Afghanistan can cause upsets – Akram Khan

Akram Khan, the former Bangladesh captain, has said that Afghanistan’s achievement at qualifying for the 2015 World Cup is akin to when his side won the 1997 ICC Trophy to seal a 1999 World Cup berth

Celebrations in Kabul after Afghanistan’s first-ever qualification to the 2015 World Cup evoked memories of the scenes in Dhaka and the rest of Bangladesh when they won the ICC Trophy in 1997 to qualify for the 1999 World Cup.It’s a doorway to international exposure and more, but there are several pitfalls to be avoided, said Akram Khan, who led Bangladesh in the 1997 ICC Trophy triumph, and played a pivotal role in its transition to the biggest stage.”One achievement can create a lot of goals,” Akram told ESPNcricinfo. “After we qualified for the 1999 World Cup, I said that my dream was to beat Pakistan. And we did it. Having seen some of the Afghanistan players in Dhaka this year, I am sure they will upset a few teams. They deserve qualification to the 2015 World Cup.””The world will see you play. It will open doors for you, particularly these days when a lot of domestic competitions are looking for performers.”Akram said that the Bangladesh players were slowly getting prepared for the stage they reached in 1997 and 1999 through years of near-misses at the ICC Trophy, and a strong club cricket structure at home. Domestic cricket should be a priority for Afghanistan, he added, and the passion of the general public will be an added advantage.”If Afghanistan has a domestic structure going, if they get the facilities and the security, you will see their improvement. Seeing their passion after their qualification was confirmed, I think they have something big waiting for them in cricket. They have a physical advantage to some of the other teams at their level.Akram also warned against complacency, particularly in terms of maintaining a regular flow of players.”UAE had the chance to make it big in international cricket when we were also an Associate side, but they didn’t utilize the opportunity. Bangladesh did it quite well but there is a lot left to do in terms of playing standards.”When Kenya had their best side, most of them came from one or two families. It is important to hold on to a steady side. We had Mashrafe, then came Ashraful, Shakib, Tamim, Mushfiqur. Kenya and UAE didn’t have this flow of players.”Another factor that the Afghan players must be wary about is a drop in form. They are going to carry around the tag of “minnows” for as long as cricket fans and the media want, and when minnows do badly, calls for their head become inevitable. Just ask Bangladesh. Both teams are coincidentally in the same group during the 2015 World Cup. They have played twice against each other, both in Twenty20 matches, with Bangladesh winning on both occasions, but the likes of Mohammad Nabi, Mohammad Shahzad, Shapoor Zadran, Hamid Hassan and Gulbadin Naib, who have all played in the Bangladesh Premier League and the 50-over Dhaka Premier League, have given a glimpse of what to expect in the forthcoming tournaments. The Afghanistan Cricket Board has expressed unease about their relationship with the BCB. There is mutual admiration, and help has already begun in the form of recruiting Afghanistan players, and their growing popularity in the country. It could all stoke a fine rivalry, and the context is already being set. Bangladesh’s biggest rival has so far been Zimbabwe, so a new rival closer to home could make things more interesting.

N Srinivasan, who has stepped aside in his capacity as BCCI president until the probe into the alleged corruption in the IPL is complete, has said the demands for his resignation were an “attack” against him. Speaking to a Tamil news channel, Srinivasan reiterated that he had nothing to do with the case against Gurunath Meiyappan.Responding to a query as to whether the controversy engulfing the BCCI was a conspiracy against him, Srinivasan told : “Not a conspiracy, it’s an open attack against me. It is clear that one group may have been trying to get into the BCCI. Hence the attack.”Srinivasan has been under pressure to resign his post since Meiyappan – his son-in-law who is an official of Chennai Super Kings, the IPL franchise owned by India Cements, a company that Srinivasan is managing director of – was arrested a couple of weeks ago for alleged betting in the IPL.Srinivasan pointed out that he was not personally under the police’s scanner. “No charge has been stated against me,” he said.On June 2, following an emergency meeting of the BCCI’s working committee in Chennai, Srinivasan had temporarily handed over the duties of board president to Jagmohan Dalmiya.Dalmiya, a former BCCI president himself, is likely to head the board for four to six weeks, while the committee consisting of two retired Tamil Nadu High Court judges looks into the allegations of corruption against Meiyappan, India Cements and Jaipur IPL Cricket Pvt Ltd, the owner of the other IPL franchise involved in the controversy, Rajasthan Royals.

T&T end record Jamaica streak to reach final

T&T are through to the finals after securing a seven-wicket victory over Jamaica. They will face Barbados in the final on May 9

ESPNcricinfo staff06-May-2013
ScorecardJamaica’s run of 15 straight first-class wins was finally brought to an end•WICBTrinidad & Tobago held on to a three-wicket victory over five-time defending champions Jamaica in their semi final, and will proceed to the final on May 9 where they will play Barbados. It was a huge upset as it ended a run of 15 consecutive wins for Jamaica in the Caribbean first-class domestic competition.Jamaica chose to bat, and were 87 for 6 at one stage as the T&T bowlers bowled incisive spells. Carlton Baugh played the lone hand with an unbeaten 88, with Tamar Lambert scoring a vital 38. Last man Sheldon Cotterrell scored 44 to help boost Jamaica’s innings to 246. Marlon Richards took 5 for 46, while Imran Khan took two wickets.T&T lost opener Jeremy Solozano early through a run out, but Lendl Simmons and Yannick Cariah shared a 64-run partnership to help steady the innings. However T&T’s innings was kept in check by Nikita Miller, who finished the innings with figures of 5 for 41 in 23 overs. Contributions from Simmons (79), Cariah (26) and Akeal Hosein (24) helped push the T&T score to 170 before they were dismissed.Although they began with a lead of 76, Jamaica did not fare any better in their second innings, as Richards and Rayad Emrit struck to pick up three wickets each. Apart from a 39-run partnership between David Bernard and Baugh, who once again top-scored with an unbeaten 38, the team was shot out for 102, leaving T&T 179 runs to chase.Jamaica’s chase looked as good as over with the score at 73 for 6 but Imran Khan and Emrit ensured the team would make it to the target, albeit seven wickets down. Bernard waged a lone war, taking six of the seven T&T wickets, and was not helped by two dropped catches.”It was a fantastic effort. It was a real fight,” T&T manager Omar Khan told the after the match. “Down to the end the guys rally showed a lot of character. In the batting department we continue to struggle, but Imran Khan and young Katwaroo gave us a partnership (of 57) and we really fought.”And then Imran and Rayad Emrit. We knew we had batting to the end, but at the end of the day the guys have to be commended.”

Odisha stun Delhi with big win

A round-up of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches on March 28, 2013

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Mar-2013Group AA career best 4 for 11 from left-arm seamer Suryakant Pradhan helped Odisha clinch a convincing seven-wicket victory over Delhi in Indore. After Delhi chose to bat, Pradhan destroyed their top order; they couldn’t recover from it and were eventually bowled out for 80 in the final over of the innings. No. 9 Pawan Negi was the top scorer with 20. In reply, Odisha lost their first wicket in the first over, but thereafter steadied themselves through patient knocks by Ankit Yadav (26), Arabind Singh (19) and Govind Podder (25), to reach the target in the penultimate over. With the win, Odisha moved above Gujarat to occupy the second-last place in the points table after three games. An unbeaten 16-ball 42 from Raiphi Gomez took Kerala to a narrow one-wicket victory (VJD method) over Vidarbha in a rain-shortened match at the Emerald High School Ground. Kerala, chasing 108 from 13 overs, lost wickets quickly and were in danger of being bowled out cheaply, but Gomez helped his side score 52 off 29 balls, with wickets falling all around him, to get them home in the final over. Besides him and Sanju Samson, no other batsman put up any resistance. Vidarbha’s innings revolved around a solid unbeaten 55 from Amol Ubarhande. He took them to 138 in 19 overs before rain delayed play. Kerala moved to the top spot of the table.Group BA responsible knock of 70 from Mohammad Kaif helped Uttar Pradesh to a 10-run victory over Karnataka in Indore. After UP were put in to bat, Kaif put on valuable partnerships of 51 (37 balls) and 70 (41 balls) with wicketkeeper Gaurav Tomar and Tanmay Shrivastava. Though they lost wickets towards the end of the innings, Kaif’s innings ensured they set their opponents a target of 164. In their chase, Karnataka were pegged back by early wickets – they were reduced to 31 for 3 in the sixth over. Lokesh Rahul (34), Stuart Binny (39) and Karun Nair (29) kept them in the hunt, but wickets fell towards the end and they fell short of their target. The win gave Karnataka third place in Group B, above UP.A solid top-order performance from Punjab, led by Ravi Inder Singh’s knock of 60, helped Punjab clinch a 25-run victory over Bengal in a Group B tie at the Holkar Stadium. The foundation of a strong total was laid by Ravi’s valuable stands of 46 with the captain Mandeep Singh, 39 with Gurkeerat Singh and 39 with Mayank Sidhana. Sidhana and Amitoze Singh accelerated towards the end of the innings to push their run-rate up, and get them to a competitive 168. Bengal lost wickets regularly in their chase, and the lack of a long knock or a partnership, despite a number of starts by batsmen, hurt them. The opener Shreevats Goswami was the top-scorer with 33; Bengal eventually limped to 143 for 8 in their 20 overs. Punjab took the top spot in the group with the win, with Bengal behind them at the second spot.

Paliwal, Yadav push UP to the edge

After two days of excitement on the best surface produced for this season’s Ranji quarter-finals, UP are still not out, but they are not in it by much either

The Report by Abhishek Purohit in Indore07-Jan-2013

The underdog continued to bite chunks out of the big opponent’s reputation on day two in Indore. In the morning, young Rajat Paliwal played probably the innings of his short career to give Services a lead of 129 on a difficult pitch. As Uttar Pradesh resisted in their second innings the way a top side should, fast bowler Suraj Yadav squeezed out four wickets through sheer relentlessness. After two days of excitement on the best surface produced for this season’s Ranji quarter-finals, the best side of the league stage are still not out, but they are not in it by much either.Services had earned a narrow lead by stumps on day one with positive, unhindered batting. They raised the bar on the second morning. Knowing that a batsman was never in on the green, bouncy Holkar Stadium pitch, they attacked at the slightest opportunity. The efforts of Paliwal and Sarabjit Singh, whose partnership doubled the score from 97 for 5, brought 109 runs in just over two hours. The duo was beaten repeatedly outside off stump, especially Sarabjit and their gloves were battered by short balls – Paliwal had a large, bulging blister on his right forefinger – but the boundaries still came. A flail over slips by Sarabjit; a slash over gully and an upper-cut over the third-man boundary by Paliwal.Even as Services raced towards 200, Ankit Rajpoot, in his first over of the day, had Sarabjit edging one low to Mohammad Kaif at first slip on 40. Yadav edged a lifter to the wicketkeeper next ball, and with an injured captain, Soumik Chatterjee, doubtful to bat, there wasn’t much batting left. Which is when Paliwal opened up further. He also began to farm the strike, taking singles towards the end of overs. When Piyush Chawla was introduced, Paliwal drilled his first ball to the deep extra-cover boundary, pulled the legspinner over midwicket for four and in the same over, lofted him for a flat six over extra cover.By now, Paliwal was unstoppable. He played the hook liberally as UP overdid the short stuff, and lofted Rajpoot to the straight boundary to reach his fourth hundred of the season. Chawla, for the umpteenth time in his career reduced to bowling flat and quick, was taken for successive fours even by No 10 Shadab Nazar. What this match meant to Services was evident when Chatterjee limped out after Nazar was bowled by a Rajpoot yorker. The Services captain was caught in front first ball to give Rajpoot his fifth, but there was no doubting Services’ desperation in a rare knockout game for them.UP had to face about three overs before lunch, which was taken during the third when Mukul Dagar was given caught behind pushing forward to Yadav. Kaif, the stand-in UP captain, and Srivastava now battled, just like Sarabjit and Paliwal had. They were beaten repeatedly as well but hung on.As a rather harsh winter sun shone on the ground, Services’ attack, comprising just three fast bowlers and a part-time medium-pacer, started flagging. But Yadav somehow summoned the energy to produce successive wicket-taking deliveries.Kaif, who had survived three lbw appeals in a Nishan Singh over, was caught in front on 33 by one that drew him forward and straightened past the bat. Yadav did it again next ball, a similar delivery zipping past Parvinder Singh’s push to flatten the off stump.UP would have sunk further had Yadav not overstepped while having Srivastava caught behind on 32. Srivastava had been calmly leaving them outside off all this while, and along with the solid Arish Alam, steadied UP again. Yadav had more reserves left still. He dug one in at Srivastava late in the day, the opener was snapped up by the keeper again, and this time, it was a legal delivery.UP had played a spinning allrounder in Chawla and a spinner in Ali Murtaza on a grassy wicket, which meant it was the last batting pair of Alam and Eklavya Dwivedi at the crease now. The pair took UP into the lead, which at effectively 9 for 4 isn’t much of a lead.

Focus on captain Dravid in Royals' opening game

Match facts

Friday, April 6, Jaipur
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Rahul Dravid is without the services of his ace-man Shane Watson for the first half of the season•AFP

Big picture

While the richer teams have grown stronger with big-name buys during the 2012 auction, Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab have been slowly pushed to a second-tier status in the IPL. However, under captains Rahul Dravid and Adam Gilchrist, both teams are capable of punching above their weight.Dravid was an automatic choice for captain after the departure of Shane Warne and he will be intent on making an impression on Kings XI as much as on his own team. His first job will be to shape the team according to his vision, after the leadership of Warne, who was synonymous with brand Royals. Dravid can take cues from his opposite number Gilchrist, who hasn’t been the force he used to be with the bat, but led Deccan Chargers to a title and has extracted performances from little known players, Paul Valthaty for example, after moving to Kings XI.A win in the opening game is important for Royals because their next three matches are against strong teams and any points from this game will provide that initial boost. Kings XI will look to do the same and identify who their superstar this season will be.The match will also have a bowl-off between Sreesanth and Praveen Kumar. Sreesanth, who joined Royals this year, has the opportunity to score points over a jaded Praveen, who appeared ineffective in international matches in Australia and Bangladesh.

Players to watch

With performances belying his 41 years, Brad Hogg was the leading spinner in this year’s Big Bash League, taking 13 wickets. Using his mix of chinaman deliveries and googlies, Hogg could fill the void left by Warne in the Rajasthan attack.Punjab spent $200,000 to buy the services of Azhar Mahmood, the only player who has played for Pakistan* in this IPL. That could prove to be a bargain as Mahmood can be dangerous with bat and ball.

2011 head-to-head

Kings XI won their only match against Royals last year, a 48-run win set up by Shaun Marsh’s 42-ball 71.

Stats and trivia

  • Brad Hodge, who is now part of the Royals, is the second-highest run-getter in Twenty20 cricket, only 44 behind David Hussey’s 4270.
  • Azhar Mahmood is one of four players* to have more than 100 wickets and 2000 runs in the Twenty20 format.
  • Royals and Kings XI have played seven games against each other and the head-to-head record is 4-3 in Royals’ favour.

Quotes

“Warnie’s absence is undoubtedly a big loss. In the first four years he has done a lot for the team. But this time the responsibility is on Rahul Dravid. Having so much experience, even Dravid knows how to handle the situations and we are ready for the challenge. We have players who have performed well in all formats of the game. The seniors like Rahul, Sreesanth and I will also ensure that we play our part right and help the team perform in the tournament.”

“There are bigger hitters than me in the IPL, but I realise that the pressure will definitely be on me since I’ve done well last year, and I’m ready for it. I won’t change the way I play and will approach my batting in the same fashion – strokes and all – and hope to have the same results”
An IPL 2011 success story, Paul Valthaty, will have the weight of expectation this time round. *April 6, 19:30 GMT: The article earlier said that Azhar Mahmood is the only player to take more than 100 wickets and score more than 2000 runs in Twenty20 cricket.*04:44 GMT, April 6: The article had stated that Azhar Mahmood was the only Pakistan-born player in this IPL. This has been corrected.Edited by George Binoy

Central and East to meet in final

In the 39 overs that followed, South ended on 152 for 2, captain S Badrinath making an unbeaten 58.East Zone also advanced to the final of the Duleep Trophy by way of a first-innings lead over North Zone in Delhi.
