Paul Jewell heaps praise on Bamford

Following a season of struggles in front of goal for most at Liverpool except for Mohamed Salah, there has been talk of Jurgen Klopp looking to bulk up his front line and former Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell does not believe that you can say Patrick Bamford isn’t good enough.

After an outstanding season with Leeds United, Bamford has seen his name linked with a summer switch to Liverpool but with Marcelo Bielsa expected to remain at Elland Road, Bamford leaving appears unlikely.

The 27-year old finished the Premier League season with 17 goals in 37 starts and that was enough to see him finish as the second-highest English scoring player, only behind golden boot winner Harry Kane.

The former Chelsea striker was doubted by pundits before the start of the season which means that you can’t say he wouldn’t be good enough for Liverpool – that’s according to Jewell who spoke exclusively to The Transfer Tavern:

“Every time people have questioned Bamford he’s answered them this season and the manager has shown great faith in him because I know lots of Leeds fans questioned Bamford before the start of the season.

“He’s been terrific but whether or not he’s good enough to play for Liverpool, who knows? I’m not going to sit here and say that he isn’t good enough for Liverpool, but what I will say is that he’s had a terrific season for Leeds United and hats off to him.”

Despite finishing the season with 17 goals, it is still just the first time that Bamford has proved his worth in the Premier League as he has had several unsuccessful loan spells at Norwich City, Crystal Palace and Burnley.

Klopp may feel like he needs to add some more firepower to his ranks in case someone picks up an injury or hits a bad patch of form, which is exactly what happened this season as Diogo Jota was injured for large spells and Firmino managed nine goals in 48 games.

Bent backs Everton to sign Danny Ings

Marcus Bent believes Everton should sign Danny Ings to provide competition and back-up to Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer.

Calvert-Lewin often ploughed a lone furrow up front for the Toffees in the 2020/21 season.

The England international scored 16 goals in 33 league outings and has subsequently been rewarded with a place in Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad for the European Championships this summer.

But there is not much depth when it comes to out-and-out strikers at the club and Bent believes that a deal to sign Ings would improve the options available to boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Ings was first touted as an option by pundit Chris Sutton, when speaking to Radio 5 Live via the Liverpool Echo, and Bent believes he would be a superb, if expensive, acquisition.

The 28-year-old enjoyed a fine season at Southampton this term, scoring 13 goals in 33 outings in all competitions, and he would undoubtedly lighten the load on Calvert-Lewin next season.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “They definitely need to bring someone in, they’re talking about Ings. He’s 28.

“He’s not going to be a replacement for years, he’s not going to be at the club for years. He’s doing well at the minute.

“But talking to a couple of people at the club, he’d be a good buy, I wouldn’t say a cheap buy, but he’d be someone who would come in and probably play around DCL and he’d get his number of goals too, I think.”

Tottenham line up Brendan Rodgers offer

According to Football Insider, a Tottenham Hotspur source has explained that the club and Daniel Levy will offer to triple Brendan Rodgers’ salary in an attempt to prise him from Leicester City – even despite the northern Irishman publicly distancing himself from the job.

Rodgers, who has guided the Foxes to a highly likely place in the Champions League next season, explained in a press conference that his focus was purely at the King Power Stadium (FourFourTwo).

Tottenham lining up big money Rodgers offer

Regardless, as per this new information from a Tottenham source speaking to FI, Levy is lining up a big money offer to treble Rodgers’ wages in the hope of tempting him away.

This comes nearly a decade after he was allegedly Levy’s ‘preferred choice’ to replace Harry Redknapp but opted for the role at Liverpool instead.

Spurs have not given up hope of landing Rodgers as per this report and are now willing to table a lucrative offer of £15 million-per-year including bonuses.

The source also explains that Levy is looking to ‘offer him the earth’ – and that is bordering on literate given the £15m-per-year wage is even more than previous boss Mourinho, who was on £12.5m-per-year.

Transfer Tavern take

Mourinho is still getting his full base salary whilst on gardening leave according to reports, so we advise to take this one with a pinch of salt.

Amid the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic, news of Levy being willing to offer a Mourinho successor £15m-per-season comes as very surprising – especially considering the club still haven’t found a deal for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium naming rights.

That being said, Rodgers would be a dream appointment for Spurs – with BT Sport pundit Robbie Savage recently dubbing him an ‘elite manager’ (via the Daily Mail).

AVFC: Fans react to Windass’ Alli comments

Aston Villa have been tipped to make a move for Tottenham ace Dele Alli this summer by former Premier League striker Dean Windass.

As to be expected, plenty of Villa supporters have been giving their thoughts on a potential move on social media.

Alli has fallen out of favour under Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho this season, starting just two Premier League games during the current campaign. He’s under contract with Spurs until 2024, but his lack of game-time has led to speculation of a north London exit.

Alli is on £100,000 per week at Tottenham and has seen his market value crash over the last 16 months from £81m to £28.8m.

Villa are expected to bolster their attacking ranks this summer with a new winger and another striker, but Windass believes Alli could be heading to the Midlands. Speakinh exclusively to Football Transfer Tavern, cited by Birmingham Live, he said that either Villa or Everton should make a move for the England international.

“I think Everton or Aston Villa, one of those teams where he then becomes a big fish in a small pond again. At the minute he’s a small fish in a big pond.

“The kid needs to be playing to get back into the England squad. Gareth will be on the phone saying ‘I think you’re a great player, but you need to be playing your club football.’”

Villa fans react

Birmingham Live shared the story on Twitter on Monday and here is what these Villa fans had to say in reply, with many excited by the prospect of Alli lining out in claret and blue if Windass’ recommendation is acted upon.

West Ham dealt Declan Rice injury blow

David Moyes is anxiously awaiting updates on Declan Rice’s fitness after the West Ham United midfielder was ruled out of Monday’s trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That’s according to The Telegraph, who note that Rice sustained a serious knee injury while representing England against Poland during the international break.

Rice’s hopes of featuring at this summer’s European Championships are now in danger, with the current timeframe on a return expected to be four to six weeks.

Rice is claimed to have been wearing a protective brace on his knee to prevent any further damage and will undergo scans to determine the severity once the swelling has subsided.

It is currently unclear if the 22-year-old will need surgery, which would come as a huge blow for Moyes and England manager Gareth Southgate who are awaiting updates.

Rice is said to have sustained the issue around an hour into the Three Lions’ 2-1 win over Poland last Wednesday, but remained on the field to deliver a Man of the Match display.

A worst-case scenario could see Rice miss the remainder of the season and potentially Euro 2020, should he require an operation, while a best-case outcome will still be expected to see him miss clashes with top-four rivals Leicester City, Chelsea and Everton.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/the-latest-west-ham-news-and-views-2″ title=”The latest West Ham news and views!”]

Rice has been in outstanding form all season and has played an instrumental role in the Irons’ challenge for Champions League qualification, having yet missed a second of Premier League football.

The £60k-per-week star will now miss his first top-flight match since May 2019 when the London Stadium natives visit Wolves on Monday night, looking to claim a first victory at Molineux since August 2009.

Moyes will be extremely concerned over how West Ham’s season will end if Rice is to play no further part, and will have to face his own fears over how to live without the midfielder.

The Hammers boss stated back in November that he was fearful of becoming too reliant on Rice, but had stretched the £100m midfielder’s run of Premier League starts to 68 in a row prior to the international break.

“He is such an improved player,” Moyes said, via quotes by the Independent. “I really think he is doing a great job as a player and we are building up hope that he will be an outstanding captain.

“The role, his responsibility he takes on the pitch because of his young age, his leadership qualities will build. He has learned from Harry Kane and Mark Noble. My biggest concern – and I know he is young – would be that I don’t want us to rely too heavily on him.”

Moyes will now have to rely on Noble standing in for Rice over the next month or so with the 33-year-old the only central midfield cover available, which could see the Irons captain start successive Premier League games for only the second time this season.

Noble struggled to keep up with the pace of the opposition during his most recent start, with Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood turning the veteran inside out with a run Peter Crouch would describe as “scandalous”.

Noble will now have to step up and shake off the cobwebs if West Ham are to be without Rice for much of the rest of the season, and ensure his side are no worse off if they are to qualify for Europe.

Gerrard should axe Steven Davis tonight

Rangers take on League One side Cove Rangers at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup on Sunday evening and Steven Gerrard should consider dropping Steven Davis from his side.

The 36-year-old has been a regular for the Light Blues so far this season and has been one of their most consistent performers in the league, averaging a very solid 6.99/10 rating across his 30 league appearances this season.

However, he has failed to contribute a goal or an assist in any of those appearances and against a side such as Cove Rangers, where Gerrard will undoubtedly want his side to have a comfortable margin of victory, he may be best served by opting for a more creative midfield.

Although Davis’ performances this season have rightfully earned him a new contract at the club for next season, his performances in the last month for both club and country haven’t been at his usually high level.

Aside from the 3-0 win against St Mirren in early March, all of Davis’ performances with Rangers last month saw him rated below a 6.5 match rating from WhoScored for his performances.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read this week’s latest Rangers news, transfer rumours and more!”]

He particularly disappointed in the Europa League games against Slavia Prague and was one of several Rangers players guilty of producing one of their worst displays of the season in the 2-0 defeat at Ibrox.

Although the 36-year-old was able to set a record recently for the most caps earned by any UK player in history, Gerrard may not be too pleased that his veteran midfielder played for 90 minutes against both Italy and Bulgaria during the international break.

Before he broke the record, former Northern Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez was full of praise for Davis, saying:

“He’s always been what managers call a nine out of ten. You just know what you are getting as he is so consistent. Even now he is the same. He doesn’t carry any baggage and is the ultimate professional. One of the best around.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

Therefore, you could definitely argue that his performances recently have not been great and the midfielder is perhaps in need of a rest, so even though Gerrard might be keen to select some experience in his midfield against Cove Rangers to ensure his side gets the job done, he should drop Davis for this particular fixture.

And, in other news… Rangers should unleash “clever” £540k-rated beast on Sunday, he could be Gerrard’s game-changer

Predicted Man City team vs Man United

Manchester City will be looking to extend their winning run and take a huge step towards the title by beating Manchester United at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon.

Pep Guardiola’s side have now won 21 games in a row in all competitions after beating Wolves 4-1 in their last fixture and the Citizens are currently 12 points clear of second-placed Leicester City, having played a game less than the Foxes.

Therefore, victory in the derby on Sunday would be another big result for Guardiola’s side in their hopes of securing the title this season, as if their current form continues, it is difficult to see any team catching them.

Here’s how Football FanCast expects Guardiola to line his side up against Manchester United, with three changes from the team that started against Wolves…

Ederson keeps his place in goal and will be looking to pick up another clean sheet, having conceded rare goals against West Ham and Wolves in the last two fixtures.

There’s one change in defence, as John Stones returns to resume his partnership with Ruben Dias at the back, with the pair having been superb so far this season.

Ilkay Gundogan is likely to return in midfield alongside Rodri after being rested for the game against Wolves, which allows Kevin De Bruyne more freedom to go forward.

Phil Foden also comes back into the side having not started either game against West Ham and Wolves, which moves Raheem Sterling up front in place of Gabriel Jesus, who despite his brace against Wolves, was again guilty of missing big chances.

Riyad Mahrez drops to the bench as a result, with Bernardo Silva moving to the right-wing as the Algerian’s replacement, however, the “special” former Leicester man, who earns £120k per week at City, can definitely be relied upon to make a difference from the bench if required.
