Arsenal set to hold talks over deal for £84m striker with Arteta "keen" to get it done

Arsenal are now set to hold talks over a deal to sign a £84m striker, with Mikel Arteta keen to secure his signature, according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg.

Arteta's striker pursuit rumbles on

There has been a new twist in the Gunners’ pursuit of a striker, with it being revealed that Viktor Gyokeres plans to snub Manchester United if the Gunners come calling, although the Sweden international isn’t thought to be Arteta’s top target.

Indeed, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now revealed the deal for Gyokeres is “not advancing”, with the north Londoners “focussing” on bringing Benjamin Sesko to the Emirates Stadium this summer, having identified the Slovenian as a prime target months ago.

Unlike Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester City, Arteta’s side don’t need to rush to bring a new striker through the door, as they are not competing in the upcoming Club World Cup, but they are now stepping up their pursuit.

That is according to an update from Plettenberg on X, with the reporter revealing that the next round of talks over a deal for Sesko is now “scheduled”, and the feeling around a possible deal is “very positive”.

Arteta is personally “keen” on signing the 22-year-old, who Plettenberg describes as a “top striker”, but a deal will not be cheap, with RB Leipzig expected to hold out for a fee of around €80m – €100m (£67m – £84m).

The Bundesliga club are now waiting for an official offer for the centre-forward, with no full agreement in place at this stage.

"Monster" Sesko could be ideal striker signing for Arsenal

It is important that Arteta is happy with the striker Andrea Berta brings in this summer, given that he must be suitable for the Spaniard’s system, with it previously being revealed they are in disagreement over whether to sign the RB Leipzig forward or Gyokeres.

At this point, the Slovenia international seems to be the more likely signing, which could be good news for the Gunners, considering he has proven himself in a stronger league than the Sporting star, while he is also five years his junior.

Sesko has maintained a solid goal record over the past two seasons in Germany, showing real signs of development since arriving from RB Salzburg, and he could be the final piece of the jigsaw for Arsenal in attack, much like Erling Haaland was for Manchester City.

Would cost £0: Spurs now keen on £100k-a-week star who's scored 57 PL goals

Tottenham Hotspur are now keen on signing a £100k-a-week striker who’s scored 57 Premier League goals, having identified him as their ideal target, according to a report.

Spurs set to pursue new striker this summer

Dominic Solanke returned to the scoresheet on Sunday afternoon, with the Englishman ending his seven-game drought in the Premier League, but Liverpool ultimately came out on top in a dominant performance at Anfield, securing the title with a 5-1 victory.

While Solanke may have found the back of the net against Liverpool, he hasn’t exactly been prolific in the Premier League this season, netting eight goals, and it is now looking increasingly likely that Spurs will attempt to bring in a new striker this summer.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are in a good position to win the race for Feyenoord striker Zepiqueno Redmond, while they are also looking to sign Bayern Munich loanee Mathys Tel on a permanent basis, and they will have the opportunity to do so for a fee of £43m.

According to a report from Spain, however, Tottenham are also keen to sign a striker who has a plethora of Premier League experience, having identified Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the ideal option to bolster their frontline.

Spurs are closely monitoring Calvert-Lewin’s situation at Goodison Park, with the striker’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, which means he will be available on a free transfer.

The Englishman’s availability without a transfer fee is attractive to Spurs, who are looking to bolster their attacking options without spending a significant sum of money, and his refusal to sign a new deal up to this point suggests he is likely to be available this summer.

"Outstanding" Calvert-Lewin could be solid rotation option

The Everton marksman has proven himself in the Premier League over a number of years, scoring 57 goals in the competition during his time with the Toffees, while also receiving high praise from The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland, who lauded him as “outstanding”.

As such, the 28-year-old could be a decent rotation option for Spurs, and his availability on a free transfer is an added bonus, but there are doubts over whether the 11-time England international is capable of taking Ange’s attack to the next level.

Injuries have been a real problem for the £100k-a-week striker throughout his career, and they have continued to hold him back this season, missing the last 12 games due to a hamstring issue.

The last time Calvert-Lewin was on the scoresheet was against Tottenham back in January, bagging a goal and an assist in his side’s 3-2 victory, but constant injury problems mean the Sheffield-born forward can’t be relied upon as a consistent source of goals.

Romano: Aston Villa star club are "happy" with could leave for right offer

One of Aston Villa’s standout players could still be on the move this summer, despite both the club and the player reportedly being “happy” with the current situation, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Villa thump Magpies to boost Champions League hopes

Aston Villa kept their Champions League hopes alive in emphatic fashion over the weekend with a dominant 4-1 win over high-flying Newcastle United at Villa Park. Ollie Watkins, Ian Maatsen, and Amadou Onana all found the net for Unai Emery’s side, while Magpies defender Dan Burn added to their tally with an own goal.

Forget Watkins & Rogers: 9/10 star is becoming Aston Villa's best player

Aston Villa secured a vital 4-1 win over Newcastle on Saturday

ByRoss Kilvington Apr 20, 2025

The result moved Villa within just two points of Newcastle. They’re also now just one point behind Manchester City and level with Chelsea, making the race for a top-four finish incredibly tight with only a handful of games remaining.

Next up is a daunting trip to the Etihad Stadium to face City on Tuesday, a fixture that could prove decisive in the push for Champions League qualification. Speaking after the weekend’s win, Emery stressed the importance of maintaining momentum.

“We can’t stop. We are involved in the key moment of the season. Through the Premier League, we are trying to reach our first objective,” he said.

On Watkins – whose goal drew him level with Gabriel Agbonlahor as Villa’s all-time top Premier League scorer – Emery added: “I’m so happy with how he’s performing and progressing under our management. His individual goal is important—for him, for us, for the club, and for our overall development. Hopefully, we can keep helping him to achieve more and more.”

Watkins could leave Villa Park this summer

While Unai Emery is clearly thrilled with Watkins—who has scored 15 Premier League goals this season—his future at Villa Park isn’t entirely secure. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Watkins could still leave the club this summer if the right offer arrives. Writing in his exclusive GIVEMESPORT newsletter, Romano noted that both Villa and the player are happy with the current situation, but didn’t rule out a move.

“They’re happy with Watkins and he’s happy at the club,” Romano wrote. “Then if a proposal comes, never say never – as it was the case in January.”

Watkins was reportedly the subject of a £40 million bid from Arsenal during the winter transfer window, though Villa ultimately chose to reject the offer.

Having already seen Jhon Durán depart for the Saudi Pro League in January, losing Watkins this summer would represent a major blow for Aston Villa – particularly if they’re unable to secure the permanent signing of Marcus Rashford from Manchester United.

That said, Villa have shown a knack in recent seasons for replacing outgoing talent with even stronger additions, so it wouldn’t be wise to bet against them pulling off something similar again if Watkins does move on.

Vivek Razdan on calling India's 2021 Gabba win: 'They weren't words, they were a feeling and an emotion'

The commentator’s iconic five-word summation of the Brisbane Test captured the essence of India’s victory against all odds

Karthik Krishnaswamy13-Dec-2024What’s your favourite commentary moment? Is it a moment of great commentary, or is it simply a great moment commentated upon? Sometimes the moment is big enough that the words don’t need to say all that much. Ravi Shastri and Ian Smith weren’t telling you anything you didn’t know when they told you that Dhoni had finished it off in style, and that England had won by the barest of margins, but the weight of the moments they described transfigured their words, turning them iconic. You probably didn’t just read them now; you heard them, in those voices. You could argue that the voices count for more than the words themselves, and that, in a job where you’re merely the garnish to what viewers can see for themselves, there’s nothing quite as valuable as the ability to convey emotion. It’s why the stints of Shastri and Smith always seem to coincide with the big finishes.Sometimes, though, a commentator goes above and beyond, and unearths a line that plays with the possibilities of language while capturing a moment’s zeitgeist. Vivek Razdan did this on January 19, 2021, when Rishabh Pant drove Josh Hazlewood down the ground at the Gabba and completed one of Test cricket’s greatest turnarounds.Related

  • The Gabba result has done justice to the game we love

If you were watching the Hindi feed, this is what you heard when the ball rolled into the boundary cushion at long-off: Gabba Seldom have five words said so much.No one had beaten Australia at the Gabba in 31 Tests over 32 years. In the closing stages of the previous Test match, in Sydney, Australia captain Tim Paine had shown his frustration at his team’s inability to turn 1-1 into 2-1 by reminding India’s match-saving sixth-wicket pair that they had to come to this fortress next. “See you at the Gabba, mate.”Poetry in emotion: Razdan’s years of study paid off with the perfect denouement is a weighty, richly textured Urdu-Hindi word whose meaning lies somewhere between – and somewhere outside, too – arrogance, conceit, condescension, disdain, pride and vanity. With that one bit of alliteration, Razdan took in both the gravitas of Australia’s Gabba record and the hubris of Paine’s taunt: the Gabba’s now lay shattered.Razdan says the words came to him spontaneously, in the release of all the emotion built up over the preceding weeks: 36 all out in Adelaide followed by the departure of India’s captain; the comeback in Melbourne; the draw in Sydney sealed by a pair battling a torn hamstring and a bad back; the decimation of India’s bowling attack by injury, and the improbable competitiveness of the ragtag unit that took the field in Brisbane.”Each and every day, each and every game, there were so many different people who were coming up and raising their hand and showing that sort of character, and what they were made of,” Razdan says. “So these emotions were building over time, over all those days and Test matches. By the time we got to the fifth day of that final Test match, needing more than 300 runs, with so many things said against that team, the emotions were so high.”The way everything transpired, it was as if we were living on a different planet. And this was a time when the entire world was going through the Covid pandemic, so those emotions were also somewhere inside that. People are suffering, you don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow. In that sort of environment, when somebody comes up like this and does what they did, it was unbelievable.”I am a big believer in destiny and I’m so grateful that I was doing that stint and I was there on the mic on that day, and luckily, with the blessing of the almighty, those particular words came to me. They weren’t words, they were a feeling and an emotion.”An unheralded Pant became the hero of India’s unlikely win•Patrick Hamilton/AFP/Getty ImagesMoments later, Razdan let himself go once more as the producers cut to shots of India’s players embracing the hero of their run chase. It’s hard to imagine, now, that Pant started the series out of India’s XI, with Wriddhiman Saha preferred in Adelaide. It’s even more unimaginable that it was a reasonable choice then, given the challenge of the pink ball under lights and how far ahead Saha was of Pant as a pure keeper. Pant faced severe scrutiny over his keeping once he came into the side, and for all the runs he scored, his methods came in for widespread criticism whenever he was dismissed, even when he made 97 in Sydney. As Pant soaked in the winning feeling, Razdan ventriloquised: “There are virtues within me, shortcomings too. Ask yourself, seeker, what is it you want from me?”Lines like this speak of the decades of work Razdan put in to carve a niche for himself in a career he fell into, in some ways. He speaks English with an easy fluency that betrays his education at Delhi’s St Columba’s School, which includes Rahul Gandhi and Shahrukh Khan among its alumni. Hindi commentary wasn’t necessarily the obvious career path after Razdan’s fast-bowling days were done.”I’m a Kashmiri Pandit, and Hindi is my mother tongue,” Razdan says. “And my mom comes from UP, she comes from Lucknow. As a child, there were certain lines she always used to throw at me, you know? ” – you are telling someone to do certain things in a certain way, and you yourself are not able to do it. So my mom used to throw these lines at me, and I was always fascinated.”When I grew up, I never knew I’ll get into this line [of work], so once I started commentary, and then Hindi commentary came in in a big way, I started trying to speak to my mom – ‘Tell me all these lines that you heard as a child growing up in Lucknow.’ And it got me more interested in it.Into the breach: after India’s 2021 triumph, West Indies tore down Fortress Gabba earlier this year•Chris Hyde/Cricket Australia/Getty Images”Then I started reading, reading a lot. The poets of repute during that time, Mirza Ghalib, [Allama] Iqbal, all of them. The other thing that excited me was, these are certain lines or certain phrases being used over the years for portraying different emotions. How can I relate it to my sport? That is where the challenge came. So then I had to really go deep, study it, make my own adjustments, make my own lines, make my own rhymes. And over a period of time I kept writing them, kept writing them.”And that day, you know, the situation was such that it just brought out the best, because once you start studying it, you start saying these lines, you keep remembering them. Then you know when is the apt moment to use which line.”Razdan’s most famous line has gone on to transcend its moment in unimaginable ways. It has even been voiced by Shamar Joseph, that other recent stormer of Australia’s citadel. The line also portended a downgrade in the status of Brisbane, which was for so long the intimidating first port of call for visiting teams; it is now no longer Australia’s preferred venue for the start of their home season. As another Gabba Test begins, then, one thing is certain. Whether Australia win or lose, the is gone.

How Arshdeep gatecrashed Suryakumar and Mumbai's party

Suryakumar seemed to have the chase in control for the longest time until Arshdeep entered and changed the game at the death

Sruthi Ravindranath23-Apr-20231:15

Moody: Arshdeep a threat in the powerplay and at the death

Nature is healing. Piyush Chawla is rolling back the years. Suryakumar Yadav is back doing Suryakumar Yadav things. And Arshdeep Singh is back to taking wickets in a bunch – hasn’t been too long since he did that – in addition to defending totals in crunch situations, one game after another. For Suryakumar, though, it has been a long wait. He has endured a rough few months, often not striking the ball as he used to. The guy who pulled a Jofra Archer bouncer for a six on his first ball in international cricket was instead collecting unwanted records – like bagging three consecutive golden ducks in ODIs – during this time. The guy who has been owning the T20 format ever since he made his international debut in 2021 was struggling to even get going. Since 2022, he has had the most runs (1893) and the best strike rate (171.77) in T20s (minimum 20 innings). But it has been a quiet few months for Suryakumar.Related

Against Chennai Super Kings this season, he nicked one behind while attempting to sweep. Against Delhi Capitals, he helped a short ball to fine leg and fell for a first-ball duck. On any other day, these shots would have produced results in his favour. In the first match of this season against Royal Challengers Bangalore, he played a uncharacteristic innings, scoring a 15-ball 16. It had been a gloomy start in the IPL for him, barring a 25-ball 43 against Kolkata Knight Riders. On Saturday, Mumbai were coming up against Kings’ big total of 214. At the halfway mark, the hosts seemed to be nowhere close to the required run rate. But only two teams have successfully chased down 200-plus targets this season, and on both occasions, the winning team needed about 120 in the last ten overs. A blinder is what Mumbai desperately needed. And it was still doable on the Wankhede surface where dew usually favours the chasing team.Suryakumar walked into the field with Mumbai needing 131 off 63 balls. He swept Rahul Chahar behind square for a four on the third ball he faced. The fun started in the next over when three of Liam Livingstone’s deliveries were swept fine for consecutive boundaries. Until then, the Mumbai crowd had reserved their cheers for Sachin Tendulkar, who turns 50 on Sunday and was interviewed by Ravi Shastri on the sidelines for the broadcaster. Now the whole stadium broke into a “Surya, Surya” chant.Suryakumar Yadav put on a show with his usual mix of innovative shots•BCCIIt was all Suryaesque from then on. Flick-pulling a slower short ball to the shorter boundary at fine leg. Getting on one knee to cut away a Nathan Ellis’ back-of-a-length ball over short third. Falling over while playing the paddle to bring up his fastest IPL fifty – off 23 balls. Showing off his superb wrist work by whipping Sam Curran over fine leg to bring the equation down to 40 off 18. Doing all of it with an air of nonchalance – all in all, it was a classic SKY innings.”Form is a funny thing,” Mumbai head coach Mark Boucher said after the match. “It’s always nice for Surya to get some runs, especially the way that he does, it looks pretty spectacular. Sometimes you judge it by the numbers. He’s been hitting the ball really well in the nets. It was just a matter of time before he translated that into runs. So grateful for having him in some good form, hitting the ball so sweet and playing so devastating just like he did tonight. It bodes well for the future for us going forward.”It was all hunky dory till then in the chase, with Cameron Green also doing his bit with a 43-ball 67. The game was almost in Mumbai’s hands.Enter Arshdeep, the man who’s been tasked with bowling the tough overs for Punjab Kings and India in the shortest format. Around this time last year, Arsheep, who is being touted as the “next big thing” in Indian cricket, bowled a tight 19th over to MS Dhoni and helped Kings defend 188. Since the IPL 2022, he’s risen through the ranks and has done some phenomenal stuff (like this) at the highest level.Arshdeep Singh finished with four wickets to his name•Associated PressEarlier in the chase, he had dismissed Ishan Kishan for 1 for his 50th IPL wicket. In the 18th over, Tim David had just dispatched his low full toss for a six off the first ball of the over. Arshdeep nailed the yorker next ball and landed another low full toss off which David took a single to give Suryakumar the strike. The boisterous home crowd got behind Suryakumar once more. He bowled a low full toss again, but this time, Suryakumar’s flick resulted in a superb catch in the midwicket region by Atharva Taide. Mumbai’s hopes were still not dashed, with David and Tilak Varma in the middle.A 15-run 19th over brought the equation down to 16 needed off six balls. The crowd had quietened a bit at this point, and there was a lot of chatter among Kings players. Just one run came off the first two balls. On the third ball, Varma took a swing at a full ball and missed it, and the ball went on to break the middle stump. The next delivery was again a full ball on middle, this time to Nehal Wadhera, the Impact Player. The new middle stump met the same fate. And that’s how Arshdeep gatecrashed Suryakumar and Mumbai’s party. It was also a game that came alive in the second half of each innings. Kings had slowed down after a decent start, with the run rate hovering around eight until the 15th over. The carnage began in the next over in which Arjun Tendulkar conceded 31 runs, with Curran and Harpreet Singh Bhatia hitting four fours and two sixes. Kings plundered 96 runs off the last five overs; the second-most runs scored in that period in IPL history.

Ben Stokes resolves 'to take a few runs with me' in calculated but short-lived assault

Allrounder hits the ground running in first first-class innings since Pakistan Test six months ago

Andrew Miller06-Feb-2021For a few glorious overs, either side of an acceptable time to be waking up on a weekend in the UK, the 2019 BBC Sports Personality of the Year was just threatening to go loco once again; and give all of those disenfranchised voters of his, a rare chance to see him in full flow once more, back on the same rival terrestrial TV channel where so many of them would have witnessed his heroics in the World Cup final at Lord’s. Alas, it wasn’t to be in the long term, and by approximately 7.20am GMT, Ben Stokes had holed out to a juggling Cheteshwar Pujara at deep midwicket during the first Test against India in Chennai, causing a wave of the sort of early-morning disappointment more usually associated with the realisation that you’ve forgotten to buy any milk. While it lasted, however, Stokes’ 82 from 118 balls was invaluable and calculated – a formidable display of mind over matter from a cricketer, lest we forget, who had not played a first-class innings in exactly six months since been granted compassionate leave during the Pakistan series in August, and whose absence from the Sri Lanka tour meant that he had been permitted just five days of post-quarantine acclimatisation for Chennai’s heat and humidity.”I bowled, batted and did a lot of running,” Stokes said of his unconventional preparation back in England. “That was pretty much it. Physically, it was making sure I was ready for the Test match, with workload in my body when it comes to the overs. And to be honest, having been around [for] a while and understanding what was best for my game from a batting point of view, I just made sure that I didn’t overkill too much. If I felt good and felt like everything was going alright, then I’d just come out of the nets.”Related

When compared to the exhaustive sang froid of Joe Root at the other end, there’d be a temptation to wonder why Stokes felt the need to get so rowdy so soon, particularly in light of Root’s bold assertion at the close of the first day, that England needed “600-700″ to be competitive in this first innings. Sure enough, they did manage to bat into the third day of a first innings for the first time since Graham Thorpe made a century containing a solitary boundary in Lahore in 2000-01, but they still seem destined to end up on the marginally shallower side of that ambition. And yet, there is a proven method in Stokes’ madness these days – not least against spin, for which his aggression has its foundations in a defence every bit as rock-solid as Root’s. The confidence of his stride to the pitch of the ball may contrast with Root’s predominantly back-foot approach, but there are few bats in world cricket that look broader at the point of impact than his.Ben Stokes took on the sweep shot when the ball started misbehaving out of the rough•BCCIBut unlike Root, whose game is built around release shots – predominantly on the sweep – Stokes’ defence has a violent element of attack factored into it. That’s not to say it’s infallible, and for the first hour today – one pick-up for six aside – he was kept broadly in check by his most familiar Test nemesis R Ashwin, who has dismissed him seven times in nine previous encounters, more than any other bowler. He had two other key moments again today, a flick off the glove that landed safe on the off side, and a fierce return catch as he drilled hard back through the line. However, Stokes’ confidence in his base does mitigate those moments when he decides to put the hammer down – such as in a thrilling second hour, when the left-armer Shabhaz Nadeem dragged his line wider outside off, and started spitting some vicious lifters out of the crumbling footholes. It was the earliest evidence of Root’s assertion that this pitch would break up over time, but it also meant that for the left-hander, conventional entrenchment was suddenly fraught with danger.Stokes’ response seemed skittish at first, but it was replete with game-craft – not least his innate understanding with Root at the other end. A brace of boundaries in the morning session was the sum of the captain’s intent, as he focussed on working the singles and letting his team-mate drive the agenda.”Things didn’t really change for me until those couple of balls in an over spat out of the rough at me,” Stokes said. “And so I took a decision that, ‘Right, I’m going to put the pressure back onto him as a bowler with balls that have done that’. I had to decide I’d rather get caught at deep square in the way that I did, as opposed to going back into my shell and being a bit defensive and spooning one up to short leg. I thought I might try and take a few runs with me before not the inevitable happened, but before I got out.”And Stokes did so with burgeoning confidence. Out came his sweeps – a very different beast to the surgical instrument that has carried Root to 644 runs in three Tests this year. A flog clean out of the rough against Nadeem, high over deep midwicket; a rifled reverse sweep for four one over later and another next ball to rush through to his half-century.Ben Stokes’ 82 from 118 balls was invaluable and calculated – a formidable display of mind over matter•BCCIWashington Sundar was treated with little more respect when he entered the fray, as Stokes rattled along to 63 not out at lunch, more than two-thirds of England’s runs in a wicketless morning session. He might have been tempted to wind it back thereafter, but with Root at that stage looking as entrenched as any England cricketer in history – and no doubt grateful for someone else to borrow the limelight after more than 1500 minutes of batting this year already – the opportunity to drill home the advantage was too good to turn down.Such are the reasons why Stokes is revered by his peers as the ultimate team man. He will play any given situation with the requisite tenacity, whether that means clinging on for dear life for sessions at a time, flogging quick runs in pursuit of a declaration or something in between, as was the case today – a calculated upping of the pressure from a position of obvious dominance. And by the end of his first red-ball innings since the opening Test against Pakistan in August, Stokes’ first thoughts were not for any missed milestones, but for the net effect his efforts had had on England’s victory hopes.”I’m obviously happy after a couple months away, it’s always nice coming back in and spending some time in the middle,” he said. “But the most pleasing thing that we’ve started the tour off really well and I don’t think we could really have asked for anything better. Win the toss, bat first and we’re still batting on day three, so we’re really pleased.”

The summer signing landed awkwardly on his ankle after an aerial duel against Brentford and couldn’t continue past halftime, requiring further assessment this week.

Arteta admitted Mosquera’s ankle issue represents the most complex problem facing his medical staff, describing it as “more complicated” than the other defensive doubts ahead of Saturday’s encounter.

Leandro Trossard also remains doubtful after missing midweek with an unspecified muscular complaint.

Arteta apparently wants to sign him in January.

Like Saliba, the Belgian winger should return within days according to Arteta’s latest briefing, though his participation against Villa hangs in the balance until today’s final training session provides clearer answers.

Kai Havertz will miss out completely as he continues his recovery from a knee problem, with no return anticipated for weeks.

The German’s absence could force Arsenal to continue relying on Mikel Merino in an unfamiliar striking role, as Viktor Gyokeres steadily works his way back to full fitness after his own recent injury.

Merino has surprisingly flourished with 21 goals this calendar year for club and country, becoming Arsenal’s unlikely top scorer in the process.

Mikel Arteta shares Declan Rice injury twist out of Arsenal

The greatest concern, however, surrounds Rice after he limped off late against Brentford with a calf problem.

Interestingly, the midfielder confirmed to Sky Sports that he was fine and ready to go against Villa, as pointed out by Fabrizio Romano.

However, there has now been a twist to the tale.

When asked about the £240,000-per-week star’s condition, Arteta explained that Rice is in fact a doubt to play against Villa.

Much like Saliba and Trossard, the player will be subject to a late fitness test.

This contradicts what Rice told Sky, with Arteta seemingly taking a cautious approach when it comes to his star midfielder.

The former West Ham captain has become Arsenal’s most indispensable player this season, anchoring their midfield with relentless energy and robustness that nobody else in Arteta’s squad can replicate.

His ability to break up opposition attacks, control possession and cover defensive gaps has proven crucial to Arsenal’s title challenge, making him one of the first names on the team sheet every week.

Not having Rice available for one of their toughest games of the festive period would be an almighty blow, with Arteta hoping he can in fact take part in the Midlands.

As bad as Aasgaard: Rangers must drop Ibrox dud who Rohl "needs more from"

Glasgow Rangers head coach Danny Rohl made it four wins from four in the Scottish Premiership since his move to Ibrox to replace Russell Martin in the dugout with a 2-1 win over Livingston on Saturday.

Goals from Emmanuel Fernandez and Mohamed Diomande scored the goals for the Light Blues at Ibrox to secure all three points for the German manager.

It was a game that was packed with controversial incidents, though, as Livingston’s equaliser and Diomande’s winner were both tight offside calls that were ultimately deemed to be legal.

The most contentious moment of the game came when Fernandez appeared to block a goal-bound shot with his arm, but his arm was in a natural position and VAR opted not to intervene.

That caused the official Livingston account to post on X that the officials did not get “a penalty for a blatant handball to the Lions” in their full-time post after the match.

Rohl, however, will be more concerned with the performances of some of his players, rather than the officials, and Thelo Aasgaard was one of the players who failed to deliver on Saturday.

Why Thelo Aasgaard must be dropped

The Norway international was given the nod to start the match in the number ten position, with Nico Raskin and Diomande behind him in midfield, but he was unable to justify his inclusion in the side with a strong performance.

Instead, the summer signing from Luton Town produced a dismal first-half display that caused Rohl to withdraw him from the match at half-time to bring Bojan Miovski into the game.

Per Sofascore, Aasgaard did not register a single shot on goal and created one chance, which was not a ‘big chance’, in 45 minutes on the pitch before being placed on the bench.

As you can see in the table above, the English-born midfield flop is yet to score a goal or create more than one chance in a game for any permanent Rangers head coach in the Premiership this season.

He has provided one assist in the league under Rohl, against Dundee, but that was a fairly simple pass from the halfway line that Djeidi Gassama turned into a wonderful goal, as shown in the clip below.

These statistics, including his poor display against Livingston, show why Rohl should ruthlessly drop the attacking midfielder from the starting line-up for the Europa League clash with Braga at Ibrox on Thursday night.

Unfortunately, the 23-year-old summer signing has not done enough with his opportunities on the pitch to prove to the former Sheffield Wednesday head coach that he deserves to keep his place in the starting XI moving forward.

Aasgaard was far from the only Rangers player who failed to deliver a good enough performance against Livingston, though, and is not the only flop who should drop out of the side for the upcoming clash with Braga.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Rohl must also ruthlessly ditch right-sided attacker Oliver Antman from the starting line-up for that meeting with the Portuguese outfit after his struggles in a Gers shirt of late.

Why Rangers should drop Oliver Antman against Braga

The German head coach may have hoped that the winger’s international performances for Finland during the international would provide him with confidence and positive momentum for the game against Livingston.

Antman scored, as shown in the clip above, and provided an assist for former Celtic striker Teemu Pukki in a 4-0 win for his country against Andorra on Monday.

Unfortunately, though, the summer signing from Go Ahead Eagles was unable to transfer his form for Finland over to his time on the pitch with Rangers on Saturday, as he failed to deliver an impressive display.

As you can see in the table above, Antman was just as bad as Aasgaard against Livingston. They both failed to register a shot on goal and only created one chance for the team, without creating any ‘big chances’.

Rangers signed the Finland international to provide creativity on the right flank after he produced an eye-catching return of 17 assists in all competitions at club level during the 2024/25 campaign, to go along with seven goals.

Antman, though, has no goals and one assist in nine Premiership outings for the Scottish giants so far this season, and that assist came in the away clash with Livingston back in September.

Since he provided two assists against Viktoria Plzen in a 3-0 win on his debut for the club, the forward has no goals and one assist in 17 appearances in all competitions for the Gers, per Transfermarkt, and writer Kai Watson noted that Rangers “need more from” him.

Antman has not been able to carry his form for Go Ahead Eagles from last season over to Scottish football, yet, and his performance against Livingston on Saturday was another ineffective outing for the Light Blues.

On top of that, the 24-year-old flop has no goals and no assists in three matches in the league phase of the Europa League this term, which does not suggest that he is likely to have much of a positive impact against Braga on Thursday.
