Silverwood would have a strong support network, including batting coach Graham Thorpe and Paul Collingwood, who has worked with the team as a contractor over the past year and is poised to be added to the coaching staff full-time. Giles also remained steadfast in his belief that there should be one coach across all three formats.”I think one man should lead,” Giles said. “The important thing around that one man is having the diversity in thought in the individuals who support him. So he’ll have a good group of coaches working under him. We are crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s on, hopefully, Paul Collingwood joining us full-time and Graham Thorpe is obviously there, has been there for some time.”Those two guys will offer Chris a huge amount of support and knowledge and knowledge of different experiences. The bowling coach position is obviously now vacant. I would like Chris to have a massive say in who that person is.”The 44-year-old Silverwood became England’s full-time fast bowling coach at the end of 2017. After his retirement from playing, Silverwood joined the coaching staff at Essex in 2010. He was appointed head coach ahead of the 2016 season, leading them to promotion that year and then on to the Championship title in 2017. Essex won this year’s Championship – T20 double with Anthony McGrath as head coach. On announcing the appointment, the ECB cited Silverwood’s intimate knowledge of the current England set-up along with his strong relationships within the county system, forged largely during his time at Essex, and Giles emphasised those credentials.”He’s a winner,” Giles said. “He could only prove that where he’s been able to prove it and that’s in the domestic game but the job he did at Essex was fantastic and we’re still seeing the legacy of that now. The sign of a good coach or a good manager is leaving a team in a better state than you found it and that team is still moving on without him at the helm.”No disrespect to Anthony McGrath or anyone else at the club right now but that’s his work still in action. His relationships and his knowledge of what we’re doing is really important but I think next to me here we have an exceptional bloke who cares deeply about what we’re doing and is a very good coach.”You can only be tested within the environments you’ve worked and he couldn’t have worked in a more pressurised environment, whether he was head coach or assistant coach, this summer, as a World Cup and an Ashes summer, and he’s proven he can deal with that.”Giles also saw Silverwood’s domestic links as crucial to strengthening ties between the local game and national teams.”Chris’s main role, he has to focus on what’s going on at the top, getting us to that place where we’re the most respected team in the world, we’re successful, we win in Australia,” Giles said. “But in all the other departments I’m very keen that we’re much more joined up with our development systems, because to compete across three formats over a period we’re going to need a bigger pool of players.”Through his experinces and his relationships he’ll have an eye on that and at the same time, that then needs to be joined up with the county system. There should be a flow there. At times I think that we’ve worked as a bit of an island and, not laying blame anywhere, but an overseas coach doesn’t always help that because they don’t always have the same knowledge or experiences of our system.”Silverwood’s first competitive series at the helm will be England’s tour of New Zealand, which includes a five-match T20 series starting on November 1 in Christchurch and two Tests against the Black Caps from November 21.

Rangers star who won 100% ground duels was the real hero over Tavernier

Glasgow Rangers moved to the top of the Scottish Premiership table by two points on Sunday as they secured a 3-0 win away from Ibrox at St. Johnstone.

A first-half strike from Mohammed Diomande gave his side the lead going into the break and captain James Tavernier made sure of the three points with two well-taken penalties in the last 15 minutes.

Philippe Clement's side have now won nine matches in succession in all competitions and continue on their charge to secure the league title ahead of Celtic.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

Tavernier may grab the headlines with his two late goals to put the game to bed against St. Johnstone but the manager's real hero of the match was central midfielder Diomande.

James Tavernier's penalty prowess

The Gers skipper kept his cool from the penalty spot to dispatch both of his chances to find the back of the net from 12 yards to ensure that the hosts did not have room to get back into the clash late on.

His second goal was particularly impressive as the superb right-back lifted his spot-kick into the top left corner past the despairing dive of Dimitar Mitov, who had guessed the right way but got nowhere near the ball.

However, Tavernier's performance was not a perfect one as there was room to improve in his work both in and out of possession during the game.

The former Newcastle United prospect lost two of his four aerial duels and five of his 11 battles on the ground across the 90 minutes, which shows that he did allow St. Johnstone players to get the better of him at times.

The 32-year-old defender also had 90 touches of the ball at right-back but was only able to create one chance for his teammates at the top end of the pitch.

Mohammed Diomande's impressive display

Diomande, meanwhile, produced an impressive performance with his play in and out of possession in the middle of the park, which is why he was the real hero of the game over his captain.

The recent signing scored his first goal for the club in spectacular fashion to open the scoring and set the Light Blues on their way to the three points.

He picked the ball up on the edge of the box and rifled a fantastic, swerving effort, into the corner of the net on his weaker right foot from distance.

Mohammed Diomande

His goal was not the only impressive part of his performance, though, as the central midfielder also put plenty of work off the ball to help his team out.

Diomande won 100% (6/6) of his ground duels to make four tackles and two clearances to help his side out of possession, which shows that he dominated the opposition on the deck, whereas Tavernier struggled at times in that respect.

The Ivorian dynamo also created two chances for his teammates with 57 touches of the ball, which means that the young ace provided a greater creative threat for Rangers than the skipper despite having 33 fewer touches.

Therefore, Diomande was the real hero of the game as his goal broke the deadlock and set the Gers on their way to the win, and he did more in and out of possession than Tavernier to help the side.

4 changes but no Reyna in predicted Nott’m Forest lineup v Bournemouth

Now that Deadline Day is over, Nuno Espirito Santo will be pleased with how his side has backed him in the transfer market.

The Nottingham Forest faithful will be looking forward to watching their new signings this afternoon as they take on AFC Bournemouth on the road.

There will be multiple changes from the Tricky Trees' 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in the week, with outgoings and incomings altering the XI.

Therefore, let's take a look at who could feature from the off and those who could just miss out, with four potential tweaks from the defeat to the Gunners…

1 GK – Matz Sels

Matz Sels

The first new face in the Forest XI is the "magnificent" Matz Sels, as dubbed by journalist Cyril Olives-Berthet.

Strasbourg's number one joined the club on Thursday for around £5m, and he should come straight into the side for Matt Turner – if the 31-year-old can obtain a work permit.

2 RB – Gonzalo Montiel

The World Cup winner has earned the right-back role under Nuno Santo, and he will start again later today.

In just five starts, Montiel has picked up two assists, with the latest coming against the Gunners.

3 CB – Andrew Omobamidele

Norwich defender Andrew Omobamidele.

Andrew Omobamidele has only just worked his way into the side, but he is set to continue as the right centre-back.

The only potential replacement could be Felipe, but he isn't yet match-fit.

4 CB – Murillo

Murillo

The only constant in the backline this season has been Murillo, with the Brazilian starting all of Forest's last 16 Premier League games.

He will once again start at the heart of the defence.

5 LB – Harry Toffolo

Harry Toffolo

The left-back role has been heavily rotated this season, but Harry Toffolo should keep his spot this weekend after an impressive showing against Arsenal.

The 28-year-old made five clearences, won 80% of his ground duels and completed three key passes.

6 DM – Ryan Yates

The Forest captain has been in and out of the team this season, but with the exit of Orel Mangala, the Englishman should slot straight back in.

His work rate and leadership will be vital on Sunday.

7 DM – Danilo

22-year-old Danilo will keep his spot in the team this weekend.

The Brazilian has also been effective in the final third recently, scoring twice in his last four, and he could offer another option in attack.

8 RW – Nicolas Dominguez

Nicolas Dominguez is a midfielder by trade, but he has been forced into a slightly more attacking role recently.

The Argentine has excelled, and his energy will give him the nod over new signing Giovanni Reyna this weekend.

9 AM – Morgan Gibbs-White

Nottingham Forest player Morgan Gibbs-White

Forest's maestro Morgan Gibbs-White is one of the first names on the teamsheet, and he is guaranteed to play this weekend.

The 24-year-old has contributed to five goals this campaign, and Nuno Santo will hope he can be deadly in attack.

10 LW – Anthony Elanga

Anthony Elanga.

Forest's top creator with six assists should return to the starting XI this weekend, with Neco Williams making way for the former Man United winger.

The 21-year-old has also scored four goals, and the Tricky Trees look much more frightening with him in the side.
